Title: Petrov speaks.
Post by: andyh on August 29, 2010, 09:44:32 AM
Mods - can you shorten the link if necessary please.

So, our captain seems to be blaming all and sundry for our poor start this season (hope he has looked at himself in the mirror).
Not what I expect from a captain.

Feck me, that's fighting talk.   :-\

The malaise at the Club has just reached a new low with that interview Stan, idiot.

It's difficult to disagree with anything he says though, isn't it?

We do need to strengthen, it is a disappointment to lose your player of the season and we have conceded too many goals.

Putting the ball away from 12 yards would have helped - knob.

Maybe, but he's the Club Captain so perhaps if he feels that way it's better not to telegraph it to the entire nation through the press.

It's the deafeatism that irks me the most.

Its all very honest and a very true.
It is time to do all the talking on the pitch now though.

As the penalty, he aint the first and he wont be the last to miss a penalty FFS. He didn't do it on purpose.

Exactly. He's the captain of Aston Villa. Captain. Show some backbone son.

He's also mons captain and as expected his comments reflect that- with a new manager he will be lucky to be in the team judging by his abysmal displays in the last year, mon isn't there now to choose his favourites and petrov must be worried!

"You could see how outstanding he was in his very first game for Manchester City. We've lost a great player. That's the way football goes. When you get offered money like that you will get some chairman who accept it and others that don't.

"Unfortunately, we accepted it here. James Milner is not the first and won't be the last. Good players are wanted by good teams."

Is that not a pop at Randy, I think this is perfect excuse to make Dunne captain.

Heskey hitting the rebound into the floor with an open goal at his mercy was even worse than the penalty.

Didn't Petrov say after the first game against west ham how great is was to be playing under KM? Nice to play something different other than counter attacking football. Sounds like the players are just ask fickle as fans LOL!!
What is the point of Petrov saying all this? Yes we need players, thats very astute of him! Bloody genius!!
Don't you think the small issue of having a manager in place first is a little bit more important though? Surely if we go out and buy players now it's shows the board are doing dealings, that could cause problems with any new potential manager who might see that as the wrong way to do things. MON has left us with a small squad. We can't add to it. We have to deal with it until January. Those players out there, need to role their sleeves up and give us villa fans something to be proud about today. Not come out slamming the current situation. It's tough for everyone but it will be put right and soon.
Get a grip Petrov and learn how to take a penalty!

Pop at Randy or not .... its Kevin Mac's decision while he has the gig whether to drop Petrov as captain.

What worries me is that the team in Vienna and at home on Thursday smacks of the team in Moscow and so does the message it sent out.

The fans laid the blame at O'Neil at the time and although I'm personally glad he has gone as I believe he was to blame for many (not all) of our current woes, it seems that the real decision to field a weakened side came from on high.

If this was the case then where were O'Neills principals then ?

I haven't got a problem with this but don't kid the fans ... in the Moscow year it was almost as if we were duped into thinking for some time that we were in it to win it.

At least this year the intention was laid down at the very start

Yowser. And we thought we were depressed about the week. It seems to me that he feels he has a responsibility as club captain to be honest about what he feels about the club at the moment. If that's what he feels about the role, then you can hardly say he hasn't fulfilled it.

He his the captain he should be motivating the players not speaking about the club in this way.

Not very good to say that, you can think what yo like but as the club captain yo need to lead. I read the linked article too from KM, he lives in a village witout a pub, how strange.

Whether he should have said it to the press is one thing, but I can't fault him on the substance of what he said. Personally, I would prefer players to speak their minds - as long as they are accurate - than merely come out with platitudes, or say nothing at all. A bit of plain speaking, particularly at a time like this, doesn't hurt, in my view.

When the going gets tough...............

The tough act and the weak just talk.

Don't get me started on my pet gripe about the team - spineless (strength down the middle, not necessarily how the players play).

A captain is there to lead.  It doesn't matter about the actual reality, honesty does not come into it, a true leader will put all of that to one side and be a driving positive force.

I couldn't give a stuff about this honesty, saying it how it is, no blame culture etc., etc.  Why don't you just raise the white flag now, Petrov.  Rant over.

Whilst not happy that our captain will speak to a Scum newspaper so candidly, at least it shows that he at least realises the problems at the club.

It is very difficult to disagree with anything he has said.
He should however have said it to Randy and Randy alone.

Would this be tolerated at most other clubs... absolutely NOT!

It is the captain's responsibility to 'rally the troops', not be first to the lifeboats!

To be honest he wouldn't even be in my team (if we had decent replacements) let alone be captain!

NRC is a better defensive midfielder but Petrov has a better all round game.

That said, it is a bit rich to see him talking about the top four as though he would have a chance in hell of walking into a top four side's first 11! If we finished top four, he'd probably be one of the players we'd replace.

As much as I don't think he's worthy as a starting place in the team, I can't see an awful lot wrong with what he's said to be honest. It seems to be a farily accurate summary.

Petrov's level is Bolton/Blackpool, and has been  for some time. Get rid.

So on one thread he is accused of failing to show any passion or leadership and here he is being criticised for speaking out. If he was not passionate or didn't care he'd be content to earn his fat pay packet and not come out and say anything. Indeed, he is probably speaking for his team mates who may have voiced serious concerns about things behind closed doors. Other captains speak out like this far more often and perhaps even more strongly. See for example John Terry and Steven Gerrard. No one would deny these two are true leaders albeit total arseholes.

Also, it is from the tabloid press who have probably gone out of their way to sex up his quotes to turn a non-story.

So give the man a kicking for caring.

There was a bloke on radio 5 live last night a so called Villa fan and he was sayin that he & his son have season tickets but didn't go yesterday out of protest? What! What a prick I thought.

Petrov is showing a similar attitude here for me, OK we lost Milner, This  same guy on the radio was also saying that HE would have told Milner no way your staying and let him see out his contract, in reality this is ok but footballers are a completely different entity from you & me. It would have been damaging to let Milner stay at the club. I think Villa got a belting deal, we got our money back and a really good player in Ireland. Someone who I think will be better in the centre than Milner over time. He for me is the kind of player we have been missing since Merse.

We also have Young. In my opinion we can build around these two players and if some of the kids we have can reach their potential they can be used in the team as well. We have money in the bank so what I would do is get a really good central midfielder to play alongside ireland and then I would show Petrov the door!!
