Title: Which London team will be the first to re-name?
Post by: Lucky Eddie on January 18, 2011, 11:19:42 AM
In this corporate world that we live in I reckon it's only a matter of time before one of the London clubs attempts to capitolise [see what I did there] on their location and attempt to 'big up' their European pedigree with a name change.

GREATER LONDON SPURS

WEST LONDON RANGERS

EAST LONDON HAMMERS

LONDON ARSENAL

The Olympic Stadium decision could be a deciding factor.

So what odd's on Greater London having a team name after the old smoke, and how would you feel about it?

Which begs the question: "Who owns the name 'London' and would they have to give their permission to the name change?"

If it were up to Boris and some money can be made out of it for a few Toffs - it'll happen sooner rather than later.

It happened years ago. Wimbledon - MK Dons.

Arent they talking about moving to Crystal palace and playing at the athletics track?

Should Millwall be Millwall when they moved south of the river away from Millwall over 100 years ago?

I am also rather concerned that spurs or Chelsea will switch their attention to using Wembley; in fact I'm rather surprised we haven't already seen Premier League football at Wembley.

Tottenham Olympic. That should put a smile on Karren Brady's face.

If she smiled, would grease ooze out of the corners of her mouth? Probably.

They are. But part of Tottenham's plans for Stratford is to redevelop the athletics stadium at Crystal palace so both ideas won't work. I think they'd need to move the ground at some point and will have to probably go south into Surrey.

Or there's the Rugby Union approach; where not actually being anywhere near London is no impediment to having "London" in your club name

I'm pretty sure that's also the Ryan Air approach.

TRIFFIC TRAFFICJAM

Made me chuckle.

In answer to the OP, it will probably be one of the smaller sides. Maybe even as low down as Brentford, Leyton Orient and so on.

Arse-anal, Chelsea and Tottingham have established names and profiles so they don't need it (in saying that, didn't the old CL graphic used to read London Arsenal?)

Should Millwall be Millwall when they moved south of the river away from Millwall over 100 years ago?

But the most important historical link is the old Millwall docker gangs and their traditional hatred of West Ham - they couldn't give that heritage up and become Bermondsey FC.

The new owners at Blackburn could move them down there and reform Blackburn Olympic?
