My best guess is also the Man U semi away leg in 1971. It looks like the stand at Old Trafford then, plus he looks as if he beats the keeper to score.

I know the strip would be wrong but I think I recognise the player in the background as one of those people that did the rounds of London clubs and my poor brain is telling me Crystal Palace.

;) Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground in March 1972 I believe.

It does not look like the cup tie match from the previous August

With a crowd like that it has to be Old Trafford.

Are you thinking Steve Kember in the background ? I checked because we did play Palace in a couple of league cup games in Oct 1971, and Lochhead scored in both games. However further checks revealed Kember left Palace the month before.
Im sticking with it being the Man U game and the player in the background being John Fitzpatrick.

Went to all three of those Wrexham games. Shame the days of 2nd replays or even more have gone.
A rare appearance in goal for Goeff Crudgington. Tommy Hughes was the regular keeper then, although in the November he had a complete stinker and was mainly to blame for us being knocked out the FA Cup 1st round at 4th division Southend. Hughes only played another couple of games, then Jimmy Cumbes arrived.

...quickly followed by the 6-0 win at Oldham with Andy Lochhead getting a hat trick; all with his feet.

Was at that Wrexham game at Albion, it was a real thriller after a 2-2 draw at Villa Park, and a 1-1 at the Racecourse Ground which was after extra time, Willie Anderson scored in the 93rd minute. Villa scored two in the last five minutes, an own goal and an Andy Lochead winner in the 85th minute in what was the first round of the League Cup. After beating Chesterfield in the second round at Saltergate, and after holding then-first division Crystal Palace 2-2, the Villa beat them 2-0 in the replay with Lochead again superb. In the fourth round Villa were knocked out by Blackpool 4-1, a bit of a hangover from the Saturday match when we were beaten 3-0 at the league leaders, Bournemouth, with their two strikers Boyer and MacDougall giving the Villa back four the runaround.
Geoff Crudgington, incidently, left Villa after only a handful of appearances and became a bit of a legend at Plymouth, where I think he still works to this day helping with the goalkeepers.
