Well, as our manager believes we are a 8-12th placed club that are not good enough to attack I expect to lose 2-0.  Whats more I expect to lose every game (or draw 0-0) until GH buggers off or he starts to play positive football.

Pretty sure Fulham have won one less league game than us this season, are level on points with us and before the weekend had lost their previous two league games, so not sure how they're in much better form than us.

It's a sad reflection on villa at the moment that every game looks like a hard one.
We need a scrappy win so we can gain some confidence back.
Title: Re: Fulham v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Reality on November 02, 2010, 11:46:25 PM
Exactly Dante. We aren't exactly going into these games with much confidence which is horrible considering where we have finished the past 3 seasons on the trot, that the fact we played so negatively at home against the scum.

We also have a long while to go yet before it even gets resolved. Think it is pretty certain that this season is a complete write off. Knew that before the season even started the way our summer was heading. Just pretty sad that we will have to actually wait a year before we can address issues that need addressing NOW.

Annoyed that this game is on my doorstep but I can't go to it this year. Just can't afford it.

Difficult to be too enthusiastic though on current form - I'll go with a draw. 1-1.

I'll be definitely putting money on under 2.5 goals in this game. Think it has our third 0-0 draw in a row written all over it. I wont be confident of winning until Gabby is back playing well. He has his faults were are terrible going forward without him.

Fulham win. We're shit away from home and can't score at the moment, and the midfield problem will continue until we buy a decent one or Petrov or Delph are fit again. But, I still think we're improving.

Have been planning the route to this today.

I've established that it should take about 2 hours and 10 minutes. (108 min's train & 18 min's tube).

As for the result - I'll say 1-1.

Has anyone got an idea when we might see Gabby playing again? Has he got the bubonic plague?

Last weekend I went to Craven Cottage (entertaining some Spanish friends who wanted to see a Premier League match). Whilst Wigan were very poor and lacking in ambition, it was easy to see that Fulham are creative on the ball, like to get forward, have loads of patience and in Salcido have one of the better attacking left fullbacks in the league. And then there was Dempsey who was brilliant all afternoon, scoring both goals, one from Salcido's perfect cross. Andy Johnson also came on - first game back and did what he does, ie made a nuisance of himself and looked pretty sharp. Whilst I am sure we'll make a better fist of it than woeful Wigan, it won't be easy. I was impressed.

Looking at the other fixtures, we could be sitting in the bottom 3 (or 4) if we dont get decent results against Fulham and Blackpool. As close to a must win game as it gets.

Interesting choice about whether Clark or Sidwell plays in midfield alongside NRC. I still maintain that the front 4 is potentially pretty dangerous, but don't have enough goals in them.

Yeah I know but it never strikes me as that imtimidating an away ground for an away team espeically as we'll probably gobble up most of the neutral bit.

Same for Ewood Park which is our next away game.

I like that team Dutch Villa, Fonz, Carew and Ireland from the bench if needed.  What we lose in height from Carew not playing, we would gain from having a big centre mid in Clark.  The 4 attacking boys will need to bring their shooting boots though, we must be more clinical.

I have just read some bad news for Villa fans in this Premier League football article (http://betting.betfred.com/713/sport-betting-news/villa-hit-by-heskey-blow/).

Looks like Heskey will be out for about a month after picking up knee ligament damage in training.

It comes at the worst time for the striker because he has been showing some good form this season and has looked strong in front of goal.
Title: Re: Fulham v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Darth Villa on November 04, 2010, 01:18:13 PM
I'd like Bannan to start in place of Ireland, him and Mark seem to have a good understanding of each others game and may create more chances than we've seen of late. Like Pedro says our foward players are going to have to bring therer striking boots!

I'm trying not to expect much more than a draw so not to ruin the day out, but I have a sneaky feeling we'll do them.

0-1 Albrighton with a screaming volley.

Playing Ash on his own as a central striker is a dreadful idea, it will just invite presure on us as we won't be able to hold the ball up.

Carew or Delfouneso in for Clark and we'll beat them.

Playing Bannan against Fulham might be a good idea, as they like to play a bit of football themselves.
Title: Re: Fulham v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: pedro25 on November 04, 2010, 01:30:55 PM
Bosco I disagree that Fonz is any better at holding the ball up than A Young, Carew, Heskey and Gabby are but I think Fonz would play the lone strikers role pretty similarly to A Young given their comparable sizes, styles, strengths etc.

Nathan is more used to playing with his back to goal than Young certainly is, I don't think we'd see the best of Young playing as a central striker.
Title: Re: Fulham v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Ads on November 04, 2010, 01:35:39 PM
I'd play Ash in behind Carew or potentially give 4-4-2 a go, with the Fonz playing off him. Either way, we need to ensure that we get somebody mobile around him in support. You never know, this could be the 1 in 10 game where Carew goes mental and looks like a footballer.
Title: Re: Fulham v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: pedro25 on November 04, 2010, 01:39:32 PM
I think Dutch Villa's team is the only way to get all our form players in the team, and leave the out of form guys like Sidwell, Carew and Ireland on the bench.  We don't have to worry like last week about pitting the young boys into a derby either, Fulham are a good passing side and Bannan, Albrighton etc should fluorish in such a match.  I'm not a huge fan of Delfouneso from what I've seen so far but he should certainly get 20/30 mins towards the end to impress, and Ireland too probably.

Post by: Ads on November 04, 2010, 01:41:34 PM
Maybe a traditional 4-3-3 rather than the 4-4-1-1 we’ve been playing? Clacker screening the back four, NRC and Ireland central with Downing and Ash providing width around Carew.

I think you have to play Ash, Albrighton and Downing.

Interesting question about whether Ash could play up front by himself, but that feels like a risk. Carew doesn't seem to have the mobility though, so it will be interesting. I'd be v tempted to play Clark ahead of Sidwell. But I think Albrighton, Bannan and Clark in the same midfield might be a bit much. So I'd probably go with Carew and pray that he comes back into form.

We should get there in the end, but it's going to be a stop and start season isn't it . . .

Lawro says we'll lose, and complains about us being "content to play on the counter-attack". He appears to have watched one of our games this season and, reasonably enough, drawn a massive conclusion for it. Honestly, someone should just put him out of his misery.

Under his old mate MON he could have said that but I doubt he ever did. It's far too early to read too much into ''Hotlips'' style but we are trying to keep it on the deck a lot more and place more importance on possession.

Wasn't confident of anything but defeat at Craven Cottage but in the face
of adversity you never know............we will see which players' hearts are
really in it tomorrow

Think I will have an extra pint by the side of The Thames so we might not
look that bad when the whistle goes

We didn't play a 6 man midfield. Else it would have been bloody crowded, and if you were there, it sure wasn't crowded in central midfield.

They had better recall Harry Forrester from loan.  Oh and "Two James Collins, there's only two James Collinseses."

Forrester isn't a centre forward.

"Forrester isn't a centre forward."

Nor is Ireland, but were you at the Burnley game?

I wasn't, but I know it didn't work so I don't think bringing back Forrester is the best idea.

Hopefully Ashley and Downing can provide our goal threat, If Ireland plays, he's got to try and raise his game.

i've gone for a win
But i am struggling to see where our goal threat is coming from
I reckon it will be a tight 1-0
but Fulham will fancy their chances with our paucity of strikers

Draw written all over this one to be honest.

Which of course means it'll go one way or the other.

I reckon we'll nick it. Fonzie to score.

Kilmarnock, but I don't think he's made much of an impact.

Shame I thought he looked useful in the Youth Cup semi against Chelsea.

2-0 Fulham. Think this will be very similar to the Sunderland game.

He's not been too bad for them. They seem to be pretty happy and most want him to play at the weekend.

He scored a hat trick in a bounce game apparently.

Time for The Fonz to prove to GH that he's worthy. It'd be nice to see him play as a centre-forward. Can't remember the last time we played him in that position, he's usually been dumped out wide.

"Villa have scored only two second half goals this season, fewer than any other side in the premiership"

Flashes back to the days when we won 7 or 8 away games consecutively, now we'd be lucky to win 2 in a row let alone away (looking at fixture list)

We used play like we could score from any attack, looked dangerous going forward admittedly that was a while ago now but that's what we need to recapture!

Also i don't buy GH comments about The Fonz saying he needs to be patient and bulk up if the ability's there it should shine through, £7m Hernández is smaller and seems to find the back of the net with ease when he gets his chance, Plus we have no other option but to play Delf so all that waiting and be patient talk is a load of bull.....

He has his chance now, hopefully he'll make an impact him and Albrighton to steal the show tomorrow fingers crossed.........

Down to our bare bones, only one 19 year old striker. You know what, we are going to win 2-1  :). Go the Fonz.

I think GED specifically said it wasn't about fonz bulking up, it was about his willingness to be physical and hold off defenders. Clearly the better your touch, the less physical you need to be. I do think we're asking a lot for a 19 yr old to play the lone striker role. I'd expect to see ash making runs down the channels as the out ball.

I can't predict this one for some reason. We really need a win but it's just hard to see it given injuries, form etc...

I'd take a 0-0.

Greetings from Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherds Bush, my traditional pre-Fulham haunt.

Free internet, you can't beat it !!

As for the game, considering the turmoil (that word's chosen as a tribute to Danny Baker" we have up front, we should struggle. However, I'm actually and surprsingly for me, optimistic for once

We will need to nullify Murphy in midfield if we are get a good result in this game, he pulls most of the strings for them and they look a considerbly worse team when he isn't playing. I'm going for a 1-0 to the Villa, our defence has looked fairly solid and being an away game we should have some opportunities on the counter attack, we just need to take our chances when we get them.

On  the basis that we've lost 5 of our last 6 away games, and can't score, and Fulham are strong at home, I'm struggling to feel confident. I still believe we're capable of winning, but could see a 2 or 3 nil defeat too. A score draw would be a good result. But we're going to have to start putting some of our chances away soon. Would be ironic if we managed it with no senior strikers available!
