Villa: Friedel, Walker, Dunne, Cuellar, Clark, Downing, Young (c), Agbonlahor, Reo-Coker, Makoun, Bent.

I know why, but I still don't see what he's done worse than Pires. Ah well.

Is he injured?

Is Bradley still not 100% yet?

Good that Petrov is dropped, we will have so much more energy in midfield now.

I'm glad Cuellar has been given a chance, Collins probably needs a rest.

Good selection IMO. Reo Coker for me should have been on for Petrov early, he gives us a natural sitter and Makoun can be much more effective further forward due to his ability to pass the ball.
Title: Re: Blackpool v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on February 12, 2011, 02:20:30 PM
I find we do less desperation defending with Cuellar in the middle. Need NRC to shut down Adam.

Good morning all.

Agree with that ozz.  Looks a well balanced team to me.

Good team. NRC and J2o to control the midfield and super attackers to run riot.
At a wedding now till 6 so relying on you lot to keep me in the match!

Gabby on the left wing, Ashley playing in the 'hole'... it doesn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that Downing and Walker play as well down that right-hand side, could be profitable!
Title: Re: Blackpool v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: ozzjim on February 12, 2011, 02:32:50 PM
It doesn't, but Ash looked great in the hole for England, so there is a formula that should work there somewhere!

I know why, but I still don't see what he's done worse than Pires. Ah well.

He's not going to sign Pires for six months and not at least put him on the bench though. He's short-term. Bannan (hopefully) is the future.

We've got a big, competitive squad now with the new signings and the emergence of the youngsters meaning decent players are going to miss out on the matchday squad the whole time. Fonzy isn't involved at all either unfortunately.

Yes with Bent in nets, Walker up front, NRC in central defence and Friedel in midfield.

In fairness Bannan and the Fonz would both benefit from 6 months loan in the championship again.

If we can deploy Makoun and NRC to close down his space then not so... The only issue is that we'd probably need a third centre mid in there to do that efficiently.

Didn't  know whether you were taking the pish or not but I could have sworn Collins was playing and Clarke wasn't when I read the team originally. Strange for Collins to lose out, maybe still recovering from trying to hold Wales' defence together against EIRE during the week.

Not for me, they're better training and working under Houllier's methods. He's been rotating his midfield every game lately, they'll all get an opportunity.

It's the defence, stupid!

Happy as I am with the signings of Bent, Makoun and Bradley, it was our defence that got us into this mess in the first place and that wasn't really rectified in Jan.

We always look like we have a goal in us (as we did earlier in the season) but we always look like we could concede twice as many.

there we have a perfect example of why we are struggling defensively. First Clark gets caught by Marlon. Collins does well, and via Jean II ends up with Dunne. Dunne fucks around with it and he ends up just blasting the ball back to them. We really do cause our own issues most of the time.

great effort from Downing. Just wide

Oh, but no, he's rubbish, he doesn't go into tackles like Mark Dennis on speed.

He's our best player by a mile today.

He could score three and there will be those battering him for not being Shaun Teale.

Maybe expectations are too high. I'd just be happy if he could cross a ball.

We should have scored so many, I wish some chances would fall to Bent.

Whilst Downing is playing so piss poorly Bent will not get the service.  How someone thought Downing was our best player in the 1st half I'll never know, Gabby has been.  SD has been dreadful. (And I am a big Downing fan!)

Gabby a left winger... do me a favour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he isn't playing on the left wing though. He's playing left of centre.

He has just run all thye way down the left wing and because he has not got a left foot, he has had to stop and check inside to lose the ball and then to compound it gives away a stupid free-kick. Oh by the way what the heck is 'left of centre'?

GH isn't playing with conventional two wingers up front. Both Ash and Gabby are playing either side and just behind Bent. Bent is essentially playing up front on his own and drops as deep as the half way line. Gabby and Ash are dropping much deeper to pick up the ball and supporting in attack.

Blackpool are horrific at the back. How Downing fucked up the assist for that chance was unbelievable. Crazy how open they were though it was 4 on 1. Think Gabby is playing well as is Downing but anyone who plays wide today will have a field day. Clark started rerribly but the defence has steadied since the introduction of Collins. Makoun is having a bit of a mare I think.

These guys are worse than Fulham last week and they were dreadful.

Ashley Young has played like a prat in the first half also.

Like that substitution. Bent hasn't had the best of games. Service hasn't been great. Heskey might just hold the ball up and retain it that bit more to create something. Brave choice from Ged cause if we don't win he will be lambasted by people saying he should have stayed on.

Villa red card: A bit harsh this. Yes, Jean Makoun is late with his tackle on DJ Campbell but he didn't get that much of the man. Referee Howard Webb decides it is a straight red card, however, and Villa are down to 10 men.

I'll take a point now. This is terrible

I'd have taken a point 20 minutes ago, let alone now.

We created more than enough chances to win this game in the first half. I know GH is going to get slated if we lose, but you can't blame him if collectively as ateam we don't take those opportunites and on top of all that get a key bloke sent off.

You can, however, slate the continued defensive shitness that saw us concede a terribly soft goal in the first place.

As he himself said the other week, it's hard to win matches when you gift the opposition a goal or two a match.

yep. I think that's as much down the cards dealt though. He might be doing all he can in training to make them better but if they ain't got it, they ain't got it.
Well he has been there 5 months now and didnt buy a centre half/left back in the transfer window so thats his fault

I think these ones were good in a counter attacking system where we just needed to stand tall and clear the ball. Ask them to play a bit and they're not up to it.

I don't care that they can't play a bit, it's just the normal defending from a corner that I expect.

Yes, that's the worrying thing.

It's very difficult to sign anyone in January, obviously, but when we see the defence not seeming to be able to do the basics week after week, it is bemusing.

I'm not arguing with you, but a lot of it is down to confidence. Heading a football away and marking players shouldn't need to be taught.

Makoun's tackle was a red, Young's yellow was well earned - more players should get yellows for continuous dissent.

The pen was a tough call, looked liked he got the ball and Young's constant complaining didn't help his cause.
