Gabby really needs to work on his movement to be more of a threat.

Is it too early to be a season-defining game?

A defeat would really hurt the confidence of the squad. I suppose it's Houllier's job to bring it out more.

I think it is a defining game ... gives us the opportunity to develop an image of being stronger at home (with 3 wins on the trot) , which we've struggled with in the last couple of seasons.
That'll be the kiss of death then!

Ireland has to start.   I would bring him in for Albrighton.  And put AY back on the wing...  Let Albrighton run at them for the last 25 minutes...    Play Ireland in an attacking role in a 5 man midfield with Gabby up front...  3-0 Villa

very dangerous game this one, coyle has them believing in their selves and they'll fancy

Should be a villa win but anything else will be seen as disastrous around these parts.

2-2.

Coyle will come up with something better than Megson has produced in the last few seasons at VP which isn't hard. He's a 4-4-2 man so I'd imagine it will be an open game which should suit us.

I expect Gabby to get some joy against a CB partnership of Zat Knight and Andy O'Brien but equally I'm concerned that after Monday Dunney and Collins will be feeling vulnerable and with martin Petrov whipping in the crosses for Davies, not confident of a clean sheet.

It would be good for GH to come into a winning team. I think we're not too bad on our own patch. Certainly we should be twatting the likes of Bolton. Our midfield worries me against bruisers though, so it might be tight.

I thought Juicy was back in goal for them because he missed the Arsenal game, or did he get done for violent conduct? Kicking and cuffing a Blues player shouldn't count as an offence. Interesting to see how we line up- on the bench as much as on the pitch. Is GH fit and available??

I feel bad about saying it but I really don't have any confidence in KMac - to pick the right team, to make the right substitutions and to gee-up/bollock the players when need be.

The imbalance in the midfield will continue and Warnock and Dunne are not at their best at the moment. I would gladly take a scrappy 1-0 win, Houllier cannot come in soon enough.

I'll be in a mountain-village in the south of Italy when this is on, it'll be a nervous text home on Saturday evening to see how we've fared.

Very tempted to go for an away win but I'll say 1-1.
Which reminds me, the pools seem to have turned against us after the Newcastle thumping. They had us down to lose against Everton and now to draw against Bolton despite the fact we've thumped them at home in recent seasons and that geezer in the Sunday Times always bangs on about previous encounters as if they're hugely indicative in his pools column.

I would hope Houllier's presence in the stand will galvanise them sufficiently to see off Bolton assuming McDonald picks the right side - for me the same as Stoke but with Ireland for Albrighton and Young back out wide.

9 points from 5 games would be a decent base to work from.

I've just taken up the club on a current deal and got a ticket in the Holte for £10 for this game!

3-1 to us. A bit like Monday's game with us playing great football in patches and looking clueless in others. We could make it more comfortable for ourselves if Brad stops hoofing it up the field at every opportunity and conceding possession but we won't. Expect us to be under more pressure than necessary, as usual, and hope that Houllier can sort out this part of our game in due course.

We would have walked Monday's game if we had been smarter about keeping the ball, but that's probably a hangover from MON's days. Keep the ball lads and we'll do fine.

I doubt Houllier is the kind of man to pick a team from his french office having not even worked with the squad on the training pitch. You, sir, are deluding yourself. It will be a KMac team and tactical design through and through.

That midfield is powder-poof (sic) and piss-weak. Downing+Albrighton+ one (never mind two as you have) of Ireland and Young is always going to be out-muscled. Petrov or NRC can't be expected to break-up play on their own.

For physical away games I'd consider bringing Cuellar in at the back with Dunne, stick Collins in midfield alongside NRC, take Downing or Albrighton out and put Young on the left, Ireland in the hole.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Bolton Wanderers Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on September 17, 2010, 08:16:36 AM
I'd pick the same team. They showed lots of quality going fwds so I'd definitely stick with the same front 4. I thought Albrighton was excellent in the first half, but weak in the second when he was mostly on the left and just kept on running straight into the full back!

There's a temptation to bring Ireland in, but that does risk leaving us weak in the middle so I'd stick with what we have.

I'm not quite sure why Warnock is getting so much stick, one slip apart (on a a greasy pitch) I don't remember him doing that much wrong?
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Bolton Wanderers Pre-Match Thread

Agree with Matt, same team again, and Warnock criticism harsh.  I'm not that fussed we got Ireland in and don't think he warrants a place right now.  A fit Delph may have been a good option in our current system ahead of NRC or Petrov, but I don't see Ireland as a replacement for either, rather the forward 3 mids who are all playing pretty well.  Carlos is unlucky not to be in but Dunne and Collins just edge it for me overall.  I've a gut feeling Fonz won't make it as a top player, but hopefully I'm wrong.

I actually thought that Paul "dirty ex-Albion bastard" Robinson was the worst player in the PL.

Either way that's half of their back 4 that we agree are extremely shite.

Robinson will give us loads of free kicks tomorrow with his constant fouling. Let's hope we take advantage.

I think:

I know our last match was another horrendous Stoke City disaster, but if we can play for a spell like we did in that 25 minute chunk of Monday's game, then we could, and should, put tomorrow's game out of sight without any real problems.

Robinson will give us loads of free kicks tomorrow with his constant fouling. Let's hope we take advantage.

Cahill usually seems to have a stinker against us, but I'm still glad that he's out for the game.

Hopefully Kevin Davies will be too.

Edited as I'm going barmy....

This is a banker, Andy O'Brien is totally shit and they have no Jussi in goal, one of the best keepers in the Premier in fact.
Add the fact that Cohan can't play due to Yom Kippur and the possible exclusion of Davies.

3 points for sure.

Coyle has only ever managed to take either Burnely or Bolton to a clean sheet away from home once in the premier league. We normally score at least 4 at home to Bolton. They have their keeper and best defender out, and possibly their best fwd - though elmander does seem to have found his scoring boots.

I reckon we'll get a good win here. Minimum of 3 goals for me.

I read we have a clean bill of health, delph and weimann excluded. So sidders and Carew fit it seems

We haven't lost a home league game in September since 1992.

I love strange stats like that!

5-2 to Villa

You still having to type really lightly JD?
Yeah I am Pete, theres been 650+ aftershocks since the biggie two weeks ago. It's like living on a boat. The beer and shakes must have affected my typing. I mean't 5-1 to Villa.

What about that other rarity - a home league game that started at 3 o'clock on a Saturday?

Right I would play:

--------------Friedel-----------------

Young, Dunne, Collins, Warnock

---------Sidwell----NRC-------------

Young-------Ireland------Downing

--------------Gabby------------------

Sidwell and Coker to guard the back line, offer some energy and aggression. Let the attacking mid 3 do the creative stuff, and all Ireland total freedom.

I would rather have Albrighton on the pitch than Downing, but think the lad could do with a rest.

Probably won't be as comprehensive as last season, about 3-0 I reckon.

With us at full strength and so many of Bolton's key players missing we really ought to win this comfortably.

I'll go for a 2-0 or 3-0 win with Ashley Young bagging a brace and Gabby the other (depending on whether we score 2 or 3 obviously!)  ;D

Bolton are without Davies, Jussi Jascwhateverhisnameis and possibly Kevin Davies.

Andy O'Brien will play with Knight at the back.

This is amazing Paul. I didn't know you understood the Mikkelians speak (Jussi is from Mikkel in eastern Finland) and you have written it exactly like his father does. The Jascwhateverhisnameis's, a proud tribe, are fed up with their name  being simplified to Jääskeläinen. ;D

So easy to skew though isn't it, win the next 2 and it'll be among the best starts for X years.

I don't care how it comes about but we need a win, and I think the players willl give KM a good send off. Apparently Gary Mac is going to be at the game along with GH, so things are finally coming together. We'll need a few weeks to settle down, but we simply need to be contention for a european position come January, and I hope we are still in the Carling Cup. Then we can attack things on three fronts, and with a player or two added, end the season with something shiny.

Anyway, back to today 2-0 Villa - Carew and Gabby.

Ireland in for NRC is the only change from Monday.

Well it won't get the best out of Ireland, but against Bolton 'High-Line' Wanderers at home you'd hope it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. You'd hope.

I agree with that. I think NRC deserved a chance but so far he has hardly embraced the opportunity....Time for Ireland to start showing.

Mind you I also dreamt that the hamster was giving me bad time for not taking him seriously.
