Bit of fun. Try and make a team of Villa players that could be considered for a Judas XI.

Platt, Milner, Hodge - midfield's well stocked...

Who was the central defender who kissed the badge and then got too big for his boots after the Euros?  Mocked David Beckham when he missed a penalty?

He only seemed to mention he was a Blues fan when he signed for them. Up until that point he was always coming out with how much of a Villa fan he was. Raiding the pitch against Tranmere my arse!

In the same way as Barry and Platt.  Went away to an international tournament, came back and we weren't good enough for him.

Let's be honest though, he was playing for us when we were at rock bottom, and clubs like Inter and Barca were supposedly interested in him. Who wouldn't leave?

In that case David Platt isn't a Judas either, and Dwight Yorke was quite right to take his opportunity.  Come to think of it we weren't in too clever position when Steve Hodge left.  We may have to rethink this "Judas" idea.

Ah, but leaving us for United is being a Judas to me. Leaving for Barcelona isn't. Then kissing the United badge as well. Wanker, ungrateful ******.

As opposed to kissing the Villa badge then wanting to leave a few weeks later?  Because of "supposed" interest that never actually materialised?

EDIT: According to Wikipedia Barca were interested.  Where did he end up at?

I don't get the Yorke thing,he gave us nearly 10 years service, then moved to the best team in the country and won everything he possibly could. We made a good profit out of him,its a shame JG spunked most of it.

Doesn't matter where he ended up at. When it became public knowledge that he fancied a move then people turned completely against him for good. Add the Beckham scenario and he simply couldn't stay. We all know the English media love a witch hunt.

Well yeah, that's how it happens.  May I remind you think is the Judas thread for football fans and not the let's be fucking magnanimous thread.  Alpay's a nice guy but Yorkie is scum.  Right, nothing like a bit of consistency.  What a crock of shit.

Because of the way McInally couldn't stop scoring until Christmas, then couldn't do anything for the rest of the season there will always be a doubt that he gave up once he'd got a move sorted.

mcinally isnt a judas, we had seen the best he had, which wasnt great and we sold him while we could, loved his commitment, shame his ability side wasnt as good!

McInally left Villa for Bayern Munich.  Hardly the career downturn of someone past his best.  Imagine if we'd have had him instead of Olney or Cascarino when we were challenging for the title in 89/90!

From wikipedia:

Quote
McInally – now nicknamed Big Mac by the Bayern fans – began well in the Bundesliga, proving a handful for the defences, but then the referees clamped down on his style and his disciplinary record suffered. He was a regular throughout this season, but halfway through, the Bayern management decided that this strikeforce was not what they wanted and began to look for replacements for McInally and Mihajlović. At the end of his first season, McInally helped Bayern to the league title, and scored ten goals in his 31 league games, a respectable tally in his first season abroad. He also helped Bayern to the semi finals of the European Cup, where they fell to AC Milan, despite McInally's goal in the second leg in Munich.

In the 1990–91 season, McInally was now deemed a reserve at Bayern (Mihailjovic had now been sold), but he was regularly given a run out in Europe, where he scored some goals in the early rounds of the European Cup. Bayern were willing to let him go, and Chelsea came in for him, but McInally turned them down, preferring to fight on in Munich. This season, he only played 7 goalless games in the league, and was unable to help Bayern to get past Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup semi final, despite a battering ram cameo performance in the first leg in Munich. This season was effectively McInally's last as a top level professional, as he began to succumb to injury.

Platt at least went for a decent amount of cash which enabled BFR to build a new team.

And...you'd said that we'd seen the best he had.  We hadn't.  He was still at his peak when we sold him, and did a decent job for Bayern Munich.

But that team in 91 was really shit and need completly rebuilding, and Doug wasn't full of cash,so BFR realised he had to cash in on Platt, who at the time was the best player in England.

I think a real Judas is someone who doesn't give a monkeys when they're wearing the shirt,Platt did pretty much keep us up that season. I agree that he has become a bit of a knob in later years.

we had seen the best he had! he went off to score one in 3 and retire virtually 18 months later! i dont remember him not giving effort and i dont remember him deeming himself more important than the club, if you do then thats up to you, if you view his move as a treacherous act then fair bleeding play to you!
He always talks about villa as his club and enthuses totally about us when he is on telly, and i dont ever see him in the bracket as hodge, bosnich et al!

McInally retired because of injury, not because of form.

The point I'm trying to make is that McInally is lauded as a hero, and Platt accused of being a judas; yet they both did the same thing - move abroad when an offer came in.  Platt was a hero on the field - bigger than McInally I'd say, and ultimately Platt's move bought us a brand new team.  McInally's move might have cost us the title in 89/90.  Certainly, we wouldn't have bought Cascarino had we had him.

Just because Platt doesn't kiss our arses on telly; doesn't mean he's a judas.

I don't understand why Platt and Southgate are being mentioned on this thread. Platt carried the team for a couple of years and was sold to fund BFR's squad and Southgate, even after admitting he wanted to leave never gave less than 100% for the following year. Although it was stranger he left us because he wanted to "win things" and pitched up at 'Boro.

Maybe not a judas, but Paul Mortimer could certainly fall under the 'prick' catagory.

His half-brother Dennis also did his best to upset the board in the immediate pre-Lerner years - he was right most the time, but
antagonistic sometimes.

I am willing to help Curtis Davies achieve this status.

I dunno, I'd err on the side of saying that the fella was a genuine talent, I feel that I saw enough in the first season back in 1988 to feel he was genuine talent, then again not having him as the powerhouse target seemed to free us up to play the expansive football style which was such a joy to watch the season after Mac left.

Would it be fair to say that Mac leaving freed us up to take advantage of the creative movement that Cowans and Platt demonstrated in 89?

His first season was in division two, when he spent most of his time either injured or falling over. Then we had the August-Christmas of 1988, when he was great, and the rest of that season, when he wasn't.

I feel i need to stick up for Southgate. He had ambition for the club, that was not matched by the management at the time.

I still remember playing against him during the 25th anniversary of the European Cup win when the 1982 players did a lap of the pitch. Southgate applauded them all around the pitch, whilst our squad of the time largely ignored them.
