We've mentioned it before and it's with us this Saturday:
www.nonleagueday.co.uk
After much prevarication, our chosen game is Causeway v Coventry Sphinx at Stourbridge's ground. If you fancy an afternoon out, see you there or you could go somewhere else. There's plenty of choice.
-
Might go to Bloxwich United V Bustleholme. If I do I'll buy a drink for anyone else from H&V that attends.
-
Shepton Mallet v Bridport. KO 3.00 Old Wells Rd. Come on the "Mighty Mallet" See you there !!!!
-
I should be at the Causeway game.
-
Shepton Mallet v Bridport. KO 3.00 Old Wells Rd. Come on the "Mighty Mallet" See you there !!!!
I went to their ground in 2001, has it still got that old, rickety corrugated iron stand and the bit of cover made out of a couple of old lorry trailers?
-
Stafford Rangers v Stalybridge for me, Sat 3.00 (!!!) kick off. :)
I'm talking bollocks - Rangers are away to Droylsden!! Back to the drawing board. :-\
-
Fantastic idea. I think I will do this.
Do people think it's stupid to wear a villa top?
-
No. I'll be wearing one.
-
That's good then,
-
I'm going to Causeway v Sphinx.

Or Maidenhead Utd V Bromley, 15:00. I'm planning on going to watch them this season at least once, even if the ticket will cost me the same as I paid for Villa-Everton on Sunday.

-
I'm at Eastbourne v Darlington...the great escape begins.
Incidentally, for any south of the city - one local non-league club in need of a boost are the newly-formed Bromsgrove Sporting - created by fans after the sad and bitter demise of one-time Conference club Bromsgrove Rovers. They hope to be playing at the old ground eventually but are starting off with home games in Mid Comb 2 in Studley.

Having in inbuilt distain for Pelsall Villa, the clan may be partaking in Rushall vs Glapwell this weekend.
-
I will be attending Bromsgrove Sporting v. Chelmsley Town @ The Beehive Stadium Studley. It will be Sporting's first home league match (mid comb Division 2). Hoping for another home win after last Saturday's 2-0 v Stretton Eagles.
-
I'm looking at Stalybridge v Gainsborough, supporting Gainsborough obviously. I'm currently texting around possible companions, don't fancy it by myself. The best bet is a Burnley fan who likes his non league.
-
A campaign that started in a small way on Facebook, the brainchild of QPR and Harrow Borough fan James Doe, has really gathered momentum, and we at the FSF are more than happy to lend our backing to a worthy cause. We’ve even managed to get the support of Conference sponsors Blue Square Bet who were keen to get involved, but right now you’re probably asking ‘What’s Non League Day (http://www.fsf.org.uk/non-league-day/)?’
In short, the Premier League and Championship, like all top divisions across Europe, schedule fixture breaks for international weekends. This previously meant that fans of teams in those leagues could attend their national team’s matches (or watch them on the telly) and not miss any of the action at their club. Now that England will be playing some of their matches (like this week's game against Bulgaria) on Friday evenings, however, most fans have nothing to do the following day. There’s no match to go to, and no England game to watch. The idea was conceived, therefore, to encourage fans whose teams were not playing on Saturday September 4th to get along to their local lower division side instead, and thus the idea of Non League Day was born. Pretty simple, really.
http://www.fsf.org.uk/non-league-day
We think that given the current financial climate within the game, clubs in the lower reaches can do with all the support they can get. Teams away from the top divisions, particularly further down the pyramid, way past the Conference North and South, often only continue to exist because of hard-working volunteers giving up their own time and energy. We have to stress that the idea behind this isn’t trying to get fans to change their allegiance, somehow convince them that non-league football is purer or more worthy of their support than the upper reaches of the league, and nor is it any sort of protest at ‘modern football. It’s just a great opportunity to promote grass roots football to the masses, and remind people that there are small clubs in their neck of the woods that could really do with some support.
With tickets and refreshments at a fraction of the cost you’re used to paying, as well as the ability to watch a match while standing, and even the opportunity to swap ends at half time, why not ‘adopt’ a team for the day? Who knows, you may even enjoy yourself and return from time to time on international breaks, midweek cup fixtures or when you’re not making a long away trip.
Blue Square Bet have offered to sweeten the deal with a couple of cracking prizes on offer.
Get along to www.fsf.org.uk/non-league-day/ to register your support for Non League Day (including the club you support, and who you’ll be supporting on the 4th September) and be automatically entered into a free draw to win a VIP package for two to the Conference play-off final in May (including pre-match meal, drinks and the best seats in the house), along with £50 worth of free bets.
Two runners-up will also receive a pair of tickets to the final each, and £25 of free bets.
You can’t say fairer than that.
Get along to www.nonleagueday.co.uk to find your local fixture this weekend - with more than 500 matches there's bound to be one near you.
-
What a fantastic idea. I might well do something for this.
Was very sad to discover my old home-town team Ashford Town (of the Kent variety) had gone to the wall this summer, although they look like they'll be back next season. Will see if there's any decent looking games in my area on Saturday.
-
We already have a thread on Non-league day, a few of us are heading to Stourbridge to watch Causeway, others have already said they will be going somewhere local to them.
It's a very good idea, I'm glad it has gained the momentum it deserves.
-
As I'm working on Saturday I made my contribution last night in the mighty Southern League Prem derby, as Halesowen Town (the mighty Yeltz) turned over Stourbridge 2-0, Stefan Moore got the first!!
-
Hoping to have a wonder down to Triplex to see Pilkington XXX v Coleshill Town.

Might be Cambridge City vs Stourbridge. Top of the table clash

Come on Darlo! Went to see them at Cheltenham in the Vauxhall Conference (if that's what it was called then) when He Who Will Be Called Brian was manager. Won in the 83rd minute by someone called Eyres (I think). Ran over to HWWBCB at full-tme and shook his hand. I later cut off said hand and it is now pride of place above the fireplace.
I was nearly going to go to Barnet - Cheltenham this saturday but nobody else fancied it. So, I won't.
-
Pilkington XXX v Coleshill Town
2 minutes from my place.
I used to play for Triplex as a kid and was asked to play for Pilkington not too many seasons back. I was surprised to see how poor the standard is now though in the Midland comb.
-
Indeed, apologies for not appending this to the existing thread. Still, if people are heading out and about and have already heard of it then that's great news. The more the merrier. Anyone who wants to register to potentially win themselves some freebies is more than welcome.
-
Think I'll amble along to Dulwich Hamlet. Although Sutton United and Kingstonian are at home too.
-
Dulwich Hamlet for me too.
-
Looks like Altrincham v Kiddermister for me. Quite looking forward to it, not been down Moss Lane in ages.
-
I will be at Stourbridge for the Causeway game.
-
I know it's not non-league but I'll be at Bradford vs Port Vale!
-
Mickleover Sports v FC Halifax Town - Now that is football
-
Hilts
Dulwich Hamlet for me too
Fisher Athletic are my local team ( Fisher FC now). The Bash Street kids from Bermondsey are the traditional bitter rivals of Dulwich "Hamlet" ( a hamlet in Brixton??).
Don't they ground share now?

I had to look all this up because I've never followed non-league football but yes I believe they do. Dulwich Hamlet are at home on the Saturday and Fisher are at home against Ringwood Town on the Sunday.

Obviously some sort of historical reference. "It were green fields ere when I were a lad". But it does sound cosy for Brixton doesn't it?
A couple of years ago, I discovered my Great-Uncle McDonald was born on Brixton Hill. Which was a shocker as i didn't know any of my family were from London and now live in Streatham. We found the road on an old map and the prison has been built over it.
-
Brixton prison. Christ there's a place. The only place I've been in where the officers really haven't got an idea what's going on on any of the landings.

Anyone going to Romulus v Goole AFC?
-
As I'm working on Saturday I made my contribution last night in the mighty Southern League Prem derby, as Halesowen Town (the mighty Yeltz) turned over Stourbridge 2-0, Stefan Moore got the first!!
I was there too as Stour are my lifelong 2nd club. Your mighty yeltz didnt get a kick till they were 2 up. Then didnt get a kick in the 2nd half.......still I suppose its goals that win games eh.
-
Anyone going to Romulus v Goole AFC?
I used to play for Romulus.
Maybe this should have gone in the "Interesting Facts" thread.
-
I'm going just down the road to watch the Mikes (Boldmere St Michaels) play Lutterworth Athletic in the FA Vase. I was a choir-boy at the church 64 years ago (everyone say Aaah). Only £3 for pensioners - I might become a regular next season. You never know.

Connor Gater is an ex pupil of mine and played in my first school team. I believe he plays for Halesowen now?
-
Fisher Athletic are my local team ( Fisher FC now).
I remember Cheltenham playing Fisher at Whaddon Rd many moons ago in some silly final. They played the National Anthem on a record player and then some Fisher fans decided to have a fight in the main stand!
-
Might be Cambridge City vs Stourbridge. Top of the table clash
That's where I will be on Saturday. Poor night for Stourbridge last night, a lot of huff and puff but no end product, fingers crossed for a return to form at the weekend.
Connor Gator has played full back this season for the Yeltz and arguably had his best game last night at Amblecote.

I used to go to Fisher and Dulwich on alternate Saturdays for the local paper. The days I didn't go, I had to rely on Fisher's first team coach and a few regular fans to give me an account of the game so I could write it up (it was like pulling teeth).
One week, when I'd been at the Hamlet, the paper went out and I was flooded with calls asking why I hadn't written anything about `the fight' at Fisher's game. It turns out that Fisher's team captain, overhearing some disparaging remark or other, vaulted over the fence and kicked shit out of one of the opposing fans. The game was delayed for about fifteen minutes, by a 22-man brawl, the player was sent off and later banned for about a dozen games. It was a genuine front-page story. But no-one had mentioned it to me. I have never liked Fisher since.
-
Mickleover Sports v FC Halifax Town - Now that is football
Which league are Halifax in now?
The Evo-stik Northern Premier League.
-
I love some of the sponsors you get for some of the leagues.
I might sponsor one in my own name. That would be great.
-
Hi Guys,
Hope you dont mind me registering.
I was hoping to advertise the National Non League Football Day this sat when most of the top clubs are not playing.
Is this ok just to post the details of our club and the reduced ticket prices? we are running a promotion that if you have a season ticket or stub from any pro team its £4 in
We are just outside walsall not too far from sutton so quite a few villa fans in our area.

I have allways had a soft spot for rushall olympic so i might take you up on the offer to watch the game.

Rushall Olympic are taking part in the NON LEAGUE FOOTBALL DAY this saturday, if you come down to dales lane with a pro club season ticket or normal ticket you can get in for £4, or £2 cons. plus 1 ticket which gives you £1 off another game

Would be great to see some Villa fans there as it really is a great little club. Please give this site a mention if you do come along.
We are on facebook (search rushall olympic football club) and twitter - website www.rofc.co.uk
Cheers guys - all the best for the season and manager

Most importantly i should say you can have a beer and take it out onto the pitch which is rare nowadays, food available all match ko normal 3pm
-
Drink beer and get on the pitch? I didn't know you were advertising for players.
-
ROFC Dan, do Rushall still have that horrible jobsworth of a secretary who got Tamworth chucked out of a Birmingham Senior Cup game a few years back because of his anally retentive knowledge of the minutae of the rules?
It was about -2 and chucking it down that night, I caught a horrible cold and it counted for nothing!
I've not forgiven him you know!

I'm off to watch Croydon Athletic myself. Hopefully I'll be offered £3.50 to spill my tea in the 27th minute and become part of a global sporting controversy.
-
I think there needs to be a non-league post-match thread on Saturday afternoon. I am weirdly excited about all these fixtures
-
Sat 4th September
Division One
Causeway United vs Coventry Sphinx
:)
-
Lot of excitement about non-league day mentioned on local radio up here!
-
If anyone fancies joining our merry band, we'll be at Amblecote for Causeway v Coventry Sphinx. Train from Moor Street, change at Stourbridge Junction for Stourbridge Town. Likely pre-match at the Duke William, about five minutes walk from the station, on the other side of the ring road.
-
Dulwich Hamlet for me too.
I'll probably pop in The Bishop just down the road from the station pre-match about 2pm.
-

Excellent Pub Selection Sir. The Duke used to be a very ropey boozer now transformed by the owner of the Plough just down the road from me. If it's sunny get on the Stowfords!
Perhaps worth noting that the 2 pubs nearest Stourbridge's ground are now shut. The Moorings Tavern (slightly down the hill) and the Royal Oak (opposite). Which I imagine now makes it a toss up between the Mitre and the Duke for the nearest.

The Oak was open on Tuesday night. The Moorings used to be a great pub many years ago.
-
Anyone going up to Guiseley to see Redditch play?
-
Consett vs Bedlington Terriers for me.
Yep, Yep, Yes, Sirree.
-
Dulwich Hamlet for me too.
I'll probably pop in The Bishop just down the road from the station pre-match about 2pm.
Should be at Dulwich Hamlet as well as they're playing another one of my old home-town teams, Burgess Hill. Might not be able to make it to the Bishop though. Will be wearing an '82 Villa shirt if anyone from here spots me.
-
Esconsed in Duke Wiiliam, Stourbridge. May get to the game.
-
At Pilkington v Coleshill. Surprised at how vocal the players are. Nice to sit watching a game on the grass with a pint
-
8 of us have swelled the crowd to 43. Still 0-0.
-
Probably 70ish here
-
2 0 to Causeway. We've been accused of stealing the match ball.
-
Red card and a penalty here. Referee is good
-
Not bad standard, Quite surprised. Defending is better than I thought
-
3 0. Police in attendance.
-
Thugs! 3-0 here too and I'm probably the only WMP member here
-
Just back Shepton Mallet 3 Bridport 5 Had a great day, bring on the next international break. Yes,going to do this one again !!!
-
Back in the Duke. 3 0 to Causeway. A good day out.
-
Dulwich Hamlet 1 - Burgess Hill 2
First impressions when I arrived at EastDulwich station was the opulence dripping off the walls. A mere 10 minute train ride from Streatham. Surely here the revolution will begin. I was shocked that the pubs were full on a Saturday lunchtimeand with smart-looking young ladies.
The ground was very pleasant and the game interesting. Dulwich had a very commanding captain at centre back, who impressed me. At half-time I went to the bar and loved that I could take it into the stand. Spotted a chap with 2 children in Villa shirts and spent most the half talking to him. Steve Rowell, if you're on here, nice meeting you and your sons.
I will definitely go back with friends.
And is it an FA regulation that every single ground in the country has to have an empty half bottle of vodka on the toilet floor?
-
Just a few details. £4 to get in, 50p for a mug of tea (proper mug) !! Nice Clubhouse with Sky Sports etc Loads of families there. great atmosphere. One other thing........ Shepton Mallet have a Caretaker Manager in charge..............It follows me round I'll tell yer !!!
-
I too was at Dulwich Hamlet. Didn't see you, Small Rodent, sorry! Did have brief chat with same bloke with kids though at the end.
If anything could sum up the joys of non-league football, it would be the moment in the first half when a Burgess Hill player launched a free kick miles over the bar, and setting off a car alarm somewhere in the car park behind.
Good fun though - may well go back again. Not sure about Hamlet's pink/purple kit though. It was like rejected Hogwarts colours
-
i went to altrincham v kidderminster with a few of my harriers supporting mates.it was abit of a 6 pointer already with both clubs in the bottom 2 places.they won 2-1 all the goals in the 2nd half, game was abit scrappy, the winner a penalty.
crowd was just over 900 with about 100 away fans.
it was £5 to get in if you were a season tkt holder of any premier/football league club so i used my villa season tkt.it was £13 otherwise.
a good day out i enjoyed it,going again next saturday at home against hayes & yeading.
-
Interesting location, Ascot Utd. You have to tramp over half the racecourse to find the football ground. Anyway, to the match report:
Ascot Utd 3 Staines Llammas 0
The final score flattered the home side in a match of incident at both ends. It was Staines Llammas who did most of the pressing in the early proceedings, though they had little change from a well drilled Ascot defense. However Staines should have scored when their attacker failed to connect with a low cross that came in from the right. Then 2/3 of the way through the 1st half, a breakaway attack from Ascot, a parried header and Paul *didn't quite catch his surname* netted the rebound.
The last 15 minutes of the 1st half were slow apart from when Staines gained a free kick just outside the penalty area. The resultant kick brought a fine save from the Ascot keeper, who then saved again when a header came in from the following corner.
Half time: 1-0
The Ascot clubhouse served a decent burger.
As the teams ran out for the second half the Ascot keeper was complemented on his first half save. He did not react bringing accusations of him being a miserable bugger.
Second half and Staines again pressed for an equaliser, and were again wasteful in attack. As time ticked down they became frustrated and a few narky fouls came into their game, causing a couple of pauses when players went down injured. Then as the crowd were looking at their watches, an Ascot corner was headed home by Paul Magrotty [sic].
That was 90 minutes, but injury time gave the opportunity for Ascot's star player, Siam 'Turbo' Macyntire, to run on to a long pass and smash it past the keeper for the goal of the game.
Final score: 3-0
Attendance: 197.
-
That was NOT the match ball, I found it round the back of the toilets.
Causeway were never three goals better than Coventry Sphinx, but they took their chances.
Causeway 'til I die!
-
Consett 1 - Bedlington Terriers 0
Entrance £5, programme £1, pie and peas and a can of coke £2.20.
The only WAG in attendance, with practically the whole of the stand to choose from, decided to sit 3 seats away from me (new haircut you see) - and then spent the first 45 mins texting her friends. The Consett keeper had shorts that reached below his knees and the Terriers no. 2 wore a padded rugby helmet and employed salty language.
In the second half Consett hit the woodwork five times, thrice in as many seconds. The bloke next to me when asked said that Trevor Benjamin was the one with the yellow boots. Except the one in the yellow boots was too young and completely the wrong colour to have been the Tumbling Bear's Leicester replacement. But still I believed.
The attendance was 187: many of whom smoked cigarettes.
-
Stourbridge lost 3-0 to Cambridge City. All the goals in the second half after the Glassboys had more than matched their hosts. A missed penalty in either half for both teams, Rowe missing for Stour at 0-2 late in the second half.
Decent enough ground but not much atmosphere, the ref was one of those little bald, officious men who seem to annoy just about everyone.
WM were in attendance doing reports for their non-league special, they were also at the Grove where Halesowen lost 6-1 to Hemel Hemstead.
-
I was at the same game as Nev. I enjoyed it very much, as did my son.
You only realise when you go to a non-league game and stand behind the goal what bollocks goalkeepers talk. Shouting absolute crap at their team-mates, non stop.
But the Stourbridge goalkeeper kept his side in it first half. Three very good saves including the pen.

As a newcomer, what was your opinion of the Stourbridge supporters?
-
Normal for non-league.
But friendly enough.

They are friendly. But you'd never call them normal.
-
If you think the fans are odd you should meet the people who run the club.
-
The Pilkington keeper spouted absolute shit all through the game, then the ball came near him and he did an air kick, I was pissing myself.
-
Croydon Athletic 1 Conchord 3
A very good away team easily beat high flying Athletic. 4 memorable goals of which one was an absolutely fantastic own goal. Indeed we muttered after each one "Worth the £8 admission on its own".
And at the end the home team stayed on the pitch to say they were all off as they weren't getting paid. All very sad. We felt like we were intruding on private grief so we left.
-
Croydon are the team owned by the bloke behind the "no ball" scandal aren't they?
-

They are indeed. There was the odd shout of "no-ball" from the crowd behind the goal. I think they aim to play on with kids for the next few games.

If you think the fans are odd you should meet the people who run the club.
They get money out of me so they can't be that daft.

-
Crowds at levels 1-4 (Conference to Southern Premier) were up 12%, so the exercise was well worth it.
-
Next International weekend is 9th October.
Anyone?
-
I wouldn't mind going to another non-league game.
