Post by: Legion on July 07, 2010, 07:22:51 PM
From Pravda (http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/FootballNewsDetail/0,,10265~2086373,00.html):

Quote
Villa's stars return to training in the morning [Thursday] as they begin preparations for the 2010-11 season.

Martin O'Neill and his first teamers report back to Bodymoor Heath after their short summer hiatus.

O'Neill and his coaching staff will put the players through their paces, with the pre-season programme of matches firmly on the horizon.

All those competing in the World Cup - James Milner, Emile Heskey, Stephen Warnock and Brad Guzan - have been given additional time off to recover and recuperate ahead of the coming campaign.

Villa's media team will be on hand as the manager and players arrive and will bring you up-to-the-minute pictures and reaction.

We'll also bring you training footage on AVTV as the players get back to work in preparation for the challenges which lie ahead.

Villa kick off their pre-season programme with a reserve friendly against Basingstoke on July 18 before a trip to London Road the next day for a clash with League One Peterborough.

Then it's on to Dublin on July 24 as the claret and blue troops take on League Of Ireland Premier side Bohemians at Dalymount Park.

Villa then make the short trip to Walsall's Banks's Stadium for another friendly on July 27 before heading off to Portugal for the Guadiana Cup.

Villa face Feyenoord on July 31 and Benfica on August 1 in the three-team tournament before heading back to Villa Park for a prestigious friendly with Spanish giants Valencia on August 6.

Pre-Season Matches Confirmed

July 18: Basingstoke v Villa XI - The Camrose - 2pm
July 19: Peterborough v Villa - London Road - 7.45pm
July 24: Bohemians v Villa - Dalymount Park - 3pm
July 27: Walsall v Villa - Banks's Stadium - 7.45pm
July 31: Villa v Feyenoord - San Antonio Stadium - 9.15pm
August 1: Villa v Benfica - San Antonio Stadium - 9.15pm
August 6: Villa v Valencia - Villa Park - 7.45pm

When you look at the squad though there are only really a couple of other players who could've made it (Gabby and Ashley).

Exactly.  If Ireland, Wales, Bulgaria, Norway, Senegal and err Togo had qualified, we would have had loads more.

When it comes to the opening game to West Ham, Milner is unlikey to still be with us, Heskey we hope won't be and Guzan won't be playing.  So only Warnock is affected and he didn't get a kick in South Africa.

Given that, does in put us at an advantage against some of our rivals, as our players had more of a rest during the summer?

I'm normally quite relaxed about MON's pace in the transfer market.  Not only am I used to it by now, but I also agree with the patient approach to get the men you want as opposed to the 'kid in a sweetie shop' mentality.  However, with the amount of players likely/reported to be leaving, I do think we need to start the process earlier this summer.

Nice, and that is surely an aspiration for all but having 2 children means any aspirations are quashed by a duty bound requirement to spend money. Sorry to disappoint.

Gabby and Ash are very good compared with the shiite that went to South Africa however our best player next season once he recovers will be Fab Delph.

Apart from the lack of correct punctuation, you seem to be comparing our players to a branch of Islam.

We all make mistakes though, yes? That's why I try not to criticise people's grammar too much.

At the very least his versatility makes him ideal squad cover for both Warnock and any new RB.  I'd like to keep him, but if he wants to go then let him.

That's how I see it, John. We may sign a new RB but in that case, Luke is worth keeping to cover RB and LB (I'm assuming Shorey will almost certainly leave). Weighing it all up, I'd rather we kept Luke than had to shop around for full-back cover... again.

It's the poor sods who earn less than £50k a week that my heart goes out to.

If you're only on 25K a week you're hardly going to be putting everything into training are you, what with worrying about how much it costs now to fill up your Bentley.

Surely last season Carlos got into the right back spot and as he did well managed to keep it (Apart from the 7-1 thrashing at Chelsea where L.Young played)

Now there is a clean slate MON must start with the specialised players in their right positions?????

They do look a bit surly. It's hardly surprising given one of the team's top players is looking to leave and five or six are being pushed out. I wonder what will be the first domino: Milner sale, sale of one of the five or six, or purchase.

And re your signature, I'm not sure a lop-sided count in favour of 'out' is a bad thing. We could do with losing a few.
