To be honest Matt, I've been thinking the same thing for a few matches. I like a sing song myself but just can't muster any enthusiasm for it at the moment.

I understand that we ain't got much 2 shout About but at the game yest it seemed the fans didn't try and lift the players I was a season ticket holder in holte for 7 years and I'm a steward in the away section now and every set of fans that come take the piss bout how quiet fans are

Perhaps reflecting what some of the players are doing - 'can't be arsed'

Even the away support has dropped in numbers and it's vocal backing.....
we need a leader, talisman, someone to believe in........... perhaps the
manager will find that person in January ?

Failing that, and I fear things will get worse before we turn the corner
a 'tonking' by Citeh / Chelsea will maybe create a them & us seige
mentality that would galvanise the support, when the going gets tough etc,
because if we the fans give up then the writing is on the wall, and I for one
don't relish following us in the Championship -

Mind you, having said that, thousands of us had memorable days in
the old Third Division way back when, Andy Lochhead & Chico Hamilton
were the fans' favourites, and nobody could accuse us of being a quiet
lot then (ah fond memories) -

It is the worst vocal support I can remember for many a year at VP.

Apathy reigns throughout at the moment.

They're all asleep, or quietly crying into their sleeves, or eyeing the rafters for the perfect hanging spot. Can't say I blame em really!

Hat, coat, runs away!  ;D

To be fair, we probably say the same at the majority of grounds we go to too.

When i've been to Everton, Blackburn, Bolton, Utd and even Blues, Albion and Wolves, we've outsung the home support.

I think that's just the way it is now. Just that we seem to be quiter than usual this year.

We don't have the best away following in the Premiership. I also don't think we can be considered one of the poorest at home when you take into account the likes of Blackburn, Bolton, Wigan, Blues etc...

Probably not in terms of numbers but definitely one of the best away followings vocally.

I think football fans are more respectable these days.   My friends around me on the Holte spend a great deal of the time during matches talking about cars and holidays.   Two or three of them talked on and off through the whole Spurs game about the cricket.

It is the march of progress.   The Paul McGrath song whilst being in very bad taste can throw up some amusing three syllable punch lines "empty seats", "shit support" and "won fuck all" being typical.   As football songs go it is a complicated build up and rarely gets sung at really top volume.

Likewise how can young fans be lifted to burst a blood vessel with a song about "Spinky and Birchy and Alan McInally"?   You could be singing about the family of Ethelred the Unready as far as they know.

In the forties and fifties when a working man earned twenty quid a week on the track at Longbridge admission to the Holte was two bob (10p) and a pint of Ansells mild ale before the game was one and a tanner (8p).

Being a football fan was much more basic in those days.   The noise was deafening.   It was a visceral rumble which rose to ear splitting roaring with the ebb and flow of the game and could be heard in the city centre.   When Dennis Law stamped on Alan Deakin's face I thought my ears would burst with the roar which went up from the crowd.

Like so many things these days the singing and chanting and vocal support at football matches is expected to be done on cue and to a set of rules, cheer led by somebody on the public address system telling us what to do.   When I hear all those manic announcements about getting behind the lads in claret and blue and getting those three points I join in the cars and holidays conversation.

Quiet is one thing, but our song repertoire is gash.  Embarrassing even.

Quiet is one thing, but our song repertoire is gash.  Embarrassing even.

Yesterday I tried to start a sixteenth-century madrigal composed by John Farmer.

Fair Phyllis I saw sitting all alone
Feeding her flock near to the mountain side.
The shepherds knew not,
they knew not whither she was gone,
But after her lover Amyntas hied,
Up and down he wandered
whilst she was missing;
When he found her,
O then they fell a-kissing.

No bastard joined in.

Your problem Damon is that although a lovely ditty, it doesn't contain any reference to Blues, defacating, Paul McGrath, drinking or even empty seats.  Perhaps a re-think may work if you can shoe horn some (or all) of these in?

To be honest, I get involved less and less with the singing these days as we have such a crap collection of songs.

I don't quite know whats happened around the club at the moment but it feels to me as we've got the collective hump about being dumped by our girlfriend and we can't quite let it go and move on.

What we need is Leadership, what we're getting is Management........

Try this:

Fair Phyllis I saw shitting all alone
Feeding her flock near to the Holte End side.
The Villa Army knew not,
they knew not whither she was gone,
But after her love of the Villa hied,
Up and down we wandered
whilst she was missing;
When we found her,
O then they fell a-kicking.

Excellent. The English madrigal tradition was the source of the phrase `fa-la-la', so we'd need to chuck in a few of those.

fa-la-la, my liege, fa-la-la

Don't think we're particularly worse than many of the other supposed big clubs when it comes to home atmosphere TBH.

Most of them only sing when they're winning and we haven't been doing much of that this season.

For clubs like Blackpool and even Stoke, it's still an adventure for them. The novelty hasn't worn off.

I'm normally in Holte Upper but was in trinity for spurs, inflicting his second game on my nephew (Arsenal was his first, poor lad) and from where I was the SPurs fans were singing for most of the game. Only heard the Holte a couple of times but then again there isn't much to shout about at the moment.

It was very quiet against Spurs. Even when we pulled one back with 9 minutes left people were leaving in droves and not bothering to urge us on to an equaliser.

I cant understand people leaving after we have got one back, but most times we never ever look like scoring..

There is an awful sense of doom and gloom around the place. The players need to come out all guns blazing trying to get the fans onside in the first ten minutes of games.

We have been quiet of late, but i think we need to roar the team on get behind them so they can see we are all together that makes a big difference.

The reason it's quiet is because we are sick of watching over paid prima donas put a half hearted shift in and collect £1000s each week. The fans may have pride and passion but that soon wears off along with our patience.
I have had enough of late like many others. Football can shove it.
Title: Re: Why are our fans so quiet
Post by: austin on December 28, 2010, 07:57:35 PM
Lots of good explanations why we are so quiet but I think it also has something to do with the type of support we attract nowadays. We have a lot of middle class and transient support who between them show less passion for  the club and the game as those of us who come from working class  places like kingstanding and erdington. Lots of families and kids from those neighbourhoods simply cant afford to go the game on a regular basis and each year our support from these areas that used to be the holte ends lifeblood is drifting away. The noise in the ground has diminished at the same rate in my opinion.

I was at the Doncaster Cup replay last season (the season before?- where Percy didn't recognise me...) and I spent ages trying to find one. One by Aston train station charged £1.75 or something, in the Ads was broken, nothing around Villa and I had no money to get refreshments for my nephew in - 10C. He shivered throughout a hot drinkless 2nd half.

Your nephew nearly got hypothermia because you were too tight to pay £1.75 to get money out for his hot chocolate?
For shame.
