Title: The Run In
Post by: Des Little on January 16, 2011, 08:59:49 PM
Anyone got a link to a list of the remaining games for the bottom 6/8?  I'd be keen to see how ours compares to the rest as I think we have more winable games left than many around us?

Not that I'm worried or anything... :-X

You could use this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/predictor/default.stm), and just predict the teams you are interested in.

Can you us winning away? I see only 3 potentials in Wigan, West Ham and WBA.

Can u see us winning home or away ?
I can't see us winning too many between now and the end of the season at the moment. I hope Jean II and whatever signings we make before the end of the month hit the ground runnning. We can afford any bedding in time.

After the last couple of weeks (since Chelsea) I'm feeling more positive. i think we can get something vs Man City and should beat Wolves, Blackburn (twice), Wigan, Stoke, Newcastle and Liverpool. Win most of those and we're home and hosed.

West Ham and Wigan are already down imo.

No idea on the 3rd team.

It won't be us though.

I can see WHam bringing in someone (say MON) as manager and this spurring them over the line like last season. Albion are struggling too.
Its so tight at the bottom there are a number of teams who are sitting safely but could get drawn in easily. At least we have the fact we're down there slapping us in the face every time we look at the league table.

At this stage it is quite hard to say two teams are already down when one is two points behind us and the other is only below us on goals scored.

Blackpool will go down I think. I looked at our run in earlier on BBC in comparison to the teams around us and it's 'favourable'

Out of 16 games, we've got 5 against teams that are traditionally top 6 and 11 against teams that are traditionally lower half.  We should get 7 wins from them easily, shouldn't we? Having said that we tend to play better against the better sides.  So, to summarise, fuck knows!

I don't have a list of the other teams fixtures Des but looking at ours I think we will be OK.  In fact, I am still looking at the top half as a real possibility given OUR fixtures from now til May.  51 points is where I see us finishing, more than enough to finish top half.   8)

I think we will end between 45 and 48 points. About 12th. Then the building for next season has to start as soon as the season finishes.

Call me crazy but I still think we'll finish top 10, get our house in order and push on to challenge the top places again.

The run-in as I see it, trying to be positive...

Villa 2 Man City 1
Wigan 0 Villa 2
Man U 4 Villa 6
Villa 2 Fulham 0
Blackpool 0 Villa 3
Villa 2 Blackburn 1
Bolton 0 Villa 4
Villa 12 Wolves 0
Everton 0 Villa 7
Villa 26 Newcastle 0
West Ham 0 Villa 234
Villa 5 Stoke 0
West Brom 0 Villa 11
Villa 0 Wigan 2 (some things never change)
Arsenal 1 Villa 10
Aston Villa 36,943 Relegated Liverpool 0

That leaves us on 67 points, which might just sneak us a Champions League spot.

Plus it's Our Year For the Cup.

Hope I've put all your minds at rest.

I have us finishing on 49 points and ninth with Wigan, Wolve and West Ham for the drop. I wasn't kind to us either. It all depends on the quality coming in doesn't it.

10th to 12th will be good for us this season.

Even if we were to win 7/8 games in the run in, I don't think we will win by big margin.

Our current bad goal difference will cost us.

But...2011/12 Here We Come!

Groan.......the prediction thread!

Anyone remember last season when we were neck and neck with Spurs for fourth and they had, I think, Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal all within a few weeks and won them all? Everyone on here was predicting they would lose all three...just shows the futility of trying to do this

How times have changed eh!

I have printed this and stuck it on the fridge door. Much better than plastic magnetic dolphins jumping over the moon. OK not as realistic mind. But soothing.

I know I shouldnt but I did......

I got us finishing 8th and was so surprised I tinkered with the results and put in some worst case scenarios and got us finishing 12th....

But then again in previous years we qualified for Champions League!

more worried about relegation meself. still, i get 27 points which would put us on 49 points. that seems too optimistic so i'm gonna  knock off 3 of the 'hopefull draws' i've predicted. 46 points should do it.

yeah, i was predicting on a worse case scenario so was a bit surprised i got so many points. But i reckon we've got an easier 2nd half of the season and like you say, two miserable bastards can't be wrong :0)

I tried to err on the pessimistic side and Villa ended up 13th with surprisingly (to me) 41 points.  Wolves, Wigan and West Ham for the drop:

1. Arsenal      87
2. Man Utd     86
3. Chelsea      85
4. Man City     80
5. Spurs         75
6. Liverpool    55
7. Newcastle   52
8. Bolton        52
9. Everton       49
10. Stoke        45
11. Blackpool  45
12. Sunderland 43
13. Villa          41
14. Albion        38
15. Fulham       35
16. Bloose        35
17. Blackburn   33
18. Wolves       32
19. Wigan         32
20. West Ham   30

Since Gerard took over we have dropped 15 points compared to the equivalent 17 fixtures last year after replacing the relegated teams with the promoted teams.

Last year we took 27 points from the equivalent 16 fixtures to the ones we have left to play. So if we suddenly improved enough to be as good as we were last season, we’ll end up on 49 points.

I don’t see any signs that we’re going to suddenly become as effective as we were last season and remain extremely worried about the possibility of relegation. That will only change for me when our results start improving.

You don't see Chelsea 7 Villa 1 to Chelsea 3 Villa 3 as a sign then ?

No

You can't take a single datapoint and make a trend out of it.

You've done very well in identifying the only game since his first match where we have had an improved result over last season. Our defeat against Sunderland (draw last season) and draw with Blues(Won) suggests the corner hasn't been turned yet.

We can and should keep hoping for things to improve but we'll all know when we start seeing better results.

"as good/effective as we were last season".  MON could grind out the results but the football was turgid.

We need 18 points by my reckoning from 16 games.  Just need to tighten up at the back and we'll do it.

I see a similar  run like the 97/98 season when we won 9 of our last 11 games. Only losing at home to Barnsley and Bolton. Both of whom went down.
