Craig Levein has revealed Barry Bannan could be one of several Scotland U-21 stars handed their chance in the friendly with the Faroe Islands. (http://www.teamtalk.com/aston-villa/6485048/Bannan-set-for-senior-Scotland-call?)
It is likely that the Scotland boss will face call-offs for what is an unattractive friendly at Pittodrie and he hinted that some of the international players at Rangers could be given some respite due to their Champions League exertions.
Levein will turn to Billy Stark's youngsters, who came close to qualifying for the 2011 European Championships last month - losing to Iceland in a two-legged play-off - and 20-year-old Aston Villa midfielder Bannan is top of the list.
Asked if the Tartan Army could expect to see some new faces against the Faroe Islands on November 16, Levein said: "Yes.
"I don't want to sit here and name the squad because we will be doing that next week, but one or two of the more experienced guys won't be in because I feel that they have had a lot of games recently.
"I want to win so I want to keep the nucleus of the team together, but I will be adding.
"The plan is to bring in young Barry Bannan, who has impressed me in the Under-21s and he is now appearing for Aston Villa.
"That's an indication that I want to look further afield, not just to the group that we have got, but for the future so there will be two or three younger lads as well."
Levein, at Hampden today to publicise 'The Management', a book on Scotland's great football bosses, added: "It's important for me to try and get as many players as we had on the field against Spain in the last game back together again.
"You are always hopeful as a manager that when you name your squad everyone will turn up, but we will see."
Scotland's next competitive game is not until next September when the Euro 2012 qualification campaign resumes with games against the Czech Republic and Lithuania at Hampden.
Levein admits such inactivity is not ideal but insists the feeling he had when Scotland came so close to causing an upset against Spain at Hampden, only to lose 3-2, vindicated his decision to become national team boss.
He said: "It is a source of frustration, of course, but that's why there is the friendly game in November, one game in February and two at the end of the season.
"I will use these opportunities to get the guys back together and try and grow the feeling that we are creating a group that is capable of being successful.
"The advantage of working with people on a daily basis is that you get to understand them and develop relationships.
"The difficulty in this situation is that you see them very rarely.
"So it takes a little more time to understand what type of characters you are dealing with.
"I think you have to understand a person before you can get the best out of them. But I am enjoying what I'm doing.
"One of the main reasons I took the job was for nights like we had against Spain.
"It is one of the most unbelievable experiences to be a Scotland manager on a night when I could say the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up with the way the supporters were, the place was really rocking.
"It was a real honour to be the manager. I feel we have a really good group and I am really looking forward to working with them as often as possible."
:) He's looking like a good player in the making.

Don't Scotland have about half a dozen creative midfielders who all get ignored so that the same old defensive cloggers get to play instead though?
-
Yes.
Charlie Adam didn't even get onto the bench for that disgrace against the Czechs.
-
With their dearth of talent I'm surprised he's not been called-up sooner.
-
I will be pleased for him if he get's a senior call up.
-
^^^^^^
Me too. I was told there would be some news for him this week, I'm assuming that is it. My Scots mate says he gets brilliant reviews up there.
-
He did well on Sunday. I've always had nagging doubts about him but that's only due to his size really. He's not put a foot wrong so far this season.
-
I like the look of him and think he could develop. Where he plays is still up for grabs but so far so ggod.
-
good luck to the lad...
fantastic attitude, summed up by his desire to compete with zigic for a header on sunday... i have seen him do that before, and remember in particular a reserve game against reading where he constantly tried to beat andre bikey for aerial balls... was hilarious, but really showed his desire...

That's it for me, desire. He has it in spades, and assuming he's smart about how he applies himself, it should more than make up for his size.
-
his application has never been in question whenever i have seen him... he snaps about like a little terrior, and looks to make things happen...
he is not afraid of anything on the pitch, and loves to work his arse off... he is one that i REALLY hope makes it, because his attitude is brilliant...
-
I dont like it when these players get called up for the international teams , they get big for the boots and other players start tapping them up for the big 4 ;-))

He could be our Luca Modric

It's been announced today.

Let's hope he doesn't get his head turned by all those World class players at big clubs such as...err...such as...Kevin Kyle? David Goodwillie?

Wasn't it Kyle who missed the open goal for Sunderland against us when we won 1-0. Allback scored, without which we could have been relegated?
Goodwillie is a decent midfielder/striker who plays for Dundee United. He can't be worse than Kenny Miller.

Talk about damning with faint praise.

With their dearth of talent, I'm surprised The Sandman hasn't been called up sooner !

Fantastic news ......
Has anyone else met Barry Bannan's Dad by the way ?

Is his name Bruce?

Yes, in the Holte Pub. You only have to be in the same stand as his Mum to know that she's at the game. She has a right foghorn on her.
-
From what I saw, he, shall we say, likes a drink !
-
I hear there is a chance that young Ciarán may receive his international clearance in time to play for Ireland on Wendnesday.
-

To be fair David Goodwillie is a very good up and coming player and wouldn't be too surprised to see him going to a lower Premiership team like Steven Fletcher has... Though I rate Goodwillie more than I did him at that age.
He does however, have a bit of a reputation for causing trouble at night spots.
I'd go but the fuckers are holding it at Pittodrie. No idea why as even accounting for the lower interest they could still hold it at Tynecastle or Easter Road and be closer to the majority of fans.
-
Yes Barry Bannan should get an opportunity, as something has to change with the Scottish national team, and looking to youth must be the best option.
The fact that the Scots have to rely on the likes of 40-year-old David Weir either means that their is no fresh talent in Scotland or the management are not being adventurous enough.
It must be the latter.
-
Let's not forget that he could get the chance to play against his idols, Xavi and Iniesta, at some later date. That would be as good a learning curve as he could possibly get.
-
When's he taking his driving test again?
The nation was hooked last week.
-
I can parallel park better than Barry bannan.

He would have passed but he forgot to take the child seat to put in the instructors car.
-
I would love to be his driving instructor. I'd tell him it's obligatory to scream in terror while performing an emergency stop

Lets find his test route and make sure it is clear for him so there are no problems for him ..........
-
Didn't realise the game was on Tuesday.....that will be 4 games in 11 days for him, hope he doesn't burn out by January in true Villa style.
-
Just under 20 mins gone, Bannan is looking quality. Loads of quick passes and neat touches.
-
and he's hit the post.
Thought he'd scored aswellm but misheard Commons for Bannan.
-
This kid really could be the quality we have long been needing in midfield, right? In 2-3 years time everyone will be saying Milner who?
And it is absolutely laughable that there were reports that MON was planning on dumping Bannan following his spell at Blackpool.
-
Played a big part in the third goal too.
-
Porridge is such a good food ;-)
-
I know people are sick of hearing about Oneil, but I can't help but think 'what if' We'd of had someone else in charge the past few years.
Because all Martin did was sell our young lads and replace them with overpaid oldies.
-
Bannan had a pretty good chance to score in the second half, with his head!
-
Think Bannan was probably just shocked that he was gonna win a header in there box. Had a good all round debut though .........
-
Aye he was very good tonight.
I was telling my mate at work to watch Bannan. There was one ball played in behind the full back that was pretty much identical to the great pass to Downing. He just seems to have that knack that Scotland especially are missing.
Brill!
-
Never mind all that - did he get injured?

Not unless the pat on the back from Craig Levein at the end snapped his twig-like frame.
-
he was superb... alright it was against the faroes, however, its not like the jocks are blessed with amazing talent, and he didnt missplace a pass all night...
one thing i did notice was that the useless one trick pony maloney really didnt like passing to him, and when stood over free kicks didnt encourage a young lad on his debut, but just looked at him and said it was his...
someone is afraid of losing their place, methinks...
