Title: Bannan Impresses on Scotland Debut
Post by: alanclare on November 17, 2010, 08:21:51 AM
From todays Times' report on Scotland v Faeroes Isles:

The highlight of the night was seeing Barry Bannan make his Scotland debut. A bird-like little twig in midfield, he is only 20 years old but already impressing at Aston Villa. The midfield player looks so frail and brittle that you would hardly believe he has a career ahead of him in football, but Bannan has already swept aside these doubts. On the basis of these 90 minutes, he will be worth watching. The youngster smacked a superb left-foot shot off a post from 25 yards and generally showed craft and skill.

He did look good, he can only get better. He is going to be some player.

He might need a rest though as he played the whole game last night.

Much the same kind of remarks that were made about Sid when he first appeared.

I don't get the 'rest' thing !

He's 20, he should be able to play 3 games in 8 days with no problem at all - I played 3 games every weekend when I was 20 ( and quite brilliantly I thought ;-0 )

Nice one Bananaman.

After all, he doesn't have much weight to carry round....like Dunne, for example.

Those of a certain age may remember a player called Bobby Collins who played a key role at Leeds doing the groundwork for the Giles/Bremner era.

He was an old fashioned inside forward about 5'2" as hard as nails and a very skilfull decent player.  Everything I've seen, heard and read about Bannan reminds me of Collins.  If he turns out as good we will have one hell of a player.

He's only featured in the last few weeks so I doubt he needs a rest yet.  Downing came back from injury last season and played a lot of games without a rest up to the end of the season.

Time for a new contract to keep any predators away?

Hard to believe this is the same player who was written off after the Burnley game.

I managed to see most of the first half of the Scotland game.  Bannan looked very comfortable and very inventive, he certainly looks the part.

I watched the Scotland game-just to keep an eye on bananaman
He's got great vision and self belief, willing to take the faroese on if they were tight to him
and able to make excellent long skillfull passes when he was given time.
Watching the match you could see that his skill and willingness to try things was rubbing off on the other jocks who were also trying expansive passes

Levein specifically praised him post game.

I'm happy as long as he gets a game ahead of some of the overrated and useless dross we have been seeing in the Scotland team recently.

Press reports seem to reckon that he should be a regular rather than just a young player with potential.

he was superb... alright it was against the faroes, however, its not like the jocks are blessed with amazing talent, and he didnt missplace a pass all night...

one thing i did notice was that the useless one trick pony maloney really didnt like passing to him, and when stood over free kicks didnt encourage a young lad on his debut, but just looked at him and said it was his...

someone is afraid of losing their place, methinks...

Pat Nevin was saying the same on the highlights programme last night.  I know it was only the Faroes last night but it was only Man Utd on Saturday too.

Nothing seems to faze the wee numpty.  Long may it continue.

I watched the 1st half last night.

He is always very positive when he gets the ball, he always looks to "hurt" the opposition.

More importantly, the weight of the pass is always correct, the ball through to Mackie in the 1st half, the lay off to the RB, all top quality passes.

I would give him a 7/8 year contract now tbh.

The best thing about him is you want him to get the ball, and i'm glad hes a Villa player.Hats off to the scout who picked him up at 14.

We all knew the kid had potential, it was just a shame MON never really thought he had justified potential... now this season we've seen this season how great lil' Barry is. He's just been really professional and stepped up to the mark playing for us when we've needed him too - cracking lil' player he is, the Scottish Xavi.

Didn't O'Neill give him a new long-term contract at the start of the summer?

Not to mention the fact that MON sent him on loan to Blackpool in order to gain experience.  Arguably experience that is aiding his performances at the moment.

Don't think he played a massive part for Blackpool.

He got bollocked by Holloway though for partying.

According to wiki, he played 30 times for blackpool and derby in 2009 and 2010.  A fair number of games.  I am sure that must have helped his development in some way.  Regardless, it's not really important just getting tired of the repetitive "MON was rubbish" jokes that are all over H&V.  Whilst I agree with their sentiment it's kind of getting like the "can he play right back?" gag of previous seasons.

Rant over.  Sorry.

Good question, can he play right back?

Why didn't Barry take the penalty?

Why didn't Barry take the penalty?

He was only a child at the time.

Oh, that Barry.

It was still only against The Faroe Fucking Isles though. Let's not get too excited. Yet.
