Title: The last signing you got excited about?
Post by: VinnieChase84 on July 22, 2010, 05:49:08 PM
With MON lack of transfer nous when bringing players in, it got me thinking about the last time we had a high profile/signing that was exciting!?

Ive been a Villa fan since i was 7 in 91 and for me the stand out one for me was Stan Collymore. shame that obviously never worked out, other than that there was Angel, Ginola and Dublin.

Stewart Downing as he was an England regular and had a decent reputation. I'm easily pleased.

A lot of signings I was enthused by turned out to be a bit shit in the end. See the already mentioned Fat Dave and Mad Stan and add Barndoor Baros.

I thought the Young/Carew double swoop was exciting and a sign of things to come.

If you'd told me then we'd be signing Heskey and Downing two years later I would not have believed you.

I remember being convinced that Ruud Van Horse Face would sign for us to play alongside Nilis at the time! Shame injury hit him (was at Ipswich that day and you could hear the crack in the away end) as he would have been quality for us!

Milan Baros

Ripped the teams the Czech Republic played in Euro 2004 apart and was a genuinely exciting striker at that point. Even scored on his Villa debut.

But the one I got most excited about was Stan Collymore.

Angel. Record signing at the time. South American. Had seen him briefly for River Plate on the telly a year or so before we signed him and thought he looked class. Remembered the name, because...well, Angel.

Since then we've not signed anyone exciting in terms of an unknown, nor any real superstars. We've known of them all, be it young up and comers like Ash, or bigger stars turfed out for various reasons, like Baros and Carew who both came with reputations.

Angel I would say.

Getting Carew for Baros, of all MON's signings was the one that made me sit up and think, good bit of business.

Milner was probably his best signing but then again DO'L also signed him for us so....

I was actually happy with Stone... had been watching him at forrest and thought he would do good....ahh who was the other fella playing amazing that season for them....Ian woan?

Anyhow...erm for me... Collymore i really thought was going to be amazing... Dublin impressed me... merse i thought would do good things.... then again i was happy with sasa Curcic...Ash and carew coming in jan a few years back got me going.. and i thought Maloney then would be good too (still think he could have been)

luc nillis i have to say i thought was a real wow signing... shame how it ended.. well started really....and i also was interested in Angel heard good things and cost a lot for the time....

but Bosko Balaban has to top them all.... what a star he turned out to be

Angel because he was something of an unknown, and a bit adventurous for Villa to pluck someone out of South America. Especially from such a famous club like River Plate. Collymore or even Deano before that I suppose. We don't tend to do flashy deals do we?

The last one has to be Heskey! Lol simply because we were flying 8 points in front of Arsenel,
Carew was injured and I was fooled into thinking Heskey would turn Gabby into a goal machine!

How wrong we all were moaning about playing 451 back then, when it was so effective!

I recall being bilious at the signing of that fat over the hill red nosed git. In fact it was the most angry a signing as ever made me. The abuse I had hurled at him for years and now I would be forced to applaud his antics. I had to sit on my hands for a couple of years because i still hated the bloke and i'm not sure those around me would have appreciated me giving the sod stick when he was playing for us. I'm sure he was wearing a girdle too!

Last time I got excited by a signing......... Hmmmmm......... Possibly Carbone before that Dean Saunders.

Not me. I didn't want us to buy anyone, because we would have had to keep playing 4-5-1.

Still quite excited about Delph, if he recovers fully he'll be some player.

Was excited about Young, Carew, Milner. Was really excited about Petrov after his debut at West Ham, but he's never looked as good since.

No signing MON has made got me excited. Some of them have gone on to be very good players, but at the time of the signings I either didn't know enough about them (Young, Carew) or theyve gone on and improved greatly (Milner)

The last signing that got me really excited was probably Merson.

Dont forget Oscars brother Hector Fallone too, who I think got a couple of run outs in the reserves. Combined with the Docs pronouncement that 15 year old Jimmy Brown was already virtually guaranteed to become captain of Scotland and one of the all time greats we were set to rule the world.
What a shame Oscar didnt make the first team and play alongside Barry Hole.

Ashley Young. There's an old boy drinks in the local, name of Space Cadet, he's a Watford supporting ex-town planner whose conciousness got lost midway through a u-turn out near Barnard's Star.  Anyway he swears blind that Young will be the greatest player the world has ever seen.  So that's at least 316.42% Gospel.  Fact.

The original post asks about "the last signing" you were excited about. For me it was when MON signed Ashley Young and swapped Baros for Carew and they both appeared together as Little and Large in their new Villa shirts.

I haven't been disappointed by Ashley, I hope he stays and gets better and better. Actually, I haven't been disappointed by JC either, when he hits his form he is a menace and I still believe he has got a few more goals left in him at B6, especially if he gets challenged by  a striker that can score a few goals.

Carew - I remembered seeing him play for Lyons in the Champions League. Thought he would be that elusive 20 league goals per season striker we've been missing since Peter Withe (mind you I thought that about JPA, Collymore, Gabby and Luke Moore too!)

I was very excited when we signed Stan Collymore from Liverpool. I went to the pre-season 'friendly' at the Hawthorns which looked as though it was gonna be an embarassment for us until he got the ball near the half way line and just homed in on the Albion goal and slid the ball into the net. After that, I honestly thought we'd cracked it up front. Real shame he never fulfilled his obvious potential at Villa.

Nigel Reo-Coker another, added bite to our weak midfield. Still a massive favourite

Carew, Young, Dublin, Merson, Angel, Hadji, Collymore, Townsend, Staunton, Houghton, Ginola, hell even Draper are signings i was well chuffed with when we made them, but the one and only signing in over 20 years that was really exciting, i.e. a player that was as good as virtually anyone in his position in the league, a decent age, and no baggage was Saunders.

excited - Angel - just watched video clips over and over again from River Plate and was really looking forward to seeing him play.

most disapointed was Djemba Djemba, he was a huge flop at old trafford and even worse at Villa

Deano, Merse, Angel.
And though it could be a thread all of its own, 'the player we signed who has over delivered' then my vote goes to Merse for running the show, week in, week out. Pure quality and audacious with it. Though I was excited, I did wonder at the time if we were getting him too late. How wrong.

I honestly, truly and categorically believe him to be the single most over-rated player we'd ever had. Run of the mill game against mediocre opposition, he was a star. Big game it was Merse....Merse...anyone seen Paul Merson? And a fifth round FA Cup tie at home is not a big game.

Is it sad that I got excited at the signing of Richard Dunne?

I was annoyed at Downing's signing (at the time) because I was confused as to why MON would sign a player that's got a broken ankle and will be out until the end of the year.

David Ginola.

Then he was constantly benched. Waste of expectation.

Wow, Well I never, how two people can see things so differently. I'll go away now and come back when you can think more clearly *wink*

Well don’t get so surprised badluckeric because I pretty much agree with DW. When Merse wanted to turn it on he was great, but I remember him receiving more than his fair share of moans and groans from the fans. And rightly so, on a number of occasions he just didn’t show up and put in a shift.

I do think he was amazingly talented and the one player who on his day we miss more than any other. But his day wasn't that often.

You could be talking about Dalian there.

…and isn’t it sad to think that Merson was ten years ago, and the only player since who has been able to get the crowd excited and provide us with a flash of brilliance has been Ashley Young. Or am I missing somebody obvious?

They were different class. Merson on his day was very good. Dalian on his day was the best.

With the obvious exception of Mark Kinsella.
