Kevin Mac's programme notes from the OS:

Good afternoon everybody and welcome to Villa Park for our first Barclays Premier League game of the season against West Ham United.

It is due to unforeseen circumstances that I have been given the honour of assuming the role of caretaker manager of the football club.

This will be the first game of a long season in which we will be trying to replicate some of the success of the past few years.

Having been at the football club for 15 years and now having been given this responsibility, I intend to do everything within my power to start the season positively.

I was sad and disappointed when I heard about Martin O'Neill's resignation. He was a very good manager for myself and was supportive and generous in passing on his knowledge to the coaches in the reserves and academy set-ups.

In fact, last pre-season he gave me the opportunity of working with the first team, which provided a valuable insight.

Obviously, I have known most of the players here in my capacity as reserve team coach but working in close conjunction with him then and throughout his four years at the club will have helped me in identifying the strengths of the squad now.

Our pre-season was somewhat staggered by the late arrival of some of the players from the World Cup but this gave the opportunity to some of the younger players to impress. The experience of playing alongside the senior players will hopefully enhance and speed up their development and in time, I hope, they will make as great a contribution to the team as those who have been regularly involved for some time.

Today we welcome West Ham with their new manager, Avram Grant, and his backroom staff which includes a good friend of mine, Kevin Keen.

The Hammers, like ourselves, have a proud history and their present group of players will demand our utmost respect and attention during this afternoon's game.

We will need to be very focused and our concentration levels will have to be of the highest order.

Allied to your vociferous support, this will give us the best opportunity to compete and try to win the game.

Finally, I know what kind of atmosphere you are capable of generating here at Villa Park and I hope this afternoon will be no different from the first minute to the last.

Your loud and positive support could make a vital difference to our team.

Quite a few youngsters in the squad today, just shows the faith Kevin Mc has in the players he has been looking after.

If asexpected WHU play 5 across the middle, it makes sense, I just wonder where the goals are going to come from with Gabby out. Saying that, I'm going to stick with my 4-1 prediction.

Come on my Villa boys!

Good side. Like it. AY playing the free role sounds good. He and Carew link well, so I'm hoping we play some good stuff. I've no worries about Milner. He'll always give 100%.

The hammers side looks pretty poor to be honest. We should be winning this game, if the players perform.

Fair enough Milner's in. He's atop player, and no point sitting him out if he can contribute. It would be a complete freak if he suffered a nasty injury, and he's generally been very healthy throughout his career.

Looks like we'll play 4-4-1-1 with Ash in the hole behind Carew, Albrighton and Downing switching flanks with Milner and Petrov in the middle. I expect Petrov to play a slightly more advanced role than he did under MON, but mainly a holding position. Good to see Clark get the nod. He's got all the qualities to make it.

Let's roar them on!!!!

Great to see Albrighton given the nod along with Clarke.  Quite surprised to see Milner in the team. I do hope, despite everything, the fans are behind him and he gives his all.

Just hope we get through injury free.

Nicely done by K-Mac. He seems a top bloke who's coming off a very difficult week. I believe we'll see a much more open Villa display, free of stress. It will be a nice little gift for the new boss.

I was thinking that. Interesting that he has selected Weimann ahead of him

I thought Fonz looked a little tired against Benfica when he came on. He's not had much rest really when you think of it and he's still very young. Weimann has had a very good pre-season, so it's a good choice. Plus, nice to know we've got some options amongst the reserves.

Would be interesting if Kevin gets the assitant role to who ever takes over wouldn't have to worry then for all the new coaching staff needing time to get to know the players.

I think if he didn't get the main job, the new bloke will bring in his own people. Kevin Mac has a job for life down there along with Sid, and Tony McAndrew, so he'll just go back to developing the reserves. Something he is quite brilliant at.

My thoughts exactly. I think once he's had a taste of first team management it'll be be difficult for him to step back down to the Reserves.

Very much so. Not that big, but he's brave and willing to have a go. I've liked what I've seen of him in the reserves and in this pre-season.

We're absolutely battering them. They look a team in trouble too, poor, poor squad. But we're doing as we should, and taking them to the sword.

Every player for us looks like they're on a fresh start, playing with freedom, and wanting to play. Luke Young looks like his old self. Clearly he was at odds with Martin.

Milner's been excellent. I'll miss him if the deal, as expected goes through. Our movement looks so much free-er than last year. Having one person playing off the front man really helps open up the space, and the fullbacks are bombing on with freedom. Petrov is making us tick nicely. Good stuff.

Carew looks a little rusty, otherwise he'd have a hattrick by now. I expect him to net before this game out though.

What a start. Still problems, lapsed into old habits during the middle of the half (I suppose he's had less than a week to work them out), but the opening 15 minutes was so enthralling. And unexpected! I was expecting to tune in, see some decent moves maybe, slack defending perhaps, heads down, but no. What a start.

Clouds well and truly lifted.

That is some of the best football we''ve seen at VP in a long time. I said in the pre-match thread I expect Petrov to play a little further up, and he is. Because he has it in him. I thought the two young kids looked very assured indeed. West Ham don't like us running at them and the nice thing is when we scored we didn't just sit back. We went looking again.

ps. Very happy for Marlon Harewood. I thought the criticism at him was unfair during his time here. He didn't come in to save us, he came to be part of things. I hope he helps Blackpool this season. Great start by him.

I wouldn't say it's our best performance in two years at all.

We've been good, but considering West Ham have been atrocious, us looking good hasn't been tough. We're sitll suffering from poor retention of the ball, and the same old 'if it doesn;t work, try it again and again and again' tactic of banging our heads on the wall. Just give it to the wingers to whip it in.

It's not been as tedious as we were at home last year, by any stretch of the imagination, but we've been far from brilliant, there's a lot of improvement to be had.

Echo all of that, except a slight point - Petrov's not further forward, our huge amount of possession means he's more able to make late runs while basically playing most of the time as a holding player. And what a late run.

Just joining this thread now, after watching the first half near the beach in Sri Lanka. Well, what can I say? I don't want to get carried away or anything, but under the circumstances we've started very well indeed. Don't the players look like they've had a massive weight lifted from their shoulders? Doesn't the football lack a certain huff/puff, replacing it with verve, drive and - dare I say it - freedom? Those players look like they've been liberated from some kind of tyranny, and long may it continue.

Match thread is slow because everybody is at Villa park!!!

Fucking ell...What a half! I am here in Brazil, 11am kickoff, cachaca to wash breakfast down with, on a low bandwith internet, that was dead 24 hours prior to the game, but got backup 5 mins before kickoff. (I go write later, what i want to say here - as I dont want to jinx the game)

Sitting on the veranda with 30 degrees, beer cachaca, and wife serving me anything i shout for...2 great goals...And Albrighton involved in both...that shot for the first goal was fantastic. I think it would have sverved into the post, and maybe into goal...the workrate from Ashley Young...never ever seen him do so much all over the pitch...what a star!...And even Milner...(happy that crowd is aplauding him...)

COME ON YOU VILLA!!!

He is being given licence to come further forward which you rarely saw in the past few years. He was told to sit back and allow the likes of Barry or Milner to move forward. It created a big gap in our midfield which the better teams exploited. What I mean by further up is that the midefield is playing a lot more tighter and so it keeps the pressure up.

And as for our best display, it may not be our best, but West Ham being crap is down to us making them look that way.

I haven't enjoyed a half of football that much for quite a while.

Good to hear support for the Chairman and support (or certainly no audible boo's) for Milner.

Echo all of that, except a slight point - Petrov's not further forward, our huge amount of possession means he's more able to make late runs while basically playing most of the time as a holding player. And what a late run.

Couldn't be righter.

I think Ireland can replace Milner in this system quite well if he brings the right attitude to Villa Park. The added £18m will be nice too.

One thing I've found very interesting is the full backs not only getting forward but coming into inside-right and inside-left positions. It's working well.

Because he was a twat?

I'm sorry but that is completely wrong. Albrighton like some other kids at Villa have come through with great patience. You simply cannot level youth development as being something MON did poorly. He has given the kids a chance and they have to be ready to step up. Albrighton played in every pre-season game, so you couldn't be more wrong with that statement.

Hope that's not Milner's last appearance in a Villa shirt.

I really, really don't want him to go, £50 million at least!!!!!!!!!!

Why did O'Neill never play Albrighton?

Because he was a twat?

I'm sorry but that is completely wrong. Albrighton like some other kids at Villa have come through with great patience. You simply cannot level youth development as being something MON did poorly. He has given the kids a chance and they have to be ready to step up. Albrighton played in every pre-season game, so you couldn't be more wrong with that statement.

Apart from the fact they virtually never saw league football apart from the occasional sub appearance in his time at the club?

Downing MOM????? He's played well, but Albrighton has been incredible

Bannan for Albrighton - what a rousing adulation is he goes off.

One star leaves (Milner) and another one is born (MarcA).

The problem being he's a winger. Who do we move into the centre, Young or Downing? Both pretty lightweight, and far from good alternatives to Milner in the centre.

Downing man of the match? Sponsors must have been too busy eating their free grub after the first goal.

We could play 4-2-3-1, with reo-coker and petrov and then downing, young, albrigton in front of them.

Absolute garbage, Albrighton first, closely followed by Milner!

Albrighton, Clark, Bannan - three academy grown players, all 20 years old or so. To have them all playing might suggest a team in trouble having to get the kids out to play.

But clearly this is not so. Proud history, glowing bright future.

Because they are kids and you can't just throw them in. You have to blood them gradually and he has. Could they have been given a little more exposure? Possibly. But they are youth players just learning the game, and loan spells at lower league clubs is the way to go. Albrighton last season when he did play was nothing close to this. That's down to a good system knowing when to introduce them. MON would have taking advice from Sid, McAndrew and KM over this. The kids coming through are a testament to the whole operation.

O'Neill could have used the youngsters a lot more. His unwillingness to make changes in games was one of his major faults.

Sorry TV but I don;t think Albrighton would have got near the team today and for most games this season if MON were still in charge.   I recall he had a pretty decent pre-season last year but barely got a look in. As with many other things O'Neill was over cautious in his use of the talented youngsters like Delfounso, Albrighton and Delph.

I agree that it's down to our set up, which is very different to MoN getting any acclaim for them. Personally I would have liked to see Albrighton, Fonz in particular get more game time in the league last season. MoN primarily stuck with his chosen few, hence my slightly tongue in cheek "twat" comment. At numerous other clubs their blooding would have started sooner.

Absolutely superb performance.  If Carew had the right boots on we'd have been looking at 6 or 7, and 3 off the woodwork.

Absolutely brilliant performance today by Villa. I haven't been so excited in a while. Great pace and they were attacking from the getgo.

5 things I took away from this match:

1. KM should have a couple more chances to show this is his job to lose.
2. Albrighton needs to be in this line-up every game. He gives them chances and speed up front that Carew and Young (plus Gabby when he returns) needs.
3. Milner can go and I hope he knows from today that Villa will be just fine. Especially if/when we get Ireland.
4. Clark should play - I would love to see a backline somehow of Dunne, Clark, Sidwell and ? (not Warnock).
5. Why does everyone rate Warnock?? He has bad field perception, looks clumsy and is slow.  I honestly think we can do better at LB.

But I refused to cheer any of the goals, because they were scored by the three players I do not like. If only it had been a Heskey hat-trick.

to be honest, if it was ireland playing instead of milner today, he would have been in heaven, it was his type of game

so if we keep playing like this, and milner does go, and we do get ireland...
