Another big game.

We really need another win here to start to pull away from the 'pack', a draw wouldn't be the end of the world though. Hopefully we'll have to much quality for the,

This time I will be wise and put a bet on Bent to score.

Makoun should really solidify the middle of the park with his presence and ability to drive the game on. Wigan play open football, which should suit us as it has done down the past few seasons up there.

This has got to be approached with a very professional attitude. Makoun will give a massive buzz to the team. My mate supports Lyon and has told me we are in for a real bonus, as we do not realise what a great player we have signed ........

Friedel - Walker, Collins, Dunne, Clark - Petrov, Makoun - Albrighton, Downing, Young - Bent.

subs: Parrish, Cuellar, Baker, NRC, Bannan, Agbonlahor, Heskey (reluctantly leaving Delf out altogether)

And I reckon that will be enough for a hard fought 1-0 win. You know who to score.

Agree with team spot on ...is going to be a bot harsh on Clark at some stage but when Luke Young comes back to play at LB, that will be our strongest staring 11 and Bench  for ages

One of the very few teams ever in the Premier league that it's quite difficult to name their starting line up and they are having a bit of an injury crisis in defence.

Makoun can kick Insomnia off the pitch and we should do alright. (Please God)

2-4.
Couple from some dodgy South Americans for them.
Bent hat trick and a sneaky back post header from Clark to seal it.

I cant see how he can drop Carlos after yesterday and the defence was immense and I personally am worried about Walker defensively, he is one for the future but we need the points

Wigan are weak, so I think we should go 4-4-2 and give Heskey a run up front with Bent.

Give Albrighton a rest and play Downing and Ashley on the wings, Makoun and Petrov in the middle.

We've got more bodies now, so we can shuffle things round a bit and give players the odd rest.

Be a risk to start with Makoun, I reckon. He'll only have had a couple of days with us and he's completely new to English football. Give hin 20 minutes and let him make his first start in the cup game.

Houllier isn't afraid to make the changes that MON never did. Might as well keep players in form and tweak it gently.

How about this?

Friedel

Walker
Collins
Cuellar
Clark

Albrighton
Bannan
Reo-Coker
Makoun
Young

Bent

Give Gabby, Dunne and Downing a rest?

Worried about the effect yesterday's high intensity performance might have on us for this one. Our inability to pass the ball or retain it means we have to play in a way which must be very draining. I always thought the same during the MON era. Hopefully, that will be negated by the confidence gained from the City result and we can sneak this one 1-0 or 2-1

This is a"must win" game make no mistake. Do not take the foot off the pedal. Man city was a fantastic result and to get anything less than a win would be a big step backward. Give Makoun 20 mins second half according to how the game is going ........

Don't see this as a must win game to be honest...four points from these two game would have done...6 would be fantastic.

I hope he does make changes and freshens things up...GH isn't a one trick pony so hopefully he will set the team up to play Wigan away, a totally different proposition from Saturday, and not go with the "never change a winning side theory".

The team worked so hard against Man City I fear this tuesday game may be coming a little too soon for a potentially leggy set of players.

While I'd love a win, I'll be happy enough with a draw. A defeat at Wigan, followed by a visit to Old Trafford could see us back in the bottom three.

A draw wouldn't be a bad result.

It's not a "must win" in the sense of the battle against relegation, but it's a vitally important match all the same.

If we win this and maybe get a point at Old Trafford, I reckon we've built ourselves a platform for a charge up the table - we'd certainly have  a head of steam worked up.

I just hope we don't repeat the Chelsea - Sunderland let down and lose the momentum.

3-1 Villa

Would like to see Makoun start, if he's been keeping himelf fit during the process of negotiations and getting clearance then he should be in good physical condition.  He has to adapt to English football at some point so throw him in at the deep end.

Bent, Clark and Downing for us.   Rodallega for them.

This is an absolutely vital game to win.  If we do, we'll be 6 points clear of Wigan with a much better goal difference.  We'll also be around midtable, which would obviously give everybody a big confidence boost.  Lose, and we then play Man U still firmly entrenched in the relegation mire.

Huge, huge, must win game.

Be nice to see a win, but its not yet must win game territory a draw will do nicely. What bothers me is after such a sterling effort against Man City how affected will the players be, we seem to have this habit of coming down with a bump after a good performance. Still not enough consistency.

Winnable game though, although I have a secret hope for beating Utd.

This is a crucial game, more so than the Man City match. Villa should hopefully be up for it though, Makoun will hopefully get his debut, and we can see more of the fighting spirit and team togetherness that we have seen over recent weeks.

That said Wigan can be incredibly poor or quite good. We do have a better squad though, and I fully expect another win.

Glad Makoun had a chance to watch the Man city match. He can now see the spirit and battling required and expected for Aston Villa. Not sure he will start but from what i have watched and read about him, he is going to be a massive player .........

Why won't he start Makoun and Heskey?  The lads have just had a couple of weeks off, they must be as ready to play as they will ever be.  Walker should be fit, and Wigan's 1st choice centre backs are both out.  This is not a must win, it's a will win.

Not according to the man who will be picking the side who has included him almost every time he's been able to.

Makoun is new to Englsih football and has had little time to get know the players so it would be a risk.

I think it worth introducing Makoun at Wigan rather the unpredictability of a FA cup game or at OT.   He is a big lad, he will be fine.

I really think Bent would benefit from Bannan playing. Bannan has the kind of vision that nobody other than Petrov has in our squad, and is much less afraid to try things than Petrov, and with the kinds of runs Bent makes Bannan could set up hatfuls of chances for him/us.

I'm going for 1-2. Nzogbia for them. Ash and Albrighton for us. I'll be there at the DW and can't wait.

Really can't believe that people are saying they'd settle for a draw tomorrow. We're 4 points off the bottom of the table and playing against one of our competitors for survival!!

I've every confidence that we'll stay up, but until we reach 42 points (think it'll take that this year) I'm not counting my chickens. Its a complacent attitude that has got "teams too good to go down" relegated in the past.

Houllier never plays 442 so can't see much chance of that. I agree in principle that bannan's vision could support bent, but barry's confidence seems to be low of late. O think either NRC or makoun will start, but unless he does something odd like play heskey on the left I think we'll be otherwise unchanged. Posible exception of walker for cuellar, or perhaps albrighton.

True.

I'd rather Albrighton play tonight though. Big, wide pitch with lots of room to run at whipping balls into Bent. A win tonight would be massive and I feel we've got to play our best team to ensure we go 6 points ahead of our opponents tonight.

I wouldn't leave Albrighton out; best crosser of the ball in the side, currently.

If Makoun's in reasonable shape - and he's been training with Lyon and playing regularly so there's no reason he shouldn't be - it would be good to give him an hour. Get him up to speed as quickly as we can with the trip to Old Trafford this weekend.

I'd be tempted to move Downing over to the left, have Gabby on the bench. Scope for change later in the game if we need or want to - Downing off, Ash wide left, Gabby on as a front two with Bent.

Has looked like a must win game ever since it was called off in Dec. Saturday's result makes it slightly less must win now, but it would be great to pull away from the dross and look higher up the table.

I would have backed us to win the game had it gone ahead in Dec, following on from the Olbiyun game. The way this season has gone though, you just don't know.

Wigan have the players to cause any side a problem, they've given a few big teams nosebleeds up there in recent years and they'll still be smarting after Saturday's drubbing at Arsenal.

A win would put daylight between us and the genuine relegation contenders but whatever we do, we must not lose. That would open the thing right up again.

1-1 draw, us with a late equalizer.

Thinking about it I'd  defiantly play NRC, we need freshness in the team tonight.

With them having a makeshift defence (not that their full strength defence is up to much) and our great potential for firepower now having a focus and the defence looking like they're switched on again, I'd be suprised if we dont win this one comfortably.

Still, there are no easy points in this league and if we take them lightly we'll get a bloody nose. But I'm sure we won't.

For games like this I would like to see Heskey partnering Bent but then that leaves me with the dilemma young left, Albrighton or Downing right?

My preference would be Albrighton but what about downing then? Its a nice problem to have

Could keep Downing central as we did v City, with Makoun or Petrov behind him?

Yeah thats the only thing i could think off, i totally thought against Man City he would get overrun although he didnt figure too much it seemed to work

Ash and downing switching wings during game
and/or  Gabby playing left wit Young behind Bent

                                  Friedel

Cuellar..........Collins.............Dunne..........Clark

...................Makoun..............Petrov...................

................Young...................Downing................

........................Bent............Gabby............

Marshall, Walker, Albrighton, NRC, Bannan, Heskey,Fonz

I think any side we put out tonight should have a good chance.  I would like to see a 4-4-2 with Bent and Heskey up front.  Bent would relish Hesky's knock ons.

Hope he plays 2 up top. Gone for a win, whether this is misplaced optimism we'll see. I would have predicted a win for the original fixture as well though. And that was in those dark pre-Bent days!

Easy win for the Villa I reckon.  4-0.  Bent, Downing, Young x2.  ;)

I'd like to see albrighton come on after 60mins. Let him rip down the right at a tired defence. If it's been raining up there to pitch could be quite heavy. Have him come on, and tear them apart with his pace and crossing.

Stick young out on the left or right to start with and bent, gabby or hesky will still have the supply they need.

Spot on Bren.
Plus, his knock ons and passes have been slide rule since Gerard has been here.
I think Bent could make a good partnership with him.

It would be great to see a strike force. I think Heskey & Bent would work. Just not sure Houllier wants to play 442
