I was filling up at a petrol station over here in sunny Aus and an older gentleman stopped me before I got back in my car.
He said to me he was sorry to disturb me and hoped I didn't mind, but were my number plates significant to anything. I asked him what he thought they were and he said to me Aston Villa with our year of formation?
I laughed and said he was the first person to pick it out without prompting. He then told me he'd been a Villa fan since he was a kid. He'd seen them on TV and said to his dad that he wanted to follow that football club. He's been a fan since '75 and has watched them whenever he has been able to. He's never been to England, but loves The Villa!
Thought it would be something nice to share in all the doom and gloom!

You dont happen to own a red Volvo do you by any chance? I've seen one around the Barossa Valley in South Australia with a similar plate
-
Then, as you left the forecourt, you ran over his foot

On a perhaps related note, my Roma-supporting father-in-law, who is in his seventies, walks and cycles around town here during the winter wearing the Villa scarf and gloves that we bought him for Christmas a couple of years ago. A couple of weekends ago he told me that the evening before he'd been in the supermarket and, when he got to the checkout, the chap on the till saw them and said to him, 'Aston Villa?', to which he replied, 'They always lose!'
Obviously, when he told me I immediately pointed out that we had just beaten Man City!

Getting used to being isolated from Villa, it's always amusing to come back to the midlands. Hey look! A bloke in a Villa top! Another one! And there! Oh yeah, that's right, they're everywhere over here.
-
Hope you paid for the petrol ;-)
-
Keep spreading the word of Aston Villa FC around the world my Claret & Blue brothers.
-
Oops sorry and sisters.

I might see if 1874 MAN is available over here.

No it isn't. (http://www.gov.im/lib/docs/post//cherishednumbers0202101.pdf)
Mind you, even if it was I can think of a better way of spending £2,500.

I lost my keys in our village just outside Perpignan (pop. 7000). They were returned that day (Villa key fob). Then I lost my phone and it was returned ("I suffer with Aston Villa" screensaver/wallpaper). I left my wallet in the post office (France Lions club card inside). I can also leave my umbrella anywhere without fear. And my laptop. And my car. The only thing I had better not do is forget my pants if I do the mayor's wife.

My mate out here has avfc 1

Villa stickers, Villa dice on my car... I would get a AVFC plate but I have a work vehicle so I can't change the plates but when I need one I am heading straight to the licence office for one in Saskatchewan.

Just back from a week's boarding in Niederau, Austria, during which I stayed at Pension Enzian (http://www.enzian.com/). Walked into the dining area on the first night to be spot an early 80s Villa scarf pinned proudly above the door. The omens were good and rightly so. The weather and the place were awesome all week.

willywombat, I am in NSW, not SA......I tried to get AVFC, but the day I decided to get it, someone else got it! So I went for something more subtle that only a real football supporter would spot.
Most people ask me if it's my initials and birth date - 1874, really people?
-
I have AVFC myself. Saw the claret Volvo again over the weekend, it apparently belongs to a friend of my son's whose family originally hail from Kingsbury. Next time i see it parked up i'll take a picture and post it here

Might be referring to 1/8/1974.
I like the subtlety of it.

Very forgetful generally.....I'm guessing early onset Alzheimer's?
Do try and remember to remove said 'pants' before going 'toilet'.....
