One of my 1st, and one of the brightest, Aston Villa memories, is Nigel Spink coming for the injuried Rimmer in the European Cup final making a fantastic debut which would bring him to become an Aston Villa legend.
Now he's the Sunderland goalkeepers' coach, but I can't acclimatize to see him like an opponent, he'll always be in my heart for his footballing and human qualities, hero of a time when men were men and footballers were footballers. . . . ;)
-
He seems to be doing an excellent job. Mignolet and Gordon have been among the best goal keepers in the league this season when they've played.
-
I feel the same when seeing a still 21 year-old looking Tony Daley on Wolve's bench.
-
Spink didn't make his Villa debut in the European Cup Final. He'd already played for the first team.
-
I meant that he made his debut in the EC. In absolute terms, Spink made his debut against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day 1979, and then would not play another first-team game for over two years.
-
It was hard work seeing Spinky in the Blues' dugout over the past few derbies. I'm glad he made the move to Sunderland!
-
Hopefully he will come out to help their back-up keeper warm-up at half-time and get a decent reception from the Holte End.
-
had a chat with spinky at the cross in oldswinford when he had done an evening with type thingy with dennis mortimer.
I asked hi about how he felt when super kev scored the winner against sha at the sty and he said he was overjoyed inside! it must be very difficult to be employed by evil when you have so much good inside you!

Everytime i see him on their bench,i think we must be able to find him a job at the Villa.
-
Does he still live in Walmley?
-
I also have fond memories of Nigel Spink the Legend it makes me think back to when he was our keeper he was a brilliant keeper is saves in the european cup final where brilliant it will be nice to see him back but i hope Gordon and Mignolet have a mare on wednesday Nige.
-
From someone on the other side of the World- I really hope Villa Park gives Spinksy a heroes welcome.
Without him we would not have THAT cup in a our cabinet.
-
I remember being in the villa end at roker park in about 1985 and spinky coming over to have a chat with us after warming up - a really nice bloke and a villa legend for that night in rotterdam- glad he's not at blues anymore and I hope his name rings loud tomorrow night- he deserves the plaudits!
-
I remember around the early 90's during a goal kick and with the holte chanting "Spinksy, give us a wave" he promptly kicked and waved at the same time, such a top bloke.
-
Spinky is a legen. I watched the 94 final sitting next to him behind the goal. When Savo hit the shot at the far end he was out of his seat as soon the ball left Savo's foot shouting a very slow scream gggggggggggggggggggggggol!

What was you and Spink doing watching the Serbian cup final?

I went to this game, my first visit to the City Ground. I travelled up from St Pancras without a match ticket, as you did in those days. I first queued at the away turnstiles but there were hundreds of Villa fans still trying to get in just before kick-off, so I went to the other end and stood with the home fans at the Trent End. On my way home, I stopped off in Leicester Square to watch Life of Brian, which had only recently been released.
-
Is he still trying to dislodge that bit of meat from his back teeth with his tongue?
I gave him a lift back from Redditch after he'd attended the opening of our Mita Copiers showroom back in the day. By the end of it he'd had a fair few white wines but he promised me he'd leave me tickets at reception for the game on the Sunday. I was certain he'd forget but went anyway and fair play to him he remembered. Which was nice because it was the 6-2 against Everton.
I hated seeing him in their dugout too!

Legend as usual, Frank.
And, knowing you, I'm quite sure that in Nottingham you'll have experimented the most ancien pub in the world, and that you'll have included it in your fantastic "Frank's guide to the world Pub": http://www.triptojerusalem.com/:

His spell at the dogshitters has tarnished his badge a bit
Let alone his bout with God in association with that Central TV presenter - cant recall name

Does he still live in Walmley?
His ex wife runs a hairdressers in the area. My sister used to go there. She used to see Spinky come in sometimes to pick his kids up.

He's bravely called for and caught any and all pies crossed into his direction.

Hope this is how you bump up threads, still a newbie. Anyway, the man himself is on Danny Baker's show tomorrow on 5, live playing the Sausage Sandwich game. It's usually from 9.30 onwards. I reckon he'll be red sauce, all the way as its claret under a bad light.
-
Being a Chelmsford man, red sauce all the way.
Which is just plain wrong.

Cheers for the heads-up, Jean. I won't be about to hear it tomorrow, but I'll listen to it in the week on ketchup. :)
-
I'll always remember the interview he gave after the final and he said "mom this the best day of my life" virtually in tears - Priceless moment. No "Ooh I can afford a new Porsche" bullshit it was all about the events of that night - Bless ya Spinksy.
-
That would be 97?
I thought he had his van driving business these days and wasn't involved in football any longer.
He'd probably do a great job bringing Gollini along.
-
Couple of years ago went to a forum in Erdington with Nigel and Brian Little. Was really sad to hear how Nigel walked away from the game he loved due to the primadonna's and over paid spoilt tossers that are modern footballers. He said that at training the acted like petulant kids if anyone dared critisised them.
Would be great for him to work for us again but I fear he is done with the modern game
-
He said on WM that he is too old at nearly 60 to be throwing himself around the training pitch. Also he has his courier business now.
