Just chatting to my Mom on Facebook and she was saying that she's been watching this new snooker tournament from Barry Hearn. Anyway, Ronnie O'Sullivan broke, and missed a shot then returned to the table (no balls potted by either player) and asked the ref 'how much prize money for a 147 break'.............then went ahead and got one!
He nearly walked away with just the black left as a fingers up to the organisers as there is no prize for a 147 - just a £4k prize for best break.
Anyone else see this? I've tried looking on YouTube but nothing there yet.
-
Mother lied - he was on 9 points (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/other_sports/snooker/9016342.stm)
Ronnie O'Sullivan fired a remarkable 147 break at the World Open in Glasgow after halting play when on nine points to check the prize for a maximum.
He was told there was no separate pot but cleared up to beat Mark King 3-0.
The 34-year-old appeared content to end on the pink in the final frame and had to be persuaded to pot the black.
Jimmy White now waits in the fourth round for O'Sullivan, whose break was a record tenth career maximum, one more than his rival Stephen Hendry.
It was a typically extraordinary performance from the mercurial O'Sullivan, who has surprisingly fallen to sixth in the world rankings, largely because he chose to miss the recent event in Shanghai...
...Then came the brilliance, and after potting the first red and black in frame three O'Sullivan halted proceedings to ask what the prize for a 147 was, only to be eventually told there was no additional purse and only a £4,000 sum for the highest break.
He potted some outstanding balls in his maximum, achieved in barely 10 minutes - even with the delay when researching about the 147 prize - but shook hands with King after disposing of the pink.
Referee Jan Verhaas persuaded O'Sullivan to finish the break and he duly slammed in the black in nonchalant fashion.
"I wasn't going to pot the black to be honest with you because I asked the ref and was told there was no break prize for a 147," O'Sullivan admitted to the BBC.
"I wanted to make sure because if there was a decent prize then I would definitely have gone for it and I thought I might as well go for it anyway.
"Jan talked me into it [potting the black]. My whole thing was I was going to make 140 and leave the black What's the point of making a 147 if they're only going to give you four grand for it?
"I'm surprised. They're getting stingier. I thought Barry Hearn was supposed to be putting more money into the game, not taking it out.
"I've had loads of 147s so I don't really get excited by it and thought I needed to give myself something to go for. I just thought 'why not?'"
O'Sullivan has been a supporter of Hearn, who has promised to revitalise the sport as new supremo of World Snooker.
The shorter-form World Open sees only three frames needed to win in the early rounds.
Although by my maths if he's only potted 1 red and a black that is 8 points.

I read about it on the BBC Sport website, perhaps it'll be availble on I-Player, not sure if you can access it down under?

He's a genius, but also a bit of a twat.
-
I like him. He doesn't come across as an ordinary human being, let alone an ordinary snooker player.
I'd rather watch him play, or be interviewed, than any other snooker player. Especially Higgins.
-
He's a Yam-Yam aint he, O'Sullivan?
They're all mental
-
Is Jan a female referee? I know the female ref at Sheffield is quite foxy but maybe it's the outfit and white gloves...
-

They're all mental
I don't think he stayed there long.
-
Jan's a big Dutch bloke. I watched it live- couldn't believe the cheeky bastard, when he asked what the prize money was for a 147. But what a clearance!
-
Only ronnie would have the cheek to do that.
-
And the genius to follow it through by getting the 147 as well.
-
He's a genius, but also a bit of a twat.
A bit ? He's a complete twat
-
Speaking as someone who has never managed a snooker break in double figures, I can accept that a high level of skill and application is required to complete a maximum 147.
However, O'Sullivan's attitude here was outrageous. It was an insult to his opponent, the paying customer and the TV broadcaster and their viewers.
The worst part of though is his assertion that £4000 wasn't worth his efforts, especially when he'd paid tax, but £25k would pay for a holiday. Another example of a top sportsman (if a glorified pub game can be deemed a sport) who has lost touch with the reality of life for those whose hard-earned puts them in earnings league they enjoy.
A grade 'A' twat.
-
If the revamp of snooker is to succeed then snooker needs O'Sullivan a lot more than O'Sullivan needs snooker.
Barry Hearn will be rubbing his hands together with glee at Ronnie's antics, perfect publicity, snookers "bad boy" acts like a twat but still pots a maximum - he couldn't have asked for more, I wouldn't be surprised if Hearn has sent Ronnie a quiet "thanks, more of the same please".
-
Like Alex Higgins and Jimmy White before him Ronnie makes watching Snooker worthwhile. I don't condone some of his antics but, theres always something interesting thats going to happen when hes about.

Another interview.
I think O'Sullivan is just what snooker needs; someone with some gumption and personality.
He says in that interview it's not the money that motivates him and that he'll give the prize to charity. I don't think that makes him a twat or anything like a footballer.
-
He's a genius, but also a bit of a twat.
Ronnie O'Sullivan is definitely a genius and he makes Stephen Hendry feels his age at World Open !
-
Hey, actually one of my friend also said me about that price money of 147 break video. He is really good and professional snooker player. Then after i tried to search on Daily motion and many other social websites but i dint get that video. But my friends brought that video and i watched that video, the face of that guy was totally change on his question's reply.

The lack of posts in this thread may reflect the fact that the game no longer manages to capture the public imagination.
Still, World Championship starts tomorrow and I'll be watching.
Got an outright bet on Selby on a "if O'Sullivan wins you get your money back" basis and also had a fiver each-way on Jack Lisowski.
-
Mark Allen for me, not going to have a bet though.
-
I think Selby is due to win it. If not this time, then soon.
I love the snooker and am really looking forward to this. I don't think Ronnie will win it again due to his lack of match practise this season.
-
Ray Reardon for me.
-
That would be fangtastic.
-
You can count on him.
-
I wouldn't stake your bet on him
-
They glow in the dark, they glow in the dark, the Villa fans at the snooker, they glow in the dark.
-
Match-fixing scumbag Higgins out. Hurrah.
-
Mark Allen for me, not going to have a bet though.
Which of course, was the correct decision ::)

Used to love this fortnight in the olden days of 70s, 80s , 90s but lost a lot of interest in it nowadays .

Brilliant how he laughed off the 3 fouls that lost him that frame. Great attitude.
-
He seemed a nice guy, and his name sounds like "Poontang". What's not to like?
-
He's my new favourite player.

Is there anyone in any sport more odious than Barry Hearn?

Well, so much for my prediction.
O'Sullivan still seems to be struggling with his long game, but once he's in he's deadly. It'll take a good player to beat him.
Ding has probably played the best snooker so far this tournament.
-
The match practise doesn't seem to be that much of an issue... Higgins won his first tournament back after his ban didn't he?
Barry Hawkins single-handedly ruined both of my bets. The swine.

cdsimondawkinsfan quietly adds Barry Hawkins to his list of odious people in sport.
Earl Strickland is probably the biggest bellend of the ones you mentioned.

[/quote I had Selby at 6/1. Its not the first time i've had him to win it. Never going anywhere near him again he is like a 1970s style snooker player, just match play and no fluid break building.
-

Higgins was practising all the time though ready for his come back. O'Sullivan had pretty much given up the game and only started playing again shortly before the Championships started.

Thats why Ronnie is so special. He hasn't played for a year, has only been practising a month or so, yet can come back and play a session of snooker, like this afternoon that no one has got anywhere near to matching its standard all season.
Unless his form drops significantly, he'll canter to the title.

And then walk away again from the sounds of it. Only came back for the money to pay his kids school fees, seems strange not to just do a bit of after dinner work if that is the way he really feels about Snooker. He is brilliant and the only player I find exciting to watch play, but his on off play, not play, don't really like it thing is strange. I do wonder is he is just finding a way of deflecting the pressure from himself by convincing himself not to care.

Does anyone else think Barry Hawkins looks a bit like Paul McGrath?

No but Steven Reid does

The O'Sullivan-Trump Semi is basically the Final. I reckon whoever wins will trounce Hawkins/Walden about 18-5.
-
For the first time in years I watched some of the snooker last night (Hawkins v Walden)
In one frame all the reds ended up in one corner and after about 30 minutes they opted for a re-rack.
In the other frame, all the reds somehow ended up on the balk side of the blue.
Two of the most bizarre frames of snooker I've ever seen.
As other have mentioned, neither of these two should trouble the winner of Trump v O'Sullivan
-
I'm currently watching the Hawkins v Walden semi.
It is, without a doubt, the worst snooker match I have ever witnessed.
-
You've obviously never seen a Peter Ebdon match.
-
You've obviously never seen a Peter Ebdon match.
By worst I meant of the poorest quality. After about 13 frames Hawkins highest break was 36 yet he was only 2 frames behind (I'm not sure if he has broken that 36 after 16 frames, I turned it off, it really was quite embarrasing).
Ebdon's matches are just slow and boring.

It's certainly the worst world semi final I've ever seen. How these two got to that stage is quite beyond me. Trump or O'Sullivan will win win it with a session to spare whichever one gets through.
-
I remember O'Sullivan in a final about 10 years or so ago. Not sure who he was playing (Dott?) but we went quite a few frames behind and then turned it on in the final two sessions and ran out a relatively easy winner. I'm still convinced he was letting him get a lead so his odds would go out and he could then bet a wedge on himself.
Look for something similar if he's in this year's final against Walden or Hawkins.
-
This finals been brilliant so far. Hawkins would be beating any other player on his current standard.
-
Title number five for O'Sullivan. No one can touch him when he plays at the top of his game hawkins did well to get near him.
His comment about a whore's drawers was 20 minutes too early in the evening though ::)
-
Stephen Lee banned from snooker for twelve years. Harsh or not ?
I think he should be banned for life myself.
-
Ban him for life, not for cheating, but for being the most negative snooker player on the circuit.
