Title: Premiership League Table
Post by: alanclare on August 30, 2010, 11:34:06 AM
Does anyone know the last time that a team in the top four of the Premiership had a negative goal difference?
We have.

I remember when the did not publish the league tables until after the 3rd match of the season.  Now pressure is put on clubs through the media after only one game.

How many times have you heard 'worst start in 20 or 30 years' this season when the difference between drawing and losing or winning and drawing would make a massive difference to a teams position.

Had we drawn against Newcastle, we'd be......4th. So, made no difference then, except to piss everyone off.

If we had scored from the penalty and converted our early dominance into a win, it would have been crisis, what crisis.  How one result can change the perception of things.

To be fair when the result is a 6-0 vs a newly promoted team, its not hard to see why one result changes the perception of things

Everton finished the 2004/05 season in 4th place with a minus goal difference.

I remember Gregory ( who else) complaining after one game that the table was published with us as "VILLA" and given the obvious need for Alphabetical order he said it should be "Aston Villa".

"That could cost us a European place"  he moaned.  :)

I knew that someone with time on their hands would find the answer. Well done! Up to the standards of good old Trent Poly.

I was somewhat surprised when I saw that our dire start to the season resulted in fourth. For all the talk of a crisis at VP there are still 16 clubs who have started worse. Cripes!

Just had a call from a whinging, petulant Blue nose.

"How come?" he says, "That you have no bloody manager, you've lost 6-0, your forwards can't score, you sold your best player, you have signed no f..... players and you are in CRISIS and.. "

"Yes?" says I

"and, and we think we are having a good start but, but, but  you f...ers are STILL above us in the f...... league?!!!!".

The league table never lies.

I think maybe it does at the moment in terms of us and Everton certainly!

I agree the league never lies, but its whwre you are after 38 games gives the true picture.
Wherever we do finish, wouldnt it be wonderful if we were still above moneybags city?

If we do finish above Man Citeh, that will be a good season, they have to be finishing in the top 4 this season, they have too many good players not to.

You'd think so. But I suspect they'll take some time to 'gel' as a team and, before that happens, many toys will have been thrown from prams.

Man city have been given every chance to gel this season. They don't play an away game against any (after Spurs 1st game) of last season's top 10 teams in their first 20 matches.

I woudnt be surprised if they were near the top at xmas.

But you can only play 11 (or 14 maximum) every game.  And too many of them are egotistical.

Look at Real, buying quality players year after year, yet couldn't get into the last 8 of the Champions League.

On paper our first 6 games are pretty 'easy', so we've also had a good chance to get some points on the board.  Performance aside, we've dropped 1 or 3 points, depending on your perspective, but we also have Stoke, Bolton and then Wolves the next three games.  I think any new manager would be happy with that to get things off and running with!
