I may be jumping the gun a tad here, but let's presume Gerrard Houllier becomes our new manager. What is the single thing you would most like him to change? I wouldn't call it a priority as such, as player trading can't happen until Jan at the earliest, but if you had his ear and could ask for one thing, what would it be?
I've listed the common gripes during Martin's tenure, but if anyone has anything else please shout and I'll add it to the poll.
-
Where is the "win trophies" option?
-
His nationality.
-
Get the spine right.
-
Learn them how to take a penalty.
-
Keeping the ball, passing it to soemone who is wearing the same coloured shirt.
-
Technical coaching for me.
Heskey will go eventually.
The squad will be rotated.
Foriegn players will be bought if the club want them.
We are capable of attractive football on occasion.
-
I don't want us to sign foreign players purely because they're foreign. They have to be good enough. And if they're good enough it doesn't matter where they come from.
But I'd like to think we will no longer refuse to even consider players purely because they're foreign (or have no experience of British football) which appeared to be the case under O'Neill.
-
Just play players in their normal position please. Simple really.
-
Movement off the ball.
-
More attractive football.
We're never going to win the league but we should at least be treated to some decent football while we pitch for 5th place. I don't think Houlier will be the man for creating a swashbuckling, 1977-style Villa side though.
Oh, and taking the Uefa cup seriously. This is something I think Houlier may be able to help with
-
I'd like the one thing to be that James Milner is Houllier's love child and he kicks up a stink at Man City and comes back.
Apart from that, exciting football.
-
Find the key to turning 4 or 5 of those draws into wins and somehow educate the fans that can't tell the difference between a football club and a soap opera.
-
A proper thread title!

I know the difference! One's the most miserable, least entertaining thing on TV, watched by misery arses with no lives, and the other's Eastenders.
-
My total fixation on this site,i'm begining to worry.
-
Bigger scope for transfers, that does not mean any Joe Foreigner either, but casting a bigger net. Wonder if he (Houllier, should he get the job) may be able to get the jump on getting in some French kids over Wenger for example.
-
Cracking thread John. All five of your options would do nicely but if I had to plump for one it would be an improvement in our through balls, someone like Ireland or Young who can work that role in the hole and give us more penetration. About time we had some sexy football.

What's wrong with the thread title?
-
If you improve the technical coaching, the more attractive football should take care of itself

1st one sounds an awful lot like corination street... Other than that all of the above and taking the uefa cup seriously, im starting to warm round to Houllier now...

I've gone for technical ability but that's wishful thinking. Technical ability is gained at an earlier age. It's not just a problem at Villa it's most of the clubs, or rather, English players in our league who lack it.
So, hopefully, the new man will try to improve our technical ability to some extent but I think we'll have to settle for ball possession and passing for the remainder of this season.
This would improve us.
-
Get in David Moyes as his assistant!

I think that when he is fit Fabian can do that, he has an eye for a pass from what i have seen.

I voted for playing more attractive football, as I believe it would also be more effective football - see West Ham game for evidence.
We have a very good squad of players who should be performing better than they have, and most if it's down to enjoying their games. I'm fed up of MON's media chums saying that he got this squad to over achieve. In my view, his inept tactics and catastrophic squad selection meant that the team did not finish the season strongly enough and squandered an opportunity to finish 4th.
As far as attractive football is concerned, I would expect the team to start retaining the ball more, cut down on hoof ball, pass to a team mate and then make yourself available for a simple return pass and play with a bit more intelligence than we did under MON. These are all basic things which have been missing from our play, and if incorporated into the current strengths of the team will mean that we do very well this season.
-
Some continental flair.
-
Challenging more often for trophies.
-
Im torn between selling Heskey and playing more attractive football.
Heskey it is...
I want to see more movement off the ball as Paulie said and more tecnical coaching and maybe one or two foreign signings. Perish the thought
-
Challenging more often for trophies.
We didn't do too badly on that count last year in 2 of the competitions we were in.
I think it's a case of which of the above is most likely to actually see us WINNING a trophy in the near future!
-
maybe one or two foreign signings
That'll be a given with Houllier in charge won't it?
-
Can you add a 'Nothing' option so that Chris Smith can vote? It hardly seems fair to exclude him.
-
Pass, trap, move with and strike a ball competently and in the manner, direction and/or to the player you envisaged it reaching - what a crazy thing to wish for...
-
More flexibility in the formations and tactics and more open-mindedness on foreign signings. The latter should be guaranteed, he must have a head start on most managers when it comes to young french players.
-
playing more attractive football, change the shirt to proper villa shirt?
-
My vote went to proper squad rotation. If we don't the players will tire and it will become a hindrance. My second choice would be more foreign signings (If they're good enough it doesn't matter if they play for Barnsley or Bursaspor we should be interested).
-
Aren't the first three options pretty interrelated?

You could argue that they are all interrealted to an extent, but the way I see it the foreign players is a matter of transfer policy, the attractiveness is match day tactics and the technical coaching is about ball skills and largely dependent on who the assistants are.
So, for instance, signing foreign players may not have the expected effect if we were to train thme in the same way and use the existing tactics.
-
Play a passing game, which means more movement off the ball.
Get rid of with immediate effect of EH.

Made me spit my drink out! lol

Don't get too excited - I only put the 'Sell Heskey' option in there for you!
