Baker making his first start got me thinking, surely this must be the most players we've given league debuts to this season.
All the youths, Baker, bannan, Herd, Hogg with the likes of Makoun, Bent etc. Makes a change from that fixed 11 plus Carew coming on for Heskey in the 70th minute over the last 18 months.

I reckon we had quite a few players making their league debut during the 1888-89 season.
-
Sheff Wed away when it was BFR first game springs to mind, probably 6 or 7 debuts.
-
1946-47 would have had a few.

Hehe - obvious. (when was last season before that?, and did some players play both sides of the war?)
-
Lichaj, Clark, Baker, Herd, Hogg, Albrighton, Bannan, Makoun
Any more? Could go over 11
Gary Gardner, Weimann (did he play first game) have been around the squad...Stieber also?
-
Ireland, Pires.

There were a few games in 1939-40.

Albrighton and Clark made their league debuts LAST season.
So far this season we've had 11 debutants - Pires, Ireland, Bannan, Weimann, Hogg, Licah, Herd, Baker, Walker, Bent & Makoun.

Under DOL I remember we went to West Ham and got smacked 4-0 (Harewood hat-trick) and IIRC there were 4 or 5 debuts in that game alone; Bouma, Laursen etc...
For a whole season though this must be up there as I can't recall so many youngsters coming through at the same time.
-
What about the number of captains we have had in one season i make it 5 so far :)
-
I would imagine that the most league debuts could well have been 1888-89. Certainly every player who appeared would have made their league debut that season...

As Dave W. says, there was a handful of games in 39-40, in fact each team played just 3 before the outbreak of WW2, Blackpool being the only team to win all three!
To answer Edvard's question, the following made first team appearances in both the 38-39 and 46-47 seasons:-
Broome, Cummings, Callaghan, Edwards, Houghton, Iverson, Kerr, Martin, Rutherford, Starling and Wakeman.
