I heard Bent was our seventieth England player. Does that mean we are now on 71, as it was Downing's first cap as a Villa player as well?
-
Do you mean against denmark? There were 3 villa players with 4 previous villa players.

No, I don't mean we had 70 or 71 Villa players playing against Denmark the other night. I meant over the last 137 years. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
-
No I think he means overall
70 england players have been capped whilst playing for England?
-
71 was what I worked it out as. Might have been wrong.

God this is more complicated than I thought.
70 or 71 Villa players have played for England.

Anything official? Gabby was number 66 I think.
-
Central news said more villa players capped than any other team for England but I thought they said 72, not sure though.
-
71 apparently - someone's done the hard work already:
http://www.lerwill-life.org.uk/astonvilla/england_players.htm
It would be 72 if you include Scott Carson who played for England whilst on loan to us. By that measure, Kyle Walker wouldn't count either.
-
We've got a lot of one-cap wonders in there.
-
Some simply fantastic names there, Gordon Sidney Cowans, Earl Delisser Barrett and my personal favourite Ugochuku Ehiogu
-
Surely if Carson was picked on the back of playing for villa he would count ? He was playing for villa at the time he was picked, same as when walker was picked his club was named in brackets as Aston villa .

And Ivanhoe of course, but Lerwill misses that one out. Good work otherwise though John.
My first ever paid article was about Villa's England contribution.

How much wood would an Ugochuku chuck if an Ugochuku didn't have an ego the size of a small country?

We've got a lot of one-cap wonders in there.
Including the greatest one-cap wonder of all time. Howard Vaughton. Played one, won one, scored FIVE. Never picked again.
-
Marc Albrighton will be the 72nd!
-
Blimey! I can only assume it was a friendly against an under-strength Lichtenstein reserve side.
Watching that Denmark game and seeing how many players on the pitch had a Villa connection was quite something. And then Downing came on!
-
Fuck England; we're the Villa - bigger and better!

70 or 71 Villa players have played for England.
Sorry I meant to say Villa :-[
-
71 players is even more impressive when you consider there were only 5 in the 40 years between 1940 & 1980.
-
Central news say 72 but maybe they have counted Scott Carson which seems fair enough as he was playing for villa and being paid by villa at the time he was picked for england.
-
It still makes me feel proud to have so many Villa players playing for England.
-
A team of Villa developed and/or current and/or recent players would not be too bad at all :
Carson - Warnock, Cahill, Barry, L. Young - Downing, A.Young, Milner - Gabby, Heskey, Bent
Reserves - Albrighton, Delph, Delf, Walker and err.. err.. Mazrim as reserve GK
Edit - Maz can start as the goalie and Carson can sit on the bench!
-
Looking at the list of Villa capped players two names sadly stand out as not being on the list, Dennis Mortimer and Gary Shaw. Our European cup winning captain being sadly underated and Shaw's career ending too soon.
Did Ian Taylor ever make an England squad?

I'd have Myhill in goal if he's English. Carson on bench - no offence Maz.
-
Wasn't Barry captain against Trinidad when he scored in a Jack Walker love in game before going to Man City?

David James?

I do recall Tayls making a squad one time. I might be wrong. Maybe a provisional.
I definitely remember Draper and Wright getting call ups around 96.

Plays for Wales.
