Probably the team I'd have picked, to be honest:

Friedel
Cuellar, Collins, Dunne, Clark
Young Petrov NRC Downing
Heskey Agbonlahor

Oh, where's Albrighton?

Team News: Friedel, Cuellar, Dunne, Collins, Clark; Downing, Reo-Coker, Petrov, Agbonlahor; Young, Heskey.

looks like 4 4 2

Anyone else watch via Villastreams? the website appears down which could scupper my viewing.

I'm wondering whether this could actually be a good thing...

Clark at left back? bit of a surprise, but Warnock needed dropping.

Now if we ship any goals today from a set piece I give up, 4 out n out CB's.

The kids need taking out the heat, let the experienced lads get us out the shit.

I agree he is just a kid after all and I fancy him more against Sunderland than Cashley and Boswinga

Hopefully the two wingers will stick on their natural sides.  Downing cannot play on the right hand side imho, other than that pretty happy with the line up.

Is this the first time houllier has been able to field this team? Since he arrived.

Clark could make the LB position his own if he is any good there.

So now it's down to motivation, I suppose. I think that's about as strong a team as we have, currently, and probably the best we can put out right now.

On the other hand, I can't help but think that a 4-5-1 might have been wise - but there we are! Come on Villa!

Cuellar at right back!

I actually think that this is a decent side, for consolidation at least. Glad to see the back of Warnock, he really has been poor. A bit worried about Dunne though. I hope he repays the managers faith.

I recall Cuellar at RB being the major area of blame after last seasons 7-1 maulling. I much prefer him in the middle and hope he doesn't get found out again today.

Is Warnock on the bench? One of the (many) rumours doing the rounds was that he would be left out altogether today and that Bridge would be coming in January...

Yeah Young was moaning about not getting a game, he played him and we got spanked

Cuellar was always good defensively at right back, its just his distribution thats the problem

I would have gone for a 4-5-1!

Can someone explain to me why he rushed Delph back to start him last week and he not been seen since after (I thought) a good game?

I am not certain Houllier has a clue really but anyway its not a bad side, still get overrun in midfield though, although we shouldn't concede from set pieces (famous last words).

Still, plenty of height for set-pieces.

That's what today is about. We can hope for but can't expect a win. A performance is the minimum requirement.

Agree with TV and Villadawg, much as it makes us sound like some little team...which is what I have never escaped from thinking about Chelsea despite all their success. Big one for me, a 'local derby' in effect as I am surrounded by the gloryhunting chavs round here. Possibly my most hated club if I was really pushed...

If we get tonked today, and I mean really tonked, 6,7,8 - god forbid - 9 or 10, could Ged really hang onto his job. I think it would become impossible for him to retain any sense of support from anyone connected to AVFC.

Today could be a very interesting day!

Lads we have won fuck all playing 451, against arsenal second half we were great playing 442.

We need to keep the ball in their half, this is easier with 2 strikers.

Actually, I thought when we were forced into 4-5-1 last season we played some of our best football under O'Neill.  Young especially looked good with him and Downing swapping flanks and causing some real problems.

Look, the BBC doesn't lie so lets get off Collins back eh.

Quote
1400: James Collins and Brad Friedel were both booked in the aftermath of that penalty decision - they felt Florent Malouda backed into Collins in the first place and TV replays appear to support their view. Lee Mason's card has just come out again, too, because he has booked Nigel Reo-Coker for a nothing challenge on Didier Drogba. A busy few minutes for the referee.

It'd be ace, he's got his own "wandering around area" as well.

I think if I were set free to behave as I wanted to at matches, to express how I felt about things, I would take every opportunity to pace around. If I still smoked and it were allowed, I'd smoke furiously while I did it.

At least we're trying to play football.  Our final ball in is horrible though, eg that from Mr Downing.

Sound of knives being sharpened.

Not playing too bad as I see it, not that that counts , for some, these players obviously aren't playing for the manager are they :)

Good first 20 mins. First time Collins is involved and it all goes to pot. THE BLOKE HAS GOT TO GO.
He did nothing wrong.

No, you're right, he definately didn't try a WWF move in the penalty area, and he definately is the Welsh Beckenbaur.
Malouda backed into Collins with him arm round him and dragged Collins over.

You are talking bollocks.

Cobblers. Collins jumped on him.
Actually you're right.

The ref's having a great game.

*rolls eyes*

That's the second thing you've got wrong today then. He's been card happy and should have booked a couple of Chelsea players too.

Much improved, good use of the ball, kept posssession nicely, looking firmer at the back.

I've a horrible feeling we'll end this match with 10 men or fewer and that'll do for us, but on the balance of the 45 minutes, we were much the better team and look infinitely better than we did at Eastlands.

Much, much better

Clark has been excellent, Downing woeful

If only we had the confidence to shoot straight...

Neither penalty was justified in my opinion, the ref just evened up his first terrible decision with an equally awful second one

Someone like to tell me how Essien and Ferreira have escaped yellow cards?

We won't have 11 men on the pitch by the end I fear...

As long as the returning players are really fully fit and don't collapse late on you could be right again.

Come on Villa, we're sticking it right up these cheating cockney c***s. The ref is an absolute disgrace, and he knows it. He's been piss poor and you can see it all over his face. He either stops being such a one-sided Chelsea scrote-muncher in the second half, letting the game to flow on, or he evens things up with a bit of justice meted out to them. Or he simply carries on persecuting us for not being one of the Sky Four and we end the game with 9 men.

Villa by far the better team, Collins did nothing wrong, he has booked 6 of our players, yet Essien has give away a penalty and a free kick and not been booked, truly shocking refereeing.

We have to change it or will go down to 10 with this ref.
Title: Re: Chelsea v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Martyn Smith on January 02, 2011, 02:22:53 PM
We've been good.

The referee has managed one of the worst performances I've ever seen.

Don't think Mason is getting the fouls wrong generally, it's just his card distribution is so biased. If we've merited 6 yellows then Chelsea have deserved 4 at least...
Title: Re: Chelsea v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: MonsXI on January 02, 2011, 02:22:58 PM
We will lose this because of the ref i cannot believe his bias towards them he's not even hiding it. How can Essien give away a pen with a lunge in the box and a blatant non attempt to go for the ball against Ash yet still not receive a card? Dunne's reaction after the pen got him a yellow why not Terry?

Total utter incompetent refereeing, I doubt we will end the game with 11 players which will probably in turn cost us. If he gets punished after the game for a poor performance(which I doubt he will) he loses nothing.

Very impressive first half. Both were penalties. Collins still a liability, but the other 10 all looked good, some in different positions to their usual. Cause for optimism. Chelsea not great, but still better than plenty of teams we still have to play.

I really am reluctant to have too much of a go at refs as a rule, but this is an astonishingly poor performance, really shit.

As for us though, full marks! Great effort and energy, strong performances from Clark, Young and Heskey, and especially from NRC and Dunne. I have to say, I didn't think we'd see Dunne back, but he has been very good today and, thankfully, he looks about a stone lighter!

Great stuff, and if we can keep this up, we might even win it! Stranger things have happened!

Absolutely what I was thinking whilst watching.

We've been good.

The referee has managed one of the worst performances I've ever seen.

Don't think Mason is getting the fouls wrong generally, it's just his card distribution is so biased. If we've merited 6 yellows then Chelsea have deserved 4 at least...
The Clark, Reo-Coker, Petrov and Gabby fouls were all fouls but only the Petrov and Gabby ones were bookings.

Whereas they should have Essien and Ferreira booked as well.

Good first half, shocking ref thought. A little consitency please. As much as I rate the kids, our possesion in midfield is much improved with some fist teamers in there. Reo-cokers distribution has been good. Keep it up!

Cue the red cards in the second half to turn the game around for chelsea.

Bright opening half.

Soft penalty to them, but you half expect that. Looked messy from Collins but if that was at VP against Wigan or Bolton it wouldn't have been given.

Got our way back into it when in previous matches we've gone to pieces after conceding one. Part of that is down to how Chelsea have played, they haven't been at the races and look nervous.

We haven't really exploited that, some poor decision making in decent positions.

But concerning that we've already got 6 booked, we need to watch that as this doughnut will look to send one of ours off given a chance. We've done well eleven v eleven, I'm not sure I'd fancy our odds with ten or less.

ease up on the ref lads - all our yellows have been deserved and I thought Ashley Young went in nice and high on Cole too. Essien certainly deserved one. Could never understand people claiming Essien is world class as an aside he is having some stinker today. anyway we could have dropped the heads losing the goal like that. It was stupid by Collins but a bit soft. Our equaliser was thoroughly deserved. We are all over Chelsea on set pieces. Dunne and Clark should have scored already. Just need Ashley Young who has been superb to stop playing them short. Just keep whistling them in and we will score again. We have a giant of a team today and the likes of Ferreira are being murdered in the air.

Ive been impressed with Petrov and Reo Coker today, they are well on top in midfield. Gabby has worked hard protecting Clark on the left but Id argue Clark hasnt even required protection as he has dealt with Anelka superbly thus far. Sure our tactics are a bit prehistoric but they are paying dividends so keep it up. Downing has been on the ball a lot but hasnt used it well in dangerous positions. Dunne has been excellent so far, good decision to bring him back and drop Warnock I must say. Cuellar has worried me a bit. He should have stepped out twice for offside but didnt and it took Dunne getting back to save a goal.

Just hope we can push on in the second half and not adopt a what we have we hold attitude. Chelsea have been awful thus far and there for the taking today. With six yellows a lot of players will have to be careful in the second half. I certainly expect Delph to come in for probably Petrov after an hour or so. Wouldnt mind Gabby up top for a bit and play Young on the left. Overall much much better. The team is organised, playing with purpose and spirit. Just need to make sure not to let this opportunity slip.

1st half is well perform. All the player work well except poor penalty by Referee and many yellow card.

Gabby is very quite so he need to make it different. We need old Gabby to win this game.

They were fouling us all over the pitch to be fair, and yes one or two extra bookings could easily have gone their way. Gabby and Petrov's were proper kick 'em in the air challenges, but i'm not complaining as long as they don't do anything stupid second half.

I can see why Downing is playing on the right as Cole is very strong on his favoured side. If Downing's distribution was better it would be being proved as a good tactical decision to play him out there. Maybe thrown Albrighton on for the last 15 if we have a chance to win this.

Well this is better. That Phil Mitchell looking twat concerns me though. He cant wait to send somebody off. There have been some clumsy and stupid tackles to be fair but he's showing cards for anything and has set his stall out. Well, if you're in a Villa shirt anyway.
Why wasnt Essien booked for giving the pen away by the way? It was one of the worst tackles in that half.

We're going to have to watch the tackles now and that will hinder us a bit.
Ancelotti will send them out looking for everyhing. They'll be going down like tupenny whores.

I think the Referee got both Penaltys right and our bookings spot on.  Petrov may have been slightly lucky to get away with Yellow.

Essien should have been booked though and probably Terry.

Overall performance was a lot better.  Chelsea have been pretty woeful in fairness, but we have kept the ball reasonably well and have been organised. (well apart from Collins ridiculous challenge to give away the penalty obviously).

Keep our discipline for the second half and provided Chelsea can't rediscover any of their better form, we have a chance.

Seeking written permission from Mason prior to going in for a tackle is going to take much of the fight from Villa.  A half hearted challenge will lead to a goal at some point soon.

It looked like a fairly simple defensive header he had to make, to be honest, but you;re right - I think they'd have scored at some point regardless, so I'm not singling him out for us not getting three pints, just for that goal, if that makes sense.

I feel fucking sick. Of all players to score the winner, in a game when they've been a shower of shite, it had to be John "I'm a cock" Terry. Anyone else but him and I could just about stomach it, but why John "I'm a cock" Terry!

Daylight robbery. Football is shit. We're shit. 80 minutes and we shut off.

Feel sorry for Big Brad because he's been superb today.

So, and this is really really harsh I know, but how often have teams scored against us as a result of Albrighton giving the ball away/giving a free kick away? It seems like a lot, but probably my mind playing tricks on me.

You know what, yeah may have lost, or be losing, but there is a lot to take from it, and Sunderland on Wed is ahgue test to take into it.

Can't we just relegate ourselves now and be done with it, and give all our remaining matches away as byes?  It'd be far less painful that way.
