Looks like we may have the big man for another season.  Also, for once Houllier is saying the right things

Good news but we need to sign a new keeper, Brad will be a great reserve keeper next season.

Friedel may well be good enouigh to be first choice next season - he is now so there's every chance it will stay that way.  The question is is Guzan good enough to take over?

From the article:

Meanwhile, the Villa midfield duo of skipper Stiliyan Petrov and Fabian Delph are making rapid progress after lengthy injury lay-offs with ankle and knee setbacks respectively.

There is an outside chance the pair could even be named among the substitutes for the Boxing Day clash with Tottenham at Villa Park.

Good news indeed!

We need a new keeper in January in my opinion, Brad has been great for us but we need a better keeper asap.

Far more pressing needs than a new keeper.

Shay Given would be my choice. He may be 35 but he's still a very good goalkeeper and bearing in mind how long Brad's managed to play for, we'd get at least good 4 seasons out of him.

Would plump for Given instead of Brad no problem but not as well as Brad. Wonder if Guzan will be on his bike as well then?

As an aside, great to see Delph back fit.

Couple of decent results, couple of decent signings and with the kids, the future looks promising once more...

Westwood for me, let him fight it out with Brd Snr for first team choice. I've said it before, to me Brad Jnr has something of the Enkelman's a about him.  Possibly needs to go out on loan to see if he is up to it.

i agree that we need to replace both brads - given and westwood please! Not sure I would say bead being here next year would be good news- he is showing signs this season that time has caught up with him and will only get worse.

I think Weidenfeller on a free in the Summer. Sign a pre-contract in Jan and it gives us the money to spend in other positions.

Good number 2 but if he's in goal next year i'll be dissappointed

If Big Brad does stay then to me it says we're signing a top keeper.  40 or not it would still take a great player to push him to number 2.

Sorry I don't see this as particularly good news.  Brad has been excellent in some games but piss poor in others.  His good games are getting fewer and further between for me.  He's starting to look increasingly flat-flooted, lacking in agility and vulnerable on crosses. I think his uncertainty is part of our problem at defending set-pieces and  I don't think he should be our no. 1 if we can find a replacement.  Happy to have him as backup as I don't think Guzan is good enough.

Paul Robinson would be my choice if we are going in for an English based keeper.

Misleading title, not backed up by the quotes. We need to move on from Friedel, a great back up keeper if he wants to stick arounf. We should go for Given

I want a new goalkeeper around 27 rather than 35 (Givens) but we doesn't need to rush to buy one. If the German is available on free and is good enough for long term and we can sign him up.

I can't see why anyone would want to spend £4-5 million on Given when money is going to be tight. If we can pick up the best performing keeper in Germany who is 7 years younger for nowt.

I don't necessarily take that as good news, he's declining and on a massive wage.

He's still a good keeper, but his lacks athleticism and he's suddenly gone dodgy on crosses.

Yeh we can do worse, but we could do alot better too.

I wouldn't give up on Guzan yet, he's had some very good games for us in the cups yet seems to havwebenn permanently written off due to two dodgy games against Blackburn.

I'd loan him to a prem club like Bolton have done with Al Habsi who's been brilliant for Wigan.

As for who to get in, Westwood looks fantastic for Coventry, Shaw Given should be an option aswell.

Friedel has been good for us but towards end of last season you could see he wasn't going to cut it much longer and I'm afraid guzan isn't the answer. I would love given even for a couple of seasons
