Sticking NRC in for this one is far from the worst idea I've ever heard.Explain.... Something in front of the back 4 would work and playing without Petrov would play into his hands.
I would go with a proper 4-5-1 Friedel, Cuellar, Walker, Clark, Collins, Downing, Bradley, Makoun, A Young, Bent, with Albrighton, Heskey and Agbonlahor as impact subs. And the other player mate? Showboating with starting with 10

Where has our defence gone wrong? last year they were pretty good, we've got the same players availeable. The only thing i can think of is Milner has been missed as an extra defender.
Surprised a few people are leaving Bradley out of their team selections, I think he will start , just seen makoun withdrawn from cameroon squad tonight , hope it's not too serious! It's just a precaution as has slight calf strain.Should be fit for Sat
I'd rather win this game than any other game this season.
Getting the first goal will be important, we should then not be chasing it
Agree.Getting the first goal will be important, we should then not be chasing it
Yeah, but then please DO NOT SIT BACK AND TRY AND DEFEND A ONE GOAL LEAD

Not sure if its been mentioned but we have conceded the most amount of goals from corners in the Premier League this season. Blackpool have scored the most. Both 11.
Great not sure what you guys think but for me Friedal has been at fault for most of our corners he just doesnt command the box well enough

Hello all,new poster on here.Got a feeling we,re in for a nine goal thriller on saturday and really looking forward to this.
Slightly off topic i know, but came across a website that features hotels with discounted rates for away supporters.
Sorry if i,ve broken any rules on here, just thought it might be useful.
Just read a Holloway interview in their local Blackpool rag - he's going to welcome Houllier and Villa with open arms.
He bears us no grudge, he reckons.
can't be arsed to post the full story or paste the link.
Anyone know if the pleasure beach is open this weekend? I know it would be nicer to visit Blackpool in September but I'm hoping that is won't be a ghost town with all the attractions closed?
Welcome Nuneaton av and thanks for the info.

The pleasure beach is open every Saturday and Sunday. You do however, have to shell out 20 odd sheets just to get in these days.
Blackpool have scored and conceded in every one of their home games this season. I envisage that statistic will change this weekend.
4. We come from behind to win 3-2 with two blatantly offside goals in the last few minutes...
gabby and albrighton to come on as impact subs if it all goes tits up.
Have you read about their goalkeeping issues? Only Kingston is half fit, so Beattie is down as reserve goalie... We should be smelling blood hereBeattie would fill most of the goal though.
Blackpool 2 Aston Villa 6

I really hope that our players are reminded of Holloway's comments that we are 'a two bob club who used to be famous with a manager who is on a sticky wicket' before this game.
Our fantastic away support won't need reminding and I hope we give the pug-faced gollum lookalike a right tonking to send them spinning back where he, and they, belong.
We have got to beat them, we simply have to.
Who said Richard Kingston is a good goalkeeper?!?!?!?! WTF!! Hahaha. He's an absolute joke. My wife is from Ghana, I've 'endured' most Ghana games (Cup of Nations/ WC) at the in-laws, the man is laughed at even in Ghana. They realise though that he's about one of four people who play in goal in Ghana.
Shoot from long range the bloke will spill it every time, whip the ball in and watch him fly past it in comical style.
Sign him up!

And Friedel doesn't make mistakes? He is still classed as a good keeper but Brad fucks up so often it's not funny.

No he doesn't. What a ridiculous thing to say. He had one bad game and all of sudden he's Scott Carson or Rob Green in some people's eyes. FFS
Is that squad officially 'provisional' or in fact 'Mirror guesswork'? Because if it's official, then that's Bannan preferred to Pires and still nowhere for Delph. I guess Bannan will miss out from what I read in GH's comments the other day, and the same goes for Delph, but hey, preferred to Pires would be a step forward.
Have to agree friedal has had more than one bad game but he is still more reliable than some keepers , I would certainly be looking to replace him in the summer though.
I thing for sure is that the score won't start with Blackpool 0

ONE bad game? Are you serious? He runs so hot and cold does Friedel. He has made lots of errors and although they are not of the Carson/Green variety a goalkeeper does not have to let the ball run under his body or through his legs to be at fault. His command of the area is abysmal and I feel that his positioning at times is woeful. One bad game it certainly is not.
Edit: And is it "a ridiculous thing to say" because YOU don't agree with it? Look at our goals against, the defence can't be TOTALLY at fault.
Have to agree friedal has had more than one bad game but he is still more reliable than some keepers , I would certainly be looking to replace him in the summer though.
That's about the size of it. He should have done better v Fulham but I struggle to recall any total howlers from Friedel; he won't be our No.1 next season. I'd see if we can get him in a coaching capacity but also register him as a player so he can act as emergency goalkeeper if we're in a tight spot.
But there's a world of difference between Friedel and Richard Kingston, such a massive difference in class I can't even sum it up.
agree he is tentative at best coming for the ball and not commanding his area, he still pulls off some great shot stoppers, but this is a position we need to sort out for next seasonHave to agree friedal has had more than one bad game but he is still more reliable than some keepers , I would certainly be looking to replace him in the summer though.

I agree with that but why does a keeper have to make a "howler" in order to make a mistake? As proper football fans I'd hope that we can see more than the blatantly obvious and if people can't see that he has had way more than one bad game then they are not watching. As another poster said, our defending of corners has been awful this season and we have conceded more goals from set pieces than ANY other team in the league. His movement off the line is suspect, he seems to rush out even when he has no chance of getting there before the striker. The keeper simply must carry the can for that.
This led to a final count down the following week at home to Sunderland. We won 2.0 in front of 57,000,but as they say "that is another story"
In 1975 we played Blackpool at their tip on [o.k 3 days later] my 19th birthday. It also coincided with our promotion run in and Easter.Just found this pic of the game. The Holte doesnt look that full compared to other games in the 70's 80's but 57,000 must have meant it was packed? Is that record for the 2nd Division?
To celebrate the ocasion I did what at the time was a regular thing , that was to organise two coaches to the game.
I had two coaches arrive outside the back of New Street station, next to the Mulberry Bush.
My sales pitch was to go onto the station and offer a ticket cheaper than the football special along with the added attraction of being able to stay late and drink in Blackpool.
It was a very attractive offer and the coaches were packed. We had the obligatory stop at Tescos first so that we could stock up on whatever the special was for the day.
Off we went.
As an aside this used to be a very profitable venture. As an apprentice earning +/- 25 pounds a week I could make about 50p a seat. 2 coaches @ 52 seats per coach X 50p = 52pounds profit.
To put that into perspective, a pint was about 50p.
We were in Blackpool in time for quite a few pints before the game.
My Villa record book says that the attendance was 20,762. there had to be 10,000 Villa fans there that day.
To be sure of promotion we had to win and Sunderland had to lose.
We did our bit and won 3.0
Early news was that Sunderland had lost. This lead to celebrations and Congas all around the ground and onto the pitch.
The news was wrong and I think that Sunderland drew. This led to a final count down the following week at home to Sunderland. We won 2.0 in front of 57,000,but as they say "that is another story"
Back to Blackpool 1975, what a night. Ten thousand Villa fans celebrating what we were assured was promotion.
Fnaly,homeward bound.
The coach dropped us off outside New Street in the early hours.
My abiding memory is, that despite making two weeks earnings as a profit I did not have enough money for the night service fare on the 14 bus to get home.
I hope that tomorrow we get a similar result and that all those going have a great day out.
Meanwhile I shall be enjoying some great memories while following the match thread.
For interest the coach company was Sealandair , I know Bernie was on the coach, but any other old steamers lurking out there, post a note.
It could be you that I owe the bus fare to !

Nowhere near. We got more than 60,000 before the war against Coventry, and in 1974-75 Manchester United's average was over 50,000.
And the 3rd and 4th divisions while you're at it! :) I think we are pretty close for the 3rd - or was a Sheffield derby game? Can't find on the net which game was the highest for the 2nd division - over to you guys!Just found this pic of the game. How come?
Pravda:
"Gerard Houllier will be happy to shake hands with Ian Holloway this afternoon - and will even give him a hug if he wants."
Ain't that sweet?

I was in the Holte under the V floodlight for that game and it was indeed heaving. You simply couldn't move.
Am absolutely gutted, I've had food poisoning all week and have not made the trip. have you sold your ticket ?
I really think we will win this one, haven't a clue by what score though!
Any one know if Petrov and/or Makoun played midweek?
This is how I remember the Sunderland game:

The Blackpool game was brilliant, we were building up so much momentum, a League Cup win, great football and heading for promotion, nobody wanted to miss a game no matter where it was. It was a midweek game and I remember my dad coming to my school to take me out early. As usual they'd be loads of cars with Villa scarves hanging out the window as we drove up. We were Saunders' Army and there was no stopping us as we invaded Blackpool. Magical times.
Anyone know any pubs in mids showing the game ?
Petrov is on 99 caps and is listed as Bulgaria captain on Wiki so I doubt he's retired just yet.

Your memory is playing tricks on you, Mark. Blackpool was on the Saturday, Sheffield Wednesday was the midweek game when their end was full of Villa and we clinched promotion.
I was supposed to be going to Blackpool with my mate and his dad but they let me down. Didn't let on to my mom and got the coach up on my own. Not having a clue what I was doing when I got there I paid to get into the wrong stand then had to ask a copper to let me change ends. Another copper then accused me of trying to take a weapon into the stand, it was a Mars Bar, and said I either had to eat it or he'd have it. So that left me, just a school kid, on my own with nothing to eat and hardly any money. It was fantastic.

That game v Sunderland was my first experience of a first team game. Ten years old, sat in the Witton with my Grandad. I'd only been to a few reserves games before that.
