Dunne dropped! He's on the bench, Cuellar, Lichaj, Bannan, heskey and Ash come in for Dunne, Young, Clark, Gabby and Ireland (who isn't in the squad)

Welcome back carlos- is luke on the bench? Was hoping he would drop warnock too and play luke at left back, pity gabby is Ill again but let's hope heskey stays fit- rumour of reo- coker maybe making the bench, is that correct?

Luke is injured, NRC on the bench.
Friedel, Lichaj, Collins, Cuellar, Warnock, Bannan, Hogg, Albrighton, Downing, Ash (c), Heskey
Bench- Dunne, Carew, Guzan, Pires, Herd, Delfouneso, Reo-Coker.

No Odemwinge for them

Playing Cuellar instead of Dunne is a good move, especially as I think it will show how much Collins has been doing lately. If he only has to worry about his job, he'll be a lot better.

My main hope is that Cueller can maintain his good form from earlier in the season. He shouldn't have been dropped at all, so I'm hoping he's mentally right. Because if he starts dropping clangers, we could be in trouble. If he does, I'd put it squarely on how Houllier has managed that situation. After how Carlos performed against Wolves, it's downright bizarre for him to get dropped.

I like that team though. Glad BB is back. Heskey back means that this system might work a bit better, just as long as Emule is fit enough.

I did think we'd get turned over today, but I'm changing my mind now. Hopefully Carlos can steady the ship. Lichaj is good going forward and surely can't defend worse than Luke Young has done in recent weeks.

Ash as captain, I am hoping will make him up his game. The skipper factor can often have a positive effect on players, and boost their games a bit more. When fat Barry was made skipper, his overall game seemed to go up by another 10%. Right now we need Ash delivering to the best of his ability.

Dont think Dunne can have any complaints. Is Habib Beye injured?

Thought Ireland had a decent enough second half against Liverpool though maybe he is 'ill' again. Cant see Heskey going too well as a lone centre forward and our midfield is as weak as piss.

If we lose today, he will make it back into the side, do fuck all, get dropped then we lose and he returns to the side etc etc etc. It's like groundhog day.

Houllier wants us to play football. It's not really working. West Brom pass it better than us, and despite their squad, they're 5 points better off (for now).

We need a new game plan. Stick 2 up front, and get the wingers in the game more.

I wonder how fit  Nigel is. We could do with him on alongside Hogg. A system like this I think you need two solid CM's, not just one youngster. Don't think we can carry wee Barry, unless we drop one of our 3 attacking midfielders.

Need to see more from Cashley. He's been sloppy with his runs (eeeuuuggh) too, offside too often.

If he doesn't improve he needs dropping imo. No one should be undroppable and I'm glad Dunne has been shown that, because Carlos is doing well.

He went down injured in the first minute today, gives the ball away constantly, turns him back on every shot. Unable to deal with a player running at him. A very poor player

Must play compliments to Cuellar he's covered for Lichaj  when he makes mistakes but overall Lichaj's don't reasonably well. Hogg really needs to learn one touch football! I think it would make him a much better player in certain instances.

If not for Albrighton and Downing this season we'd be absolutely fooked this season. I think we'd be sandwiched in the W's somewhere down in the league table.

Hopefully we hold onto this lead and we can boost up to middish table.

So the players hate the ball, Ash is far too forward all the time leaving the midfield exposed, Collins and Warnock especially keep on diving in. Plus points, Downing is good as usual and Heskey is causing them physical problems, but for goodness' sake why are we hoofing it? We're a goal up, at bloody home, and we either can't or don't want to keep the ball properly. Bloody hell.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v The Throstles Match Thread
Post by: supertom on December 11, 2010, 03:54:20 PM
Well...

Not great. But, good team spirit. Players are covering for teammates, and especially with youngsters, that's gonna be needed because of mistakes.

Downing and Albrighton have been good.

Heskus is leading the line well. Boy have we missed him.

We're looking fairly solid on the right of defence thanks to Cueller (thank fuck he's back, solid and no messing about) and Lichaj. Lichaj is quite aggressive, he'll always go for a tackle of push tight, so he's gonna get caught out a few times, but the key is, he's winning most of his battles and he's got Cueller or Hogg covering him. Carlos reads the game very well, whereas in previous games, Luke Young, who's been getting mullered, has not been covered by Collins.

Negatives- Barry Bannan is offering no help to Hogg and we're getting overrun in CM. That's not Barry's fault, it's a tactical mis-fire. If Nigel is fit enough for one half, get him in alongside Hogg. We've enough attacking flair with the wide men and Ash to make things happen. Barry has been invisible mostly.

Ash Young has been non-existent. I'd get him off and put on a 2nd striker. Probably the Fonz, although they're back line looks like it could be bullied. Maybe Carew will have some joy playing with Heskey, as it means he'll not have to work hard.

Warnock and Collins looks decidedly shaky, Warnock especially. He's a liability. I'm pretty sure he doesn't like Houlllier. Thing is, we know he's capable enough on his day, because first half of last season he was excellent. He's not a great player by any stretch, but he's certainly not this bad.

Because trying to play a keep-ball type of game has seen us lose more or less every game.

Can't say I'm unhappy about that.
The lads aren't hiding, they're backing each other up, covering for each other....so much better than the shit thrown up against Liverpool.

Warnock, though...90% misplaced hoof, I'd say. And Tchoyi is growing in confidence against him. I'm pretty sure Di Metteo will be giving them instructions to go at him in the 2nd half.

I strongly disagree, OTL. The reasons we lose those games are more to do with the continual defensive errors by the back four, not the keep the ball game. We're ahead, but rather by luck than by judgement, and if we keep giving West Brom the ball we will be punished sooner or later.

Well...

What Supertom said.

Tom, I think Barry's been better going forward than Ash, who has been leaving the midfield two exposed by his seeming need to stand next to the goal all the time, which is infuriating. If Nige can play, I'd replace Ash.

The first 15 minutes will be massive. They'll come at us with everything, and they know the left side is the weak link in our set up. We have to account for that in our HT planning. If we can get to a point in the game where we've taking out much of their sting, we may be able to bring NRC on, shore up the midfield and grab a cheeky second. Right now I'll take our next goal coming off of 14 deflections if it means a win.

There's hardly a single word I'd disagree with there. Except Bannan being 'invisible'. Transparent maybe, but not quite invisible. I'd give him another 15 mins then, if he's not got his creative hat on, bring out the Nige.

Think we have been pretty poor to be honest. Leading totally against the run of play. Collins started very poorly but seems to have settled a bit. Cuellar has been excellent. His pace has covered for a couple of Lichaj's mistakes. Think Lichaj has been a mixed bag. Some great tackles but some missed ones too. Think if he gets a yellow card he could really struggle. Warnock I wont even go there. Think Hogg and particularly Bannan are struggling badly in midfield. Bannan has been anonymous. Great play by Albrighton for the goal and Downing did well to follow it up. That is all we have had though. Our midfield are unable to get Ashley Young into the game and we are struggling. Heskey has worked hard and held it up pretty well without ever looking like a goal threat. He actually is a decent man for defending set plays. Seems like only him and the two centre halves are our only decent players in the air.

West Brom are very dangerous down the flanks but Fortune isnt much of a player up front.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v The Throstles Match Thread
Post by: supertom on December 11, 2010, 04:03:41 PM
I think the major problem for Barry is, that we're on the back foot mostly and as part of a central 2, his job is mostly defensive right now. That's in as much where he's been invisible.

Going forward we have Ash, Stewie and Downing. I don't see why we really need that 4th offensive minded midfielder really.

I agree with Monty though, If anyone of those 4 needs dropping, it's Ash first.

But personally I'd take off Ash and Bannan, and bring on Nige and Fonzy, and switch to two up top. It'll still be 4-4-1-1 pretty much because Heskey plays pretty deep. I really don't rate Ashley as the advanced striker either. I don't rate him in the centre at all actually. He does need a kick up the ass at the moment, that's for sure.

Finally a win. On the plus side, there was much more of a spirit about the side today. Players supporting their team mates when in trouble, good tackling. Lets be honest after the shambles at Anfield anything would be an improvement but I thought we deserved winners.

Friedel 5 - Poor flap at one cross. To be fair didnt have much to do but he is a liability in the air.
Lichaj 6 - obviously a good athlete this kid and strong. Some great tackles but good few novicey mistakes aswell. Needs not to dive in every time as its a risky game to play and Cuellar had to cover for him a good bit but a solid debut.
Collins 4 - awful start, improved in the second half but was stuck to the ground for their goal too. Dont think he looks fully fit and Dunne may well come back in
Cuellar 8 - our best player by a distance I thought. Bad mistake at the end but anticipated very well. Some great tackling and covering across the defence
Warnock 4 - hopeless in first half. Better in second but I really dont rate him as a footballer.
Albrighton 7 - quiet generally but delivered the two assists for the goals today. Delicious crosser of the ball.
Hogg 5 - Very limited in possession but competed pretty well I thought.
Bannan 3 - totally anonymous. Not suited to 442 and was completely overrun today.
Downing 7 - tidy in possession, never a player that will excite too much but did well for the goal.
Young 7 - poor in first half but thought he showed good leadership in the second and was key to us winning the game. Drew free kicks, corners and yellow cards. His crossing seems to have deserted him though.
Heskey 6 - put in a good shift in the first half but struggled badly in the second. Was in the right place for the goal

Subs - Reo Coker added some presence to the midfield but was stupid for the goal leaving the post, the other two hardly got a touch.

I think we were lucky that Di Matteo froze on the sideline for West Brom today. Bringing on subs in the 88th minute was bizarre they should have been on a lot earlier. Their widemen were very good in the first half but they couldnt get them into the game in the second. I felt Dorrans had a good game in midfield but Fortune was very poor up front. They looked a very good team in the first half but didnt seem to fancy it all that much until too late in the second half. We were there for the taking today really but I felt they accepted their fate from a long way out.
