Post by: Legion on February 04, 2011, 06:21:16 PM
Available Saturday afternoon.

VILLA: Friedel; Walker, Dunne, Collins, Clark; Downing, Petrov, Makoun, Agbonlahor, Young; Bent.
Subs: Marshall, Delfouneso, Pires, Cuellar, Heskey, Reo-Coker, Albrighton.

Fulham: Schwarzer, Pantsil, Hangeland, Baird, Sidwell, Johnson, Murph, Duff, Hughes, Dempsey, Demble

No Bradley in the squad, suppose only having a days training wasn't the best preparation. Hopefully see him in full swing next week against Blackpool,

No Bannan again?

Gabby in on the wing rather than Albrighton?

So just Gabby for Marc. More predictable than GHou's line-ups usually have been lately. Petrov not cast into the darkness then.

I'd rather have Albrighton than Downing.

disappointed that Bradley didn't make it, but makes sense I suppose. He'll be big for us over the balance of the season so no need to rush him in. We have enough in that line up to win.

I'm guessing they had a chat and GH got his point across.

Hmmm, would of liked to have seen Coker and Makoun, both played really well together against Wigan.

Still a good team with lots of options on the bench.

Good team, that. I'm assuming it's a sort of 4-3-3;

                        Friedel

     Walker    Collins     Dunne     Clark

            Makoun Downing Petrov

Young                                    Agbolahor

                         Bent

Not sure why Bannan is being kept out by Pires? Contractual obligation maybe? Bannan would be great running at someone like Hangeland, who has the turning circle of a cross channel ferry!

I agree, he was my MOTM vs. Blackburn, so it's a shame that he's being left out.

                         Bent

Actually, that could also turn into a pretty smart looking 4-4-2, with Downing on the left wing, Young on the right and Gabby up front with Bent.

Anyhoo, I'm off to watch this one in the pub - have fun everyone!

After he was especially praised by Houllier following the Blackburn game I assume Bannan's non-selection in the last two games is down to a minor injury as it is difficult to justify in other ways.

You would have thought so but McAllister didn't mention it at all when asked about injuries in the press conference yesterday.

Not selecting him ahead of Pires at least on the bench is, at best, fucking mysterious if he isn't injured.

Hogg starts for Pompy
Lowry starts for Sheffield United
Osbourne doesn't even make the bench for Sheffield Wednesday
Weimann on bench for watford even though he scored in the last game
Guzan starts for Hull

Unemployment is very high. I believe it is higher than Merseyside. I think the position has a bit to do with it by next season when things will look up more we will be getting greater numbers through the turnstiles.

4 wins and we're fine safety wise. All of the teams between 6th and 15th can change spots, so we need to make it all account between now and Arsenal. I still worry about us defensively, but you can see the attacking part of our game really coming along.

No, fair enough, but even at that price, even for the few times like today where we're not shown it's money well spent. The next 10 or so games are not going to be high profile so we might have a few more weekends like this scrambling around for dodgy streams. Just makes it a little easier.

Despite being 1-0 up we have been really ordinary. This Young in the hole, Downing right and Gabby left is plain not working. Whenever our midfield get the ball and I think both of them have done ok - Gabby doesnt really want it and will turn inside, Downing is practically playing in centre midfield and Young is hiding from it. Bent too needs to offer a bit more of an out ball. Defensively we have been solid apart from Collins with a mad rush from the defensive line for Sidwell's chance. As with the away game three points are for the taking here but Houllier needs to change the formation.

Im not a huge Bannan fan but Pires ahead of him on the bench is a nonsense. Game is crying out for someone like him really. Get the feeling from Ashley Young that he has left the club in spirit. Wouldnt be averse to him being replaced actually at half time.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Fulham Match Thread
Post by: Holtenderinthesky on February 05, 2011, 03:56:38 PM
Ashley Young's through balls are ALWAYS to heavy and it is costing us goals.  When will he learn to put a perfectly weighted ball through to Bent?

Walker is average at best, after starting so well at Sheff Utd.

Tony Gale (co-commentator on Villastreams) is a London biased Villa hating tosser.

Other than that it's been a good half and Makoun is class, just what we need.  Better deliveries and we will win this easily.  Problem is though, we haven't had a shot on goal yet have we!?

Still a little too early to say Fergal. But the signs are positive. I don't think he's happy with the defence as neither Collins and Dunne are that comfortable with the ball at their feet. Especially Dunne. I would imagine we'll see CB's arrive that are a bit more athletic and quicker in the summer. Still, he's done very well in my opinion given when he took over, the problems he encountered, and for the fact he's only had one transfer window.

With 4 goals by the 80th minute in Villa games, there has been another goal in only one of the last five home games.

When drawing in the 78th minute Fulham have drawn 9 out of last 10 away against bottom half teams.

I hope those who predicted three or four nil for this one to us now have a better sense of perspective; because we are still not very good

Amazing day with 7 goals each at Wigan and Everton. Wigan still ahead as now are Everton...

Fulham wouldnt have scored today without Friedel;s fuck ups. They are an awful football team and yet they dont deserve to be losing which says it all.

Obviously a brain freeze on the bench too. Gabby should have been taken off 20 mins ago

This is the Fulham team that beat Spurs 4-0 last week.  Nobody should have been predicting 4-0 to Villa today.

Newcastle back to 4-3, three games now with 7 goals or more. MOTD will have to devote about 1 minute to each match to fit it all in!
