I can't see that this has been mentioned elsewhere, but Tony Morley was at the Cat & Fiddle in Great Barr last night, and it looks like there will be further visits to Great Barr pubs by both Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion players:

I don't know if there's any kind of schedule though. The Express & Star might know I guess.

Anyone drinking in a pub in Great Barr a shock let alone a villa player!
Cat and Fiddle a shit hole

Sounds like a line Buju Banton might sing.

And he would have done had he ever the misfortune to drink in Great Barr.
-
It was a sports forum organised by the landlord George Kirkham.
-
Apparently George Kirkham was Gabby's manager when he played for Great Barr Falcons. My own personal opinion is that a sports forum that doesn't include current Villa staff is just a chat and reminiscing,no real insight as to what's going on at the moment.

Tony Morley turned up at the Yenton last summer. He said he was just passing and fancied a pint in a Villa pub! Legend!

I used to think the Cat & Fiddle was alright until I turned 16. There were no good pubs in Pheasey back in the 70s - 80s, and I assume it is no different today.

Well you've got the Old Horns, and The Trees / Schofields is now a Chinese restaurant.
Yeah you're right, its no different today.

I agree its not well off for pubs at all.The Cat and Fiddle every now and then has a £500 makeover and that's it! Would drink anywhere other than the Pheasey.

I used to serve Tony Morley in a pub in Mere Green (ooh get me). Very nice bloke indeed but to hear he turns up at several different boozers across the region is not altogether a shock if you get me.
Also served Townsend (arrogant), Southgate (pleasant) Andy Gray (grumpy) and Trevor Eve (miserable but he'd just been to a funeral)

I'd heard that Gabby had been in the Cat & Fiddle last year (my parents live near there), at the time I thought that was weird, but that may explain why.

Big up Great Barr.
The Scotts Arms is where it's at yo.

Excuse me, I had a mixed grill at the Cat & Fiddle on Sunday and it was very nice. Decent pint too. Adnam's.

I believe a popular haunt for Villa old'uns is Bar 82 in Sutton, which as you can guess is named for a certain evening in Rotterdam. I used to work with a woman whose husband owned the place, and its sole purpose was to provide somewhere the chap could socialise with his heroes. She was less than complementary about pretty much all of them and also claimed many of them had sold her husband a lot of their memorabilia from said night in Rotterdam.

Very disrespectful to some decent watering holes and people of Great Barr. No need.
"Cat and Fiddle a shit hole".......grammar speaks volumes really.

The old horns, scott arms and cat will never make the CAMRA guide. I lived in Great Barr from 1977 to 1998 and pubs never been up to much and when I go back now they have not changed. The cat is a shit hole but it beats the drakes drum !

Actually the Old Horns has changed a fair bit since 1998. I know because I worked there between 1997 and 2006. And it's changed since I left let alone since you left Great Barr in 1998. They're all much more based around food nowadays. The Deers Leap, now that hasn't changed.
-
I used to work behind the bar at the Drake's Drum.

Oh yeah, in the 'shit sodden streets'. A bit over the top to say the least.

Throw it back in your court.tWhat pub in Great Barr does decent food , fresh cooked to a decent standard. Nothing expensive , just a decent carvery?
Horns, Cat and Fiddle, Drum, Kingfisher , Scott Arms , Towers dont.
They never have and also they dont serve a decent ale etc. I am not saying they dont serve the community they do but it is microwaved food and Carling at 1.99!
I do know as I parents live in Gt Barr and I visit them every other week and we end going for a meal occasionally at the cat at 3.99 for a lovely chips and fish. There the target market being pensioners etc, dont get me wrong I think Great Barr got a few great curry houses!

Try having a walk around Jayshaw Avenue and the Roads off it, also have a walk through the nature reserve off Eastwood Road.
There is dog shit everywhere and seems to be an expected thing to do around here.
I've bollocked two people who allowed their dogs to do it on the pavement by mine, they look at you like you're an insane dog hater.

What's wrong with IPA and Adnam's? They are decent beers. And IPA Green King was going for £1.99. I can't see what's wrong with that.
-
To return to the main point, Tony Morley was there (possibly having a pint of Green King for £1.99 which I say would be a good choice) in aid of Help for Heroes.
-
The Cat's my local. Just got back from there actually
-
Towers is great. Can't beat their mixed grill. Even from a microwave.
Carvery at the Malt Shovel is pretty good. But I reason it's a Baggies pub.

This is now called Oscars.Restaurant 82 has now gone.I had lunch there and it was miles better than Restaurant 82.

Going back to Tony Morley, from what I read it was Tony Morley and Bob Taylor,Bob is now assistant manager at Tamworth FC.
