I do realise I'm setting up a bunch of Forest and Leeds quips here!
-
Whatever happened to the team from round this way that proudly played in the first Inter City Fairs Cup campaign? I think they were known as 'The Blues'?
-
Deportivo La Corunya (sp?)
-
Deportivoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
-
Alaves have sunk without trace since being runners-up to Liverpool in the 2001 UEFA Cup.
-
I really don't remember KV Mechelen winning TWO European finals in the late eighties either! Still; at least it wasn't Coventry or Wimbledon.
-
Deportivooooooooooooooooo
Was that the night some bloke had 'the horn' in The Trinity Road? ;-)

1974 EUROPEAN SUPER CUP FINAL - Not played
Qualifying teams: Bayern Munich v Magdeburg
Magdeburg is a city in the former East Germany. To be fair, they did well to even qualify for this final since the favoured team of the Stasi (secret police) were Dynamo Berlin. The next best teams were Dynamo Dresden and Lokomotiv Leipzig. It wasn't uncommon for the Stasi to rip the hearts out of teams that had built up nice little squads in their quest for dominance.
Interestingly, if you like that sort of thing, Dynamo Berlin still exist but in the regional Oberliga, having gone bankrupt a long time ago. They petitioned the DFB to get stars on their shirts for winning more than 10 titles but were refused as the DFB refused to recognise their claim on the now defunct DDR-Oberliga.
There is no surprise the final went unplayed - West German and East German teams rarely met in competition due to the potential for defection and political tension. Also, many in the DDR would have supported Bayern because of their hatred of the DDR regime.
-
And off the top of my head, how about:
Saint Etienne
Lens
Auxerre
Athletic Bilbao
Espanyol
Red Star Belgrade (and Partizan, for that matter)
Aberdeen
PSG
Napoli
Brondby
Young Boys Berne
-
Oi!! Leave my Bilbao alone, they're still regularly in Europe.

My mistake, I meant Real Sociedad.

Dukla Prague
CSKA Sofia (we could have played them in Rotterdam- Bayern were 3-0 down in the 1st leg of the Semi at one point before pulling it back)
Honved
Ujpest Dozsa

Munich 1860- didn't they play West Ham in the 1965 Cup-Winners Cup Final?
-
Munich 1860- didn't they play West Ham in the 1965 Cup-Winners Cup Final?
They play in the same stadium as Bayern. That must be like Espanyol being forced to squat in the Nou Camp.
Ever heard of The Slap? Around the time 1860 were playing in this final, a young Franz Beckenbauer was playing in a Munich youth tournament, preparing to sign schoolboy forms for 1860, his favourite team. Then in a game against the Lions, one of their players slapped Beckenbauer. He said at the moment he stopped wanting to play for 1860 and joined Bayern instead. Then went on to win three European Cups and a World Cup, amongst others, while a Bayern player.

Anderlecht used to be quite big as well, didn't they? Allegedly, their president was a bit of a dodgy character.

Legia Warsaw

Stade de Reims?

Dynamo Berlin was a great name..

St ettiene were huge in the late 70s in France- almost nothing since their golden era.

Foxbase Alpha was a very good album, and i quite liked that Turnpike House album the other year.
-
Dukla Prague
We played them in the 2000/2001 Intertoto under the name Marila Pribram. They hit the skids when the Czech Army withdrew their support.
Anyway... Honved or Kispest Honved as they became
-
What happened to Honved?
-
Stade de Reims?
-
Gornik Zabrze
Being of Polish decent, I always kept an eye out for them,
Remember when we beat them 2-0 in the UEFA cUP 77-78
They had a mountain of a centre -half, Jerzy Gorgon, I think

Honved

Haven't Marseille been in the Champions for the last three years and just won the French league to qualify again?

I thought exactly that when I heard them mentioned the other week.
In fact, didn't they dump Man United out of the European Cup? And weren't they the last team to beat them at Old Trafford in European competition for years?
I may have imagined the last bit.
EDIT I'm back from google. They knocked them out of the UEFA cup in 1985 en route to reaching the final, but didn't win at Old Trafford.

Did I once see Man Utd play Hereford in a European Cup Match, bizarrely played on TV on a weekday afternoon.
-
Close it was Wrexham.
Just checked on Statto.com and it was Wednesday 7th November 1990.
Don't know the time though.
-
Castilla (AKA Real Madrid reserves)
In 1980 they managed to get to the Spanish Cup Final, where they were beaten 6-1 by... Real Madrid.
However, the first team also won La Liga, which meant that the following season Castilla were the Spanish representatives in the Cup Winners Cup. They were beaten in the first round by West Ham.

Hadjuk Split. As pointed out, mnay of those we remember from years ago are eastern block teams who folded or changed name. Red Star Belgrade are now Crvena Zvezda and still turn up in Europe. Tennis Borussia Berlin?
-
I'm not sure whether I am impressed with your collective knowledge or whether you need to get out more.
I remember Villa getting beaten by a Deportivo team containing an unknown (to me) Rivaldo and being absolutely disgusted.
Probably the best ever away performance I have seen at Villa Park was Celta Vigo. Again a team of unknowns (apart from maybe Salgado) that ripped us a new a-hole. I vaguely remember villa fans applauding them they were so good.
Happy days...

They were always Crvena Zvezda, I believe. It was just that in the past the English media used to anglicise their name but now they tend not to.

That's right, Rivaldo wasn't there when we played them but they had a few other Brazillians such as that bloke who played til he was about 40, Mauro Silva was it?

Vitoria Guimaraes.
Remember seeing Peter Withe score a hattrick against them in a 5-0 win (1983?)
Never heard of them before or since

Hafnarfjordur are in the Champion's League qualifiers I think, won their league.
As did MSK Zilina.

You get the drift.

Colne Dynamoes

I hadn't heard any mention of Lech Poznan for ages but I've just Googled them and it seems that they have regularly qualified for the UEFA Cup/ Europa League in recent years.
-
Fortuna Sittard
As I was writing this, I was thinking have I made this up ?
Freddie used to play for them if I recall. So did a few other big stars who played for PSV when they were young.
A few people have mentioned Aberdeen. They were in the Europa last year (Knocked out by some jokers early on) and the year before they beat FC Copenhagen 4-0 to get in the knockout stages where they drew with Bayern Munich before being absolutely thrashed in the second leg.
-
Vitoria Setubal
-
I remember most of these teams from my excellent fold out subbuteo catalogue from the 70's illustrated with all the teams you could buy - oh and Racing White, PAOK Athens, AEK Athens, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Cagliari (Anglo Italian cup regulars) were probably included.
-

I think PAOK (Salonika) and AEK Athens are still considered part of the 'Big Four' in Greece. Olympiacos have tended to win the Greek league over the last decade, but I think Panathinaikos won this year.
Think Cagliari are top flight?
Dusseldorf aren't and I've never heard of Racing White.

FC Valur (icelandic) in 1981, my first ever experience of a european tie at B6.

Royal Antwerp was mine
I've never heard of Racing White.
A Belgian team who I think played in Europe a few times in the 70's.
-
Dusseldorf aren't and I've never heard of Racing White.
Fortuna Dusseldorf are in the second division, but they have slipped as low as level four (Oberliga Nordrhein).
Little known fact, Fortuna Dusseldorf were once sponsored by German punk band Die Toten Hosen.
Didn't Racing White rename themselves as Molenbeek?
-
Vitoria Guimaraes.
Remember seeing Peter Withe score a hattrick against them in a 5-0 win (1983?)
Never heard of them before or since
Portugal's 4th biggest team, although there is quite a gap to the big 3. And Boavista, which gets a mention from somebody, went under a few years ago.
There was a great run of teams in my formative Eoropean Cup final years of the late 70s. Borussia Monchengladbach (sp?), Bruges and Malmo.

Ahh yes Mostovoi and Karpin led us a merry dance that night. Think Makelele also played for them at the time and Haim Revivo upfront who Gregory then became obbssesed with buying for the next 6 months.
We played them again in the Intertoto in 2000 (remember the ref?!) and Gregory then became obbsessed with signing Benni McCarthy for the next year.
They were in the champions league in 03-04 but the money run out and they're now yo-yoing between La Liga and Segunda.
In the 90s Paris St Germain were quite a major european team but I can't remember them being in any major euro competition lately.
-
I lived halfway between Coruna and Vigo in 05/06 and though I regularly went to Depor games, I bought a Celta shirt in admiration of their performance against us in the Uefa Cup. They finished 6th that season but have sadly been in decline since, finishing just above the relegation zone of La Segunda the season just gone.
Oh, and from Channel 4's early 90's Serie A coverage I do miss Igor Shalimov's Foggia, Thomas Skurahvy's Genoa (wiki says he owns a nightclub there now, fair play) and Cremonese's...whatever
good player they had.
Oh and the C.I.S at Euro '92 with Dmitri Kharine in those fecking tracksuit bottoms (not as bad as Kiraly's jim-jams but still..)
-
Napoli,what happened to those fellas.
Maradona left.

Kinda sad that on any one forum of the clubs mentioned in this thread, they could well be wondering the same thing about us.
Except for blose, the baggies and the dingles obviously.

R. Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium.
It had a brief spell of European success, playing the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup between 1958 and 1965.
Now languishing in Belgian Third Division B.

Back in European competition this season!
With the way Rangers are losing players I wouldn't put it past them to get CL football next season.
