Title: Had enough...
Post by: koreanmeatballs on November 27, 2010, 10:18:10 PM

Cant stand it anymore, I've had enough.

How the hell is Stewart Downing anywhere near our first team. He's a joke of a footballer.

Somehow he's our leading goalscorer but the boy is a disgrace...

Defenders of Downing I ask you...

When has he won a 50-50?
When has he ever left 'some one for dead'
When has he put a decent cross in?
When has he tracked back (Not fucking walking, I mean ran back and put a tackle in)

you've had enough. You "support" a Premier League football team, one of the most succesful teams in the top flight of English football that is going through a tricky spell, and it's all too much for you? Put yourself in the shoes of a supporter of Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Sheff Wed or any number of teams that are facing or have faced administration over the years and you'll know what tough times really are all about. We are all very, very lucky by comparison.

Decent cross?

You haven't seen Albrighton's goal against Man United then? It was only two weeks ago.

Stewart Downing overall has been very very good this season for us. I also think he is our top scorer.

you joking mate, Downing has been one of our best this season and today I thought he battled more than most and yes including tracking back.

Downing has been a consistant performer this season whilst others around him (Dunne, Warnock, A Young...) clearly have not.

I've had enough of Downing not Villa. Christ.
I have paid enough over the years to have an opinion and he's an absolute joke.

The fella won Boro's player of the year two years in a row?!? Jesus Christ. How?
The 'cross' to Albrighton I could do. Not exactly Beckham-esque.

Err, Downing is a much improved player compared to last season. He's played very well for us this season... I think your harsh criticism of him is unfair.

Downing has put in some decent performances this season but he has also been anonymous quite a few times, the guy has talent do doubt but his application lets him down too often, we dont have to many choices, there are too many players putting in below par performances but if they are fit they play

I'd have him down as our best performer this season .

I think he's quality although I admit I think he has more to give. I think if GH can really get into him we will have an exellant player on our hands. Also, he wouldn't be in my top few under- achievers so far this season. But you are entitled to your opinion and a mate of mine who is also a season ticket holder shares your opinion. Although so long as Dunne is in the team my mate hasn't got much bile left for Downing.

Just like Ash, they need better players around them. As much as I'm thrilled to see Hogg and Bannan they can't be relied on at such an young age to anchor the midfield. It puts added pressure on players like Ash and Downing to be perfect in everything else they do because if they're not the counter attack is up against that midfield and what has been a poor defence. Blaming either of them for the current situation is harsh in my opinion.

In the same way that posts acclaiming him as our best player of the season are OTT the opening post is also way wide of the mark.

He's been much improved this year.

He'll never be an all action midfielder barging the opposition of the ball and flying into tackles. Where he comes into his own is his use of the ball, delivery, chance creation and so on. So I tend to judge him on that.

Still more to come from him I reckon. But when he's played well this year we've looked a better side. Getting him to deliver that more often and Albrighton to continue as he has done so far this season will be key in turning our season around. That and sticking Fatty Dunne on the treadmill, obv.

First and foremost I must apologise, few beers in the system and being frustrated at Villa meant I didn't put my point across that well.

I'm not a Bluenose not to worry, have had a season ticket have done for 20 years and the blokes signature I have as my name, I never realised it was your signature. Whoops.

Anyway on to Stewie, I'm just amazed and frustrated with the bloke.

Frustrated because with our total lack of squad depth this was a great time for him to step up to the plate. He's our 'record signing' he's our second highest earner. Now is the time to show us why. Clark has really stepped up in our little 'crisis,' Bannan has imposed himself on games more then Downing.
Downing should be leading the way for these youngsters, he simply isn't. Don't want to use the phrase, 'set an example'  but he should be. Stewie don't bottle challenges, track back now and again and don't disappear for most of the game. He's in his favoured position he should be doing more.

I'm amazed because he's managed to score quite a few goals for but yet done sweet F.A.

I honestly think we could get stuck in a bit of a relegation scrap and our big players should be doing everything they can to get the results we need. For me Downing hasn't and Dunne isn't doing himself any favours.

Scapegoats? Maybe, but there is a reason they are.

Anyway that's my point of view. Oh and I wished we attacked more yesterday, Arsenals defence looked pretty shoddy, they wont win the league with that back line.

Dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear. Will someone please pick his teddy up and put it back in the pram for him. Downing's doing O.K. as far as I'm concerned, but as someone wiser than me has already pointed out, it's all in the eye and mind of the beholder - it's a matter of opinion, not of fact.

Downing has been one of our most improved players & he did track back yesterday, at one point he lost possession but he raced back won the ball back and played it to Friedel.

The one and only think I will say is that he doesn't like 50-50's or sticking his head where somone's boot is, ie the cross in the box in the 2nd half he didn't fancy other than that you are talking utter bollocks

No he isn't. The £10m we paid for Downing is less than the £12m we paid for Milner.
Title: Re: Had enough...
Post by: villa1 on November 28, 2010, 10:45:56 AM
He's been much, much better this season. I did think he was poor yesterday though. He constantly let their players drift off him and there were occasions where he lost the ball and made no effort to chase back. That said, he shouldn't be singled out as the whole team were poor in the first half!

Did notice a few people started to boo him when got the ball yesterday, mind.

Did we not pay 10 million then with 2 million add ons? My apologises if I am incorrect.

Ireland was about 6 million wasn't he? The blokes a mentalist, think it's becoming clear that he never wanted to be here, never has done.

I can see where people are coming from with the 50 50 challenges. However, there were a number of occasions yesterday when the ball was in the air on the edge of their box and he stood and watched their player head it away. If he at least challenged for it the ball may have fallen kindly for us. Instead the defender simply headed it out of danger.

We did.

And which of those performance related add-ons do you think he has hit so far, based on your opening post?

I'm not in the lower north, somebody else has similar frustrations?

'And which of those performance related add-ons do you think he has hit so far, based on your opening post?'

Isnt that the point? He hasn't hit these performance related add-ons?

I'm sorry if I have annoyed people with this but we have signed the guy for a lot of money, signed him from a team where he was player of the season numerous times. I was just expecting a bit more from him. Like the rest of them, well not Big Brad, Clark and Wee Barry they need to improve a hell of a lot or at least look like they give a shit.

KM, Downing is not a grafter in the way the likes of Des Bremenr used to be, but he does have shed loads of ability and skill.

In Spain ( for example), he is the type of player they love - not knocking Des Bremner at all, but workhorses are two a penny - players who can put the ball on a sixpence ( as Downing can) are in short supply and we should focus on what he can do rather than what he can't.

FFS. Downing has been very good this season, why are people getting on his back after a couple of bad games? lets remember hardly any one has played well over the last two games. Probably only Clark, but if he hadn't have scored yesterday then we'd probably be saying he was poor too.

Yes, we are in a shit position, and we've got loads of injuries and a shit run of games coming up. We have to just get on with it and all pull together. People need to remember that the manager is new, he's been left with an average squad which is quite low in numbers. People are expecting too much too soon.

They tend to be things like playing 100 games for us, helping us qualify for the Champions League and gaining international caps?

Which of these (or any other) hypothetical performance related add-ons to trigger an extra £2m to Middlesbrough do you think he should have hit by now?

I'm not Downing's biggest fan, he's a decent footballer but he is a fanny, but there are plenty who have been much worse than him this season. Ashley 'world class and thinks he's better than us' Young, Friedel has been at fault plenty of times, the defence is shambolic and keystone cops, and our strikeforce is piss poor. Gabby is our best striker which says it all. If it wasn't for Downing's goals we'd be in even more trouble because the others are hardly banging the goals in are they?!

I agree with you koreanmeatballs when you say you wish we had attacked more when we scored our second goal.  I think Arsenal were there for the taking. With Albrighton and a fully charged Gabby on the pitch who knows what might have happened... I think the scoreline would have been different.

It's frustrating but we've simply got to give the manager time and try to fight our way through these testing times.  As for Downing, I think he has been very good this year.
