I wouldn't have been sure it was going to go England's way regardless of whether or not last night's scenes had occurred.

I started the day thinking it would go to Spain/Portugal, but now I have a feeling it'll be Russia.

Both countries who will not give a fuck about worker's rights, tax and all the other unsavoury stuff.

I honestly could not give a toss about England getting it.

2026 will be the turn of a continent that hasn't had it 'recently' which would rule out Europe, Asia, and Africa.

I'd love to know what Russia did to get the vote, as there are so many holes in their proposal, especially regarding transport. I'd imagine the State-sponsored mob have been very busy over the last year or so and not just with bribes. The more I read about modern day Russia, the more I fail to understand how they were even a candidate for 2018.

Who else were competing with Qatar for 2022? How did a country of less than 2 million land the world cup? It would be like Wales, the West Mids or Perth, W.A. getting it, crazy.

Not even that.

Qatar - population 1.6m, which is half the population of the West Midlands conurbation.

In Qatar in June/July time it's the hottest place in the world! The temperatures are around 55 degrees!

I would imagine the rightwing press (Sun/The Mail) are already blaming the BBC and will call for the licence fee to be abolished and the BBC broken up.

With the time difference, the games will no doubt be played at midnight local time to appeal to European television.

It's not so much annoying that England didn't get it, it is the hypocrisy I don't like.

Like FIFA and their anti racism campaigns giving the world cup to a country where racism in football is endemic. It is similar to the hypocrisy in UEFA fining teams like Real Madrid 10,000 euros for racist chanting.

Then there's pretending there is any real benefit in giving it to a tiny oil rich gulf state.

Well that would work, is Qatar as muslim country, that could be interesting for all the beer sponsors FIFA love?

Wembley is hosting the biggest football match in the world in May. International football is increasingly irrelevant and of a standard below the best club competitions in the world.

Russia you can just about understand but Quatar is a joke. It should at least go to a country that has a chance of qualifying on merit.

They have promised the stadia will be able to be picked up and shipped out to go to countries in the developing World that can't afford to build such grounds themselves after the tournament. Clever vote-winning tactic. Wonder if they will stick to it?

In hindsight, it was obvious Qatar would get it once FIFA committed the World Club Cup to UAE for the next few years. There is obviously something about massive amounts of oil-cash that FIFA executives like.

In some ways i agree that Russia should have got it, but lets get rid of the ridiculous, parasitical circus that surrounds the whole selection process.

I was at the WC in Germany 2006 and despite the tournament being held in the world's best beer country all you could buy in stadia was the official FIFA approved purveyor of bat piss, aka Budweiser. It is so weak and crap they will have no problems passing it off as a non-alcoholic drink in a muslim country..

I wonder if Budweiser will be keen to throw their usual millions to become an official partner of the world cup?
It'd be pretty ironic considering its a dry state.

South Africa was pretty disappointing from a fan attendance perspective (empty seats m'lord) but Qatar could be an embarrassment.  Compared to S Africa it is hotter, more expensive, less tourist sights and a I'd guess a lot less to do.  Who will go?

Fan enjoyment is obviously low down on FIFA's priority list.
