2-2. I feel we were very unlucky last night, I have grave concerns about our defence though. Dunne and Collins seems to have become somewhat of a liabilty but for some reason I believe we will get something.

I'm intrigued to see what happens when Houllier has a full pre season, he's had a very tough start with injuries so I'm finding it hard to pick a fault with him.

I can see a turgid draw, which under normal circumstances wouldn't be bad up there. Its just disappointing how this season doesn't actually seem to have begun.

We could do with a months worth of snow to give us time to re-group.

Not really looking forward to this as it means it's another fixture that doesn't go in our favour and if we lose we'll be slipping again. Anything but a loss will feel like a bonus right now... lets just hope the defence can contain Torres.

Clampy, that team is probably the last one I'd have picked at the start of teh season but it's probably our best chance of getting something although I'd swap Gabby and Ireland even though Agbonlahor can do a job on the wing.  Are you keeping Ireland out of the way up top perchance?

Going by the size of him, he'd take out the right back at the same time.

2-0 loss. Pretty football, 50-50 possession. 1st goal 44 mins, 2nd between 80-90mins. GH to look cold, ill and clueless on bench.

The referee is Phil Dowd (Staffordshire)

It will be his first Villa game since the Carling Cup final, and his well-publicised decision to not send off Vidic. No surprises we have him away - usual precedure after a controversial decision.

His assistants are McDonough (chequered flag) and Turner (yellow flag), while Mark Halsey is 4th official.

3-0 to them.  No chance of us winning up there at the moment.  It may be a while til we are ready to compete at places like Anfield again.  Hope he doesn't rush half fit players back for this one as the WBA game is a real 6 pointer and one we have a realistic chance of winning.

3-1 to them, they'll take the lead around the 20 minute mark, bag a 2nd on 44, Gabby will pull one back on 76, alot of pressure from us before they hit us on the break in injury time, its all a bit predictable of late

Friedel
Beye, Collins, Cuellar, L Young
Ireland, Hogg, Clark, Downing
Gabby, Fonz

Liverpool are a poor side and in normal circumstances we would be looking forward to this game to turn them over.

Cant see anything but a defeat to a late Liverpool goal unfortunately.

Gabby is not an option in midfield but he'll probably play on the left, Downing on the right and Ireland disappeared in a hole next to a statue of Carew. Warnock to spend 5 mins rolling around the ground 'in agony', Dunne and Collins to continue to struggle and Brad Friedel to move across the goal in slow motion for Kyriagokos late header.

Experience has nothing to do with it.

Dunne is shockingly shite.
Overwieght
Unfit
Out of form
And costing us goals every bloody game.

If our season has proved anything it's that we can count on our young lads, shame we can't on our "experienced" players.

This is a game we used to look foward too, now we're it's not a game we're looking foward too despite how bad Liverpool are these days. Under the circumstances a point would be pretty big for us just to try and get kick started again putting more belief back into the team. It's now getting to the stage where the longer we don't win, the more we put ourselves in danger of slipping down further and further making it look pretty worrying. I'm still banging my head over the United and Fulham results, I know I should get over it but it's so annoying.

1-0 to the Redscouse.

We'll boss the game for long periods, nice pretty patterns in non threatening areas and even have a few chances.

But then Podge will lose whoever he's meant to be marking or do something really daft to gift the bindippers a goal in the last 10 minutes. If he doesn't someone else will.

I expect us to perform well and give it a go, we'll lose 2-0.

If we had Petrov or NRC we'd win this game, even if they had Gerrard and everyone, we'd win with either of those fit to play in deep midfield with Clark, allowing us to play Bannan and Ireland/Pires further forward. Ah well.

Bannan is doubtful. You're surely not suggesting going to Anfield and playing 4-4-2 there, Ace? Considering as well that to play that the very least you need is a combative, tight midfield without too much width (Pires, Downing and Ireland don't fulfil that requirement), and two strikers who work harder than a Nike-employed child (Carew is not that).

How lightweight is that midfield? The thought of Pires starting scares me.

Oh right. That's because they don't understand that Young isn't a striker I suppose. It must be difficult for the poor lambs to keep up with the tactical nuances of the little provincial teams like us. Easier for them to pidgeonhole us into a stereotypical formation than to give any actual thought to how we'll play.

I'd forgotten Ash was suspended. Bannan doubtful too, so the bones get barer and barer...

I'd go with this. It's a bit of a mish-mash but then that's what we're down to. I'm going to assume Bannan is out, but that Cuellar is fit enough. If not, obviously replace him with Dunne (sigh). Heskey fit enough for the bench, not to start.

                      Friedel

Young        Cuellar     Collins     Warnock

         Ireland      Hogg       Clark

         Agbonlahor  Delfouneso    Downing

Subs: Guzan, Dunne, Lichaj, Herd, Pires, Carew, Heskey

It's a narrow midfield three, verging on Hogg and Clark playing deeper and screening the back four with Ireland just in front. Gabby reprises his wide right/right sided striker of two seasons ago, Downing wide left. Both have to be up and down, tracking back when needed. Fonz gets the centre forward nod over Carew (doesn't have the legs/heart for this role anymore IMO) and Heskey (not fit enough to start).

What about something a bit out of left field/desperate?

...............................Friedel

Lichaj..........Cuellar.............Collins.........Young

................Hogg........Clark......Warnock

.......Ireland.................................Downing

...........................Agbonlahor

I would however play 4-4-2 like so...

.............................Friedel

Young...........Collins.........Cuellar..........Warnock

.....................Hogg...........Clark
Ireland...............................................Downing

..............Agbonlahor........Delfouneso

Carew does not deserve a start and Fonz does. If Bannan makes it, he plays instead of Hogg and we play a fluid system with Ireland tucking in and Downing getting forward more and maybe Gabby dropping off wide right when needed.

The lop-sided 4-4-2 occurred to me as well, Maz, but definitely with Bannan starting if he's fit. If not, I imagine Ireland would come inside and Gabby drop wide every now and again.

I like the look of Merv's team - makes the best use of what remains of our depleted squad.

Maz's second line up for me, I do like Gabby through the middle though, so on occassions I'd rather it was Fonz dropping wide right, like he did effectively at home to Blackburn in the league cup, he also has a trick up his sleeve to do a full back, Gab doesn't really for me.  Gab's pace right through the middle should trouble Skrtel and Kyrgiakos who aren't great.  Centre mid will be even weaker without Barry.  If we had NRC and Stan in there i might fancy us.

Surprised houllier hasn't tried warnock in midfield as many Blackburn fans reckon that's his best position- I don't expect anything tonight to be honest and watching west brom play a lovely passing game yesterday leaves me less than hopeful on Saturday- we need reo - coker and heskey back asap!

No Gerrard or Carragher for them, Sotoris Carcrash is playing so we'll get chances.

A point will do me. 1-1.

I reckon Carcrash will score against us and our set piece defending.

Anyway, my side would be:

Friedel

Lichaj      Cuellar    Collins   LYoung

Hogg      Clark

Delfouneso   Ireland   Downing

Gabby

I expect to see Carew, Warnock and Dunne play however.

If Bannan is out I'd be tempted to play Warnock in midfield.

Carlos is fit again, isn't he?

If so, I'd look at

-------------------------------Friedel--------------------------------------
Cuellar---------------Collins-----------Dunne------------L.Young-----
Ireland--------------Hogg-------------Clark--------------Warnock-----
----------------------------Downing----------------------------------------
------------------------------Gabby-----------------------------------------

I think we might get a right hammering tonight, especially if Bannan is out. Liverpool are crap, but we are worse!!

4 - 0.  :(

The only thing keeping me going is that I was expecting a right hammering there last season, but with Beye, Shorey and Sidwell in the team, we twatted them 3-1.

So, 3-1 to us.  Agbonlahor (2) and Ireland.

Otherwise the sight of Houllier waving at the Kop with misty eyes might tip me over the edge.

Ireland/Hogg/Clark (a central defender) as our midfield - my spidey sense in tingling - and not in a good way.

Tragically think the only way we'll get anything out of this is if the fa changes the points rules and awards some for shots on target - hold on that's not going to work for us - how about points for every stone overweight you're captain is, or points for every £million wiped off Irelands resale value after he "weaves his magic".

In the need to laugh or will cry corner at the mo - roll on Jan!

I apologise if this has already been covered... but is Cuellar fit to play tonight? I checked phyisoroom.com and he's not on our injury list, he was on the bench against small heath, hopefully he makes his comeback tonight.
