Does any of the past shirts worn over the years bring back any particular memories for you?
Players, matches, good/bad times, trips, occassions etc?
Only got the shirts upto 2006-2007, & i'd love it if anyone can remember anything from 1874 :o!!
-
Have got that poster up in my PC room here at home.... only 5 shirts from 1970 and up to last season missing out of my collection
-
I remember being particularly pleased that the hummel 89/90 effort returned to something approximating a Villa shirt compared to some of the monstrosities that had gone before.
The Umbro 1992/93 and Reebok 95/96 kits seemed to strike that balance between contemporary and tradition, a lead we would do well to follow now.
Some of our more recent kits are the kind of thing you'd expect from West Ham. The first nike effort was decent though.
-
The Hummel away shirt.......5 across and 3 down........or 3 down and 5 across either way! My first shirt and I adored it and still my fave!
-
Have been considering for a while (brought on moreso by the current seasons kit being late/shit) whether to buy a replica european cup final shirt. Noticed the online club shop selling for 30 bucks, or english pounds if you will, but having only been born in 87, might look a tad strange. Not sure
-
The away shirt introduced in 1969/70 is one i always remember. The first sighting of it was for a pre-season friendly against the Italian under 21s at VP. Everybody booed at first when they come running out thinking it was the oppostion.

The umbro shirt's of 1990-1993 european night's beating inter milan at home.
-
The 1992-93 bootlace kit still our best top ever.
Having a "Saunders 9" Muller stripes top and it being really snagged within a couple of days, bump into a door handle and it was bobbled for life. Then the first time my mum washed it the 9 and the name were discoloured permanently.
Buying the blue 1995-96 away kit and being looked upon in disdain by other Villa fans.
The sky blue AST kit will always be associated for me with the unveiling of Stan Collymore.
Many many memories.
-
The yellow MG one I can only remember because we wore it in a PSF against Walsall and lost.
-
The 1999-2000 always reminds me of Carbone's goal against Leeds United in the FA Cup.
-
The 1999-2000 always reminds me of Carbone's goal against Leeds United in the FA Cup.
It also reminds me that every player who wore it wore one that was ten sizes too big for them. Alan Wright looked like a clown.

Does anyone know where I might be able to buy these-

I have owned all of those shirts and my mother chucked them all out, claiming "there isn't enough room for them".

I've got the two Umbro ones. Send me a PM with your offer.
-
I might have the middle one stuffed in a draw somewhere, remind me after 1st September when I get back from my Highland tour.
-
I was looking for the Mita Copiers shirt 91/92 season about 8 or 9 years ago on EBAY.Got one from a bloke in scotland...on opening the package i noticed the crest was embrioded ...i taught Hey it's my lucky day..turned round the back to reveal a stitched Umbro no. 5 with the small football league tags..i had won the lotto.A mcgrath original.Has since being signed on the back and placed in a frame with a signed programme [v man city 7 dec 1991..the cover of the programme was of GOD himself] and takes pride of place in the house...and it cost less then a tenner on EBAY.I guess the seller had'nt a clue about legends.

You are one fortunate bastard, mate.

I remember being mightily impressed by the 92-93 lace up shirt. It looks bloody dreadful now.
-
I remember getting the 81-82 away shirt to go to the final in when i heard we'd lost the toss for kit. The short lived yellow top with the badge in the design that was used for the end of the '91-'92 season reminds me of the quarter final at Liverpool. First time the team wore it (actually, it might have been the last time too) and there were five of us in the car on the way up wearing it.
-
I went to Glastonbury in 2002 and on the Sunday made my way to the nearest village to watch the World Cup Final. In the first pub I went into, there was a guy wearing the 1994 green Muller top. I went up to him and asked him if he was a Villa fan and he said "no, I just liked the colours".
So that horrible shirt reminds me of Glastonbury.
-
I loved the yellow shirt we wore at Anfield in 92-93, we only wore it twice I believe but it was a beauty (I went through a phase of buying Villa shirts and the odd European ones, it's no wonder I am skint now).
-
I also went through a phase of buying Villa shirts what am i saying i am still buying them now and i'm 41 i would buy any top with the Villa badge on gives me pride to wear the shirt.
-
Used to wear the 1981 away shirt for tennis matches @ that time in the Warwickshire league which was nice,
-
The yellow shirt we wore in a cup game at Crystal Palace, no idea when but Bruce Rioch was playing and I think we were second or third division and they were in a division/s above. 0-0 draw and we won the replay.
A time when the woman I was with at the time was trying to convert me to supporting my then (and still) local team, Palace. She had no idea, went shortly afterwards.
-
Yellow one (2 down 5 across) reminds me of The Sty in 1970, it was about Easter time and we hadn't won away all season and were on our way down to Div3.
I was only young but can still clearly remember the yellow kit and Bruce Rioch scoring with one of his trademark left foot rocket shots. Other things I recall is being with a gang of older lads from our street - it was the last derby before crowd segregation came in and you just paid at any turnstile and went in. We ended up in the top corner of the Kop next to the Tilton, and although I can't remember now whether we were in with mainly Villa fans or their lot but I do still remember the Villa fans around by us chanting "Hateley is a Reject".
On the subject of football kits though, if any of you do have a fascination with old kits (all clubs not just ours) then try and get hold of John Devlin's brilliant "True Colours" books. Book 1 covers Premier Lge teams as of 2006 and features all Villa kits from 1975-2006, and Book 2 is clubs from the lower leagues. His website is superb too...

I am compiling a major book about fans memories of all things Villa. I hope to include celebs and current and ex-players, as well as us the fans.
Would anyone mind if I use their postings in the book? If you have any more good stories please contact me at simongoodyear@soccerbiographies.com

Absofuckinlutely!!! That and the away shirt before that, also by Hummel. It was the sky blue and white striped one that looked similar (but better) to Coventry's at the time. The home one that season looked like Southampton's from that year.
-
I went to the Villa shop today and got my retro jersey from 1982-83, I already have the white one so I now have the home one too... how happy I am, some nice bargains at the shop!
-
This photo 100% proves a point I have said on here for years, but only now can I show it ##Villa should NEVER EVER EVER wear yellow - Yellow = Small Heath
Just have a look
1970-1974 - oh look we were relegated to Div 3
1985 - 1987 - oh look we were relegated to Div 2
1991 - 1993 - although slightly misleading, only ever wore ONCE and we got dumped out the cup by Liverpool and swore we'd never wear it again
2003 - 2004 - nearly relegated and stayed up on the penultamate weekend if I rfemember right
2005-2005 - nearly relegated under O'Leary - and would have done the next season.
And there your honour is the evidence for the prosecution !
White is Villa away and nowt else !

agreed, my brother had one (15 at the time) and now my 10 year old's found it, waiting to grow into it

I've still got mine,it did use to give off a funny smell, probably to do with me being a teenager at the time.
I wish they'd bring back the away shirt of 83,white and yellow stripe, worn away at Spartak Moscow.

...
That sounds like the 71/72 Div 3 promotion season and the year after we made it to the final. I still hate Tottenham and jam.
I didn't go to Selhurst, but the replay was 2-0 and played in an absolute downpour.
It was Blackpool (also top flight) for the next round with everyone convinced we'd go all the way this time. Tony Green tore us a new one and we lost 4-1.
Previous highlights of the run included an entertaining marathon with Wrexham which ended up with a second replay on neutral ground (The Hawthorns). Those were the days.
In the first replay Harry Gregory (captain, he didn't last long) got so upset with Tommy Hughes he kicked one enormous lump off him, much to the delight of the home fans.

I remember buying that shirt in 1984 in a sports shop in town for about a fiver and convincing myself that a large was the right fit. Played five a side in it for a bit and my last recollection of it was decorating in it and it being splattered in pistachio green...
has anyone ever seen the classic 76-81 away shirt with the diamonds on the arms for sale?
Now that was a shirt

The 2002-03 home kit just saved my bacon. Decent looking classic Villa kit but I rarely wear it as the collar is too snug fitting.
Last night I enjoyed a memorable evening with a lass from the office but she went to town on my neck and I woke up with a rake of lovebites. I wanted to avoid being the focus of gossip when I went in this morning and luckily this top covered just about covered all incriminating evidence. Thank you Diadora!

I love that shirt, wish we could go back to something similar.
-
I don't think many of our home shirts have aged too well. A fair few of our aways are still absolutely gorgeous though.
I think the 07/08 (5-1 v SHA) will be a future classic. As will the away from that year, both gorgeous.

Just bought the yellow third shirt from 1993 on eBay. Only £25, but the Umbro logo is a bit faded.

I gave my shirt to a mate from Scotland, I wish i'd kept it now as it was a beauty.. it was probably him who sold it on ebay.
