Title: Most memorable opening day of the season.
Post by: Andy_Lochhead_in_the_air on July 24, 2010, 01:02:55 PM
It doesnt have to have been a fantastic game, just the day that really sticks in the memory perhaps because you were a certain age.
For me, it was watching our first ever game in the third division at Chesterfield. I was 13 years old, Saltergate was rammed to capacity and there were Villa fans everywhere.
You realised that we were very big fish in a small pool, and the next two years never ceased to be amazing and exciting.

1993-94 vs QPR at home, 4-1, four stunning goals and QPR's wasnt bad either. Baking hot sunshine, great debut from Andy Townsend and the belief going home that we could win the league that season. Ahem. The league cup as it turned out!

I'll annoy a few and do a Tamworth one!
2002/3 and a 3-0 win at Havant and Waterlooville, it was such a stroll in the sunshine that I just knew that we were going up that season.

Upper tier front row seats for that one. Was the first game that came to my mind too - what a day that was!

For me, 1995, Villa 3 Man Utd 1.
I'll always remember Savo running to the Holte with his bandanna on, taking it off and throwing it at the crown. Only for it to land apart five yards infront.
Should have known at that point, it was the sign of things to come

Yes. Moreso because my brother and I missed a coach to the game and drove up instead.
The coach (and two others) was subsequently turned away by South Yorkshire police and escorted back to Brum during the game.

Big Ron back at his old club, a hostile reception like you've never seen.
Beelzebub as their manager.
2-0 down and on the ropes.
Win 3-2, marvellous. What a great day.

Here's another vote for Man U 3-1. (I think the worst opening days were the home defeats to Notts C and Sunderland when we were league and European champions respectively)

If i'd been at Hillsborough i'd have said that, but I was on my way back from a holiday somewhere.
Strangely, QPR ('93) edges out Man Utd ('96) for me. On the back of that '92-93 season, I was convinced we'd go one better and win the league after that game. Andy T and Guy Whittingham were the missing pieces of the jigsaw. Ah well.

Of the matches I've attended I think they've both been said:
AWAY - Sheff Wednesday 1991
HOME - Man Utd 1995
The worst is Spurs 1986

1995 for me, great first half, beautiful sunny day, just a shame I left our season tickets at home and having got half way to Brum (as now live in Bristol) was a mare, panic set in resulting in a trip back to get them, was not a popular chap for a couple of hours that day trekking back to Bristol.....but made kick off and the lads did us proud that day..

Wednesday '91 (I don't remember it being as hostile as I was expecting but that could be my memory fading), followed by Albion '83. I seem to remember Ipswich '87 and Forest '89 we appeared to take a few more fans than they were expecting. At least I got into the first one.

Too right Ian, 4-0, a really hot and sunny day, and the taste of things to come that season with a really vibrant attacking performance. I may be confusing things here but I think it was 0-0 at half time.
From memory the crowd was decent too, certainly over 40k.

A 2-0 home win against Preston North End in August 1974. There was a bomb scare. Nobody took any notice but as a nipper, I wasn't too happy about it. It was also Ron Saunders first league game in charge.

Forest in the 90's. Drew 1-1, baking hot day, me spewing 8 pints of bitter up on the away terrace, Villa wearing black away shorts with home top (horrible combo it was). Couple of trainloads penned in at the train station for two hours and sent home again for some reason. Mate missed last train home and had to get a taxi, we got off at wrong station (Tamworth) and I can't remember how we got home to Erdington from there.
