Title: Which goal did you and The Villa celebrate most memorably?
Post by: Lucky Eddie on January 20, 2011, 02:48:47 PM
Which one stands out for you?

Rotterdam? for obvious reasons

Bosko? Likewise

Our third at Hillsboro 91?

Our first at Wembley 94?

Phil King?

For me; Dalian's header to force extra time against Tranmere tops every goal celebration I've ever been a part of.

Perhaps not an obvious one but the goal I remember going most mental at was our second in the first leg of the semi against Bolton in 2004. Pulled it back to 3-2 having looked like we'd blown it first half. We  went on to blow it all over again not long afterwards of course.

ps got a few funny looks in the pub with my celebration of Clark's equaliser at Stamford Bridge the other week but not being there doesn't count I guess

SVC's rocket against Athletico Madrid.

Merson's winner against Coventry to send them down.

Cahill's volley aginst the Blues, not just because of who they were but the fear that if we'd lost that game we were likely to go down.

In recent times, Ashley's goal at Goodison and Petrov's late equaliser at Palace last season.  I went bloody mental when that went in.

Most ever, probably the third goal against Tranmere.  Had never seen the Holte go as barmy as that before.

Me and my mates danced for 10 minutes with amazement. We'd been under the cosh the whole game.

Err... as I recall, it was the game where we were neck-and-neck with Manure and despite City fans wanting us to win, we were doing our best to throw away the points.

We got a pen - I think Keith Curle tried to catch the ball in his own box. Parker took the kick, I couldn't watch, in fact I turned my back on it because I knew I could see the result on everyone else's face.

It went mental, even the City fans celebrated.

Gabby's last-min goal in that 2-0 win at Blackburn a couple of seasons back. They celebrated right in front of us. We were on that long unbeaten run and we just looked invincible. When we secured those points I was so convinced we were going to kick on to great things.

What followed was CSKA, Stoke and the beginning of the end of MON.

Exactly what I was gonna say. Heskey was fantastic that game, Milner scored a cracker. We missed a hatful and then Gabby wrapped it up.

We went third didn't we? Singing 'who the fuck are Man United' as we looked to be challenging them. Just went awfully from then onwards.

What followed was CSKA, Stoke and the beginning of the end of MON.

The performance that day was akin to a seasoned title chasing team, we controlled the tempo of the game and it was a really professional performance.

I’ll mention Zat’s injury time equalizer against Arsenal. Cahill’s bicycle kick against the Blose. I also remember a good atmosphere against Leeds in the FA Cup and we went mental when Merson scored if memory serves Carbone got a couple too.

Andy Gray's header v Liverpool in the 1976 5-1 thrashing
John Deehan's first against QPR in the 1977 League Cup semi
Andy Gray's first of a hat trick against the Albion in 1977
Des Bremner away at Leicester in 1981
Peter Withe latching on to a last minute back pass from Brendon Batson in 1981 - truly awesomely mental
Pat Heard's last minute wonder strike at the Albion in 1982
Peter Withe in Rotterdam
Peter Withe at the Sty in 1982 a few days after Saunders had joined them
Sid's headed equaliser v Juventus in 1983
Dalian's in the 1994 League cup final

Lee Hendrie's air shot and follow up at Anfield in 2001
Gary Cahill's against the Blues in 2006

Zat Knight's humdinger v Arsenal in 2008

Sorry for the long list but they are keeping me warm and fuzzy in Shanghai where we have snow and no central heating (not compulsory in buildings in the southern half of China, so landlords skimp and don't install it).

Stan's goal against Atletico Madrid, shortly after he came on. I went absolutely beserk... even my mate started edging away from me.

Cahill's amazing goal against Blues was pretty special too... such a big game, especially considering our league position, and such a brilliantly-taken goal from a young lad. After the celebrations settled down, I was pretty emotional. Looking back on it now, it feels a bit bitter sweet, considering we sold him off not long afterwards.

Vivid memories of that game.  The memory that sticks out the most is Stan Collymore running towards the Holte making "let's be 'avin ya!" gestures.  We were still 2-1 at the time I think.

The goal by Atkinson with two minutes left that got us level in the 1994 semi v Tranmere. The place went barmy and the Witton lane stand actually rocked back and forth for 30 seconds. That game was something special.

great post Luke, reminded me of the Dalian header v Tranmere, I ended up ten yards from where I started in the Holte clutching a piece of coat which I'd ripped off the back of someone in the melee. When we all settled back down again, there he was standing in front of me oblivious to the fact he'd get pelters from his missus when he got home

For me, in order, it would have to be:

3rd - Carbone v Leeds in 2000 FA Cup - watched it in my kitchen at uni when everyone was muttering about how Leeds would turn us over, and then Carbone put that ball in from about thirty-five yards. I fell backwards off my seat and lay on our scrubby student kitchen floor screaming my head off.

2nd - the three goals scored in front of the North Stand during 5-1. Don't get me wrong, the whole game was brilliant but by the fourth our section had developed a kind of weird routine: all pile into each other at the bottom of the stairs just behind the hoarding and go mental. The light of reason had long since disappeared and you could have got me to agree to anything at that point, so out of it was I.

1st - Stan v Atletico Madrid. After being seated between two stupid thugs behind us and the Madrid suppot, my sixteen year old self and my oldest Villa mucker were questioning the wisdom of buying late tickets for this one. Then Stan scored, me and my mate looked at one another in disbelief for a full two seconds, let out a big old primal roar and piled into the aforementioned thugs. I lifted one of them clear off the ground and as we stood there bellowing at one another, I remember thinking I was as happy as it was as possible to be. Shame we didn't go through but I got more out of that game than any other (I wasn't at Tranmere).

Dalian's against Tranmere was just mental, a pure releasing of so much pent-up emotion it was unreal.

Other than that, I reckon I go right back to the Liverpool 5-1 in 76, just because it was one of my first ever games and Brian Little was such a massive hero to me that to see him score against the team everyone said were the best around in a game where we absolutely wiped the floor with them was, to an impressionable 11 year old, just amazing.

I remember that game well - bits of it anyway. I had got the train / boat combo from Paris overnight and then a coach up from London to meet a mate in the Crown & Cushion. A couple of pints before the game and I was nodding off in the Trinity, wondering why I had looked forward to the game so much. The 2 late goals were fantastic and I went mental like you, though my memory is that Platty was going yampy at one of his teammates (or manager?) as they came off the pitch and a few months later he had gone, which would mean it was 1990-91 season. I may be wrong though - I was in an out-of-body feeling for most of that day.

You are right it probably was 90-91, Villa were terrible that day and we robbed them of the 3 points... I didn't realise that about Platt, he was always going to go after italia 90, he was probably tapped up.

Not a goal this but a whole day of celebration - thats Everton away, last game of the season of the 89-90 season.

I think we took about 7000 up and the atmosphere and constant singing was unbelievable.  Hot day, great game, Cowans curling free kick to put us ahead and the emotional send off for SGT about 30 minutes after the final whistle.

One of those days that you were proud to be part of.

Bosco Jancovic for Boro winning the league for us when I thought we'd thrown it away, Peter Withe in Rotterdam but the real one that did it for me was the fourth at Hillsborough in 1975? when we beat them 4-0 to gain promotion to the old first division after years in the doldrums.  It was when the fourth went in I knew we were going to win. ( you never know with the Villa!) After all the shit I'd witnessed to be back in the big time was special. I can't even remember the scorer.

Andy Lochhead's first goal for us. He went a long time before getting his first, and it came as a massive relief.

I think it was against Doncaster at VP, and it was a looping header into the Witton End goal which seemed to take forever to nestle in the top of the net.

A special mention for Dave Simmons, the first skinhead player, for his goal against the Blues. Also Bruce Rioch's goal at The Sty.

We got a pen - I think Keith Curle tried to catch the ball in his own box. Parker took the kick, I couldn't watch, in fact I turned my back on it because I knew I could see the result on everyone else's face.

It went mental, even the City fans celebrated.

Topped off with a rare Ray Houghton goal IIRC, a lob in the dying moments.

Most of the best ones have already been covered, so I'll go for a more recent one: JC's goal that put us - 3-2 up at Reading in the cup after being 2-0 down. Not the easiest game on paper, but a favourable enough draw compared to some of the others available - or so you'd think.

We looked like we'd gobbed a semi final place though, in true Villa style.

Didn't get visibly angry, or start ranting as their first and then second goal went in. Just sat there stewing in my own juices. Then we got our first back, a bit better. The second, more relief than anything else. For the third -and for a reason I'm still not quite sure of- it all went a bit Temuri Ketsbaia at Chez Gage, as I started booting my own leather couch.

Strange...I'd have thought Ashley Young's winner away to Everton a couple of seasons ago might have warranted a mention....

Yeah, there's usually a video of it knocking about somewhere on a thread like this...

Oooh! Oooh! Me! Me!

Ahem:

Bloody brilliant.

I never get bored of watching that goal. Watch it every time you post the link!

I'm gonna put forward a Tony Daley goal vs Manchester City at Christmas 1991. I havent seen it for years so i'll have to dig out the old video. Anyway, if memory serves there's a flick on from Cyrille Regis and Daley hits it on the volley in front of the Holte. A bit like Krancjar's goal on Saturday. Quality goal and the whole ground went beserk.

Savo's equalizer at home to Newcastle in 1997 after we were 2-0 down. A pity then that Yorke blew the chance to make it 3-2 when he shot his penalty tamely at Shaka Hislop to deny us the victory. Bittersweet emotions from that game.

Must have seen hundreds of Villa goals in watching them for 50 odd years, but if i had to pick one it would have to be Pat Mcmahons winner against Man Utd in the league cup semi final at villa park in 1970 . It took us to Wembley which for a 3rd division team was unbeliveable . Dont forget this was a united team including Law.Best,Kidd and Charlton. If i recall it correctly United also scored first.

Pat McMahon's header aginst Man U in 1970 League cup semi
Savo's howitzer in the 1996 final
Lee Hendrie's air shot and follow up at Anfield in 2001
Gary Cahill's against the Blues in 2006
Carew's opener v Blues in the 5-1 demolition
Zat Knight's humdinger v Arsenal in 2008

Sorry for the long list but they are keeping me warm and fuzzy in Shanghai where we have snow and no central heating (not compulsory in buildings in the southern half of China, so landlords skimp and don't install it).

Funny how so many of my favourites are so long ago...

Your namesake's goal at the top of the list, Pat: was that the one where he was very brave and was on the ground injured for a while after scoring, or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Brian Little's Winner in same game
Peter Withe's winner vs WBA 80/ 81 season (great assist from Brendan Batson)
David Platt vs Coventry home 88/89 started off thinking if we lost we'd go down, then a great goal thought we'd get five, ended up drawing 1-1
Andy Townsend vs Arsenal away 93/94
Kent vs Inter

Funniest celebration was returning to the Wembley Busses and notwithstanding us having lost the LCF to Spuds we felt we had won the moral victory. Someone found a galvanised bucket and we carried it back, held high, hundreds of us singing "I aye addio we won the bucket!".

OK it ain't Rotterdam but shit it was funny.

Got to be Witheys goal against the baggies in `81, if ever a goal - possibly Rotterdam apart, was crucial it was that one, crap game, Baggies kickin lumps off anything in Claret n Blue, 0-0 written all over it, league championship on its way to Portman road and everyone knew it - until, 4 minutes from time, a Baggies attack breaks down, Rimmer punts it  downfield - straight to Baggies defender Brendan Batson, what followed is blasted into the memory, Batson plays ball back to Tony Godden, but hasnt seen Withey doing what good strikers do, chasing it down, he lifts the ball with one touch straight over Godden, and into an empty net, queue absolute mayhem, championship back on again, never ever forget that goal long as il live.

I have written about this goal/match a few times but it keeps coming up for me over the years.
The noise that greeted that goal was incredible - a Baggie acquaintance who was there said it was frightening

The other one I remember for the reaction was Sir C Nicholl's at Old Trafford in the LC Final (x3) '77. We were on the side at the other end (near the Everton). The lads went so mad I only just got back up as Sir B of the Little rolled in the second. I did not see that goal for nearly 20 years when I bought the video!

I remember that goal pretty clearly. As the ball went over Godden's head I can remember thinking it didn't have the legs to cross the line. There were 2 Olbion players chasing it down one might have been Peter Barnes, maybe the other was Statham. Funny I can remember us doing nothing for 80 mins until Sir Dennis had a shot parried by Godden from about 20 yards. We seemed to click into gear after that. That baggies side was pretty decent. I think they did us the year after in the Quarter final of the league cup. Having said that we were down to 10 men after Tony Morely got himself sent off afetr the half time whistle. If any of you know Tony and the circumstances behind it can you please find out why and let me know. It's one of life's great mysteries to me.

At games I've been at 3 stick in the mind (from recent years).
Zat against Arsenal, I swear I moved 2 blocks across the Holte when that went in. Great end to (I would suggest) our best performance in years.
Gabby at the Sty in the 1-0. I lost my watch in the crush and badlam when it went in, found it, and then lost it again at full-time.
And Gabby at OT, though it was followed up by immediate nerves, full-time was a relief as much as a celebration.

Any of the five against Liverpool in 1976.
Disbelief at it all.
Liverpool seemed unbeatable in those days.
Ah yes. What a night. After the match we went up town and sat in The Costermonger in stunned silence with stupid grins all over our faces. ;D

Savo at Wembley 96

Daley at West Brom in the cup 1990

Collymore v Athletico

I went especially batshit crazy for all of those. I dont lose control as much nowadays, now i'm older and less drunk.
