Lots of Liverpool and Everton fans amongst the refs, they were probably all gloryhunters during the 80's.
-
The only Villa fan ref I can recall was Dennis Howell - later Minister for Sport, and the man who got us off being kicked out of the European Cup final.
Good men like him don't become refs or politicians anymore.
-
Its always surprised me that Refs dont openly declare who they support so they dont then ref a game involving that team just for transparency.
Dont get me wrong i dont think they would do anything untoward at all but if they made an honest mistake ( and by God they do) then I can imagine the fuss that would be made about it in the mrdia etc.
-
Jeff Winter was pretty open about being a Boro fan, was he the one who thought the Liverpool Kop were applauding him in his last game? Twat.
-
Mark Halsey supports Bolton, and used to train with them (not sure if he still does?). Probably why he allowed fellow cloggers Sheff U and Albion to shaft us previously. Not sure why he favoured Arsenal against us though.
I wonder who Phil "Vidic" Dowd supports?
-
"Solihull official" Vic Callow, now retired, is a 'nose.
Mind you, it wouldn't matter how hard a ref would try to favour the rags, they'd still bollocks it up.
-
Not sure how accurate that is as I'm pretty sure Andre Mariner is a Villa fan. He lives in Brum (I've seen him in Sheldon a few times when I've been working over that way) and I think I'm right in saying he never seems to Ref our games..?
Mike Reid (retired Premier League Ref from the 90s) was a Villa fan. I once met him and he told me how he wasn't allowed to Ref Villa or Blues games! He also told me that he once sent off Partick Viera.
-

Hardly unique. Its not as if it'd give you bragging rights at the Referees Association annual dinner.
-
Andre Marriner was the man responsible for that ridiculous Shearer sending off against us years back.
-
The 'Ian Taylor' one?
-
Andrea Marriner is definitely a Villa fan, and a good guy too!
-
Dermot Gallagher is a Villan isn't he? Retired a while now though.

Is he the one from Banbury, if so I think he hated us so he could be a nose?

Yep, a Villa man through and through. Shame he was MP for Small Heath really.
-
I'm sure I read somewhere that Dermot Gallagher was a Villa fan, he admitted as much after he retired.
There was another one whose name escapes me, think he was from Brum and was refereeing around 2000. There was a feature about him in the old Claret and Blue magazine around the time of the Cup Final. Pretty certain he was one of the well known ones at the time, though not so well known that I can name him now, obv.

No, he was a Villa fan and weas taken to games as a kid by his dad. he told me as much. he also told me that we (Villa fans) keep giving him stick because of sending Oakes off at Blackburn (this was a few years back now). Didn't want to disappoint him that we didn't, and we didn't know it was him.
-
I suppose you have to declare who you support & if your seen to be showing them favoritism you'll be in trouble
-

Yes his Man Utd Tatoo might be a give away though
Just a foot note he may have been takrn by his dad to villa but he has got a Man Utd tatoo on his arm-fact

Nah that was Uriah Rennie.
Phil Dowd is a Port Vale fan apparently, lives up Congleton way.

Don't think he has reffed at villa since his cock up in the final. I'm ready to give him some stick when he finally does. I hate his fat face and his massive beer gut, the smug bastard.
-
Andre marriner can't ref a midlands game, under the ref rules. He has done a Coventry match(friendly I think) He sometimes does the job for our behind closed doors games.
Definitely a villa man.
-
I know that Dowd lives somewhere near Stoke. Not sure if he supports them, Port Vale or someone else though.
-
They have to declare an allegience to teams when they first go on to the football league, as i have mates who have officiated at that level and higher.
also they cant ref teams from where they come from.
Andre Marriner is def Villa, i did a game with him years ago, and he mentioned it when he saw my Villa boot bag. He is a great bloke, and its great to see him doing so well. Funnily enough, one of the managers at the game we did said he wouldnt go any higher ;D.
Dermot doesnt have a manure tattoo, as i have done a game with him before, and i didnt notice one.
-
I used to like the two Grahams, Poll and Barber, both from the same place Tring in Hertfordshire. Who did they support?
-

You would be referring to Mike Reid. He got into trouble after he was seen throwing his arm up in triumph following Liverpool scoring a goal. It was highly hilarious. When explaining, he said he was congratulating himself on playing advantage after a foul which subsequently lead directly to the goal. He went onto explain that it was 'Aston Villa for him all the way'.

Who was the bloke from County Durham who used to ref internationals in the 80s & 90s, tall bald fella, I think he was a headmaster?

However, when he moved into the House of Lords he chose the title Lord Howell of Aston. :)

George Courtney?

David Elleray. Complete tool who allowed Blues' 2nd goal in 'that' game.

And I think it was his family that owned the sweet shop opposite Handsworth Grammar in Grove Lane
