Not sure if this type of thing hasd been posted before, but im sure I was at a game at Villa Park in the 92/93 season and Frank Mcavennie played a couple of games for us.
Was it against Southampton and he set up a goal for Dalian?
Can someone confirm this for my own sanity, and are there any other examples of a short lived Villa career?
-
Yes. 3 appearances made in 1992, no goals scored.

Ta,glad to know that im not losing it!
-
I often think the same about:
Paul Mortimer
Mark Kinsella
Emile Heskey
Peter Schmeichel (can't even remember how to spell his name!)
The wee Scottish fella from a couple of seasons ago whose name I can't even remember now
Kachloul (again, can't even remember how to spell it)
Hadjii (ditto)
Calderwood
And probably lots more!!!
-
The Scottish fella has to be Shaun Maloney.
-
Adrian Heath
-
I can't remember the guys name Rob Edwards? Rob Andrews? but he was a full back played a few games for us in 2004ish.
Zat Knight
Aaron Hughes
Carlton Cole
-

Ah thank you, you can genuinely see I had forgotten he ever played for us!
-
Tommy Craig
Andy Blair
-
Steve Foster <shudder>
-
Bosko Balaban
Ivo Stas?????
-
Robert Hopkins
-
Some of them were too bad or too Robert Hopkins to forget, but the most anonymous Villa players of my recollection are Adrian Heath and Habib Beye.
-
I can't remember the guys name Rob Edwards? Rob Andrews? but he was a full back played a few games for us in 2004ish.
I remember a game he played for us against Chelsea at home, not sure if it was his debut, were he gave one of the best attacking full back displays ive seen from one of our lot, shortly after that he was sold to Wolves for something like 300k
-
Trevor Hockey
-
Nil Lampty, and Naj Gharib sorry if spelling is wrong, also congratulations for the excellent work done by the person who has compiled to A to Z of Villa players.
-
Didier Agathe

Our Rob Edwards went from Wolves to Blackpool, so he'll be back in the PL next season
-
Steve Foster <shudder>
Was he that bad for us? We we sold him to Luton he was a hero down there,in a pretty good team a the time.
-
I don't have much recollection of Paul Elliott MBE when he was with us, though I see he played a number of games. We were very poor then (1985-7), so perhaps nobody really stood out.
-
Gilles de Bilde
-
Øyvind Leonhardsen
-
Alan Mcloughlin.
Better known for his stints at Pompey and Swindon, scoring the equalizer that put Ireland through to the WC in USA 94 and being part of that WC squad.
Came on loan to us in 1991.
-

He's another player that got better with ever game he missed. A distinctly average defender everywhere, once he was injured he became the English Franco Baresi.

I believe it was Dean Saunders who injured him. Chelsea fans always gave Deano stick for it.

I had no memory of him playing for us. He played in 1 ZDS Cup game.
-
Bernard Gallagher.

Emile Heskey.... Oh crap !

Came on v Luton at home in the league too IIRC.
We were already 4-0 up at that stage.

Malcolm Allen. I'm sure his debut was away at Leicester, and someone else made their debut that day. I still owe a bloke some money from that day, so make yourself known whoever it was that lent me the extra 50p or whatever it was to get in, having missed the cheap train and had to get the expensive one and therby using all me pocket money.

Mark Lillis made his scoring debut that day.
Malcolm Allen had a lovely tan.
-
Ta Lee - Lillis was my hero for a short time.

I seem to remember him going on a galloping run one game and chipping a 30 yarder onto the bar...
Jon Bewers - few minutes at Spurs
Gustavo Bartelt, watched him on the day he signed in a friendly at Bromsgrove and also a reserve game, cant remember if he played for the first team though.
-
Ronny Johnsen
Peter Schmeichel
Mel Pejic
Steve Watson
-
Neale Cooper.
Always seemed to be injured
-
Neale cooper. The "new" Graeme Souness was n`t he ?
Simon Stainrod.
Didier Six.
Good debuts then faded badly.

Ditto.
For me he is synonymous with Portsmouth.

I've got his autograph......

Barry Ansell, who Mark Ansell claimed as a relative, a brother I think.
I knew he played one game for us in 1967/68. What I found out only by looking at Jorgen Bolin's excellent site was that that one appearance was on Boxing Day 1967.
So what had Charlie Aitken been up to on Xmas Day, eh?
We lost 0-3 away at Cardiff. I wonder if Barrie Jones 'tore young Ansell a new one', as my dear old aunt used to say.

So that's where I read about the Mark Ansell connection. You posted this on Ian Robo's forum didn't you. Though curiously I don't remember seeing the bit about Cardiff and Barrie Jones, honest!
Nice contribution by Mark Ansell isn't it?
-
Harry Gregory. I think I saw him play.
-
Henrik Larsen?
No, not 'Henrik Larsson' but a Dane with a similar name.
Remember watching him in a reserve game at Walsall and err, that was about it.

Against Man Utd wasn't it. As I've said on here many times, he was the most out-of-condition player i've ever seen. It was a shame as he looked a cracking player in Euro '92.
-
Franz Carr and Carl Tiler.
-
David Hughes.
-
Tommy Craig - my least favourite player as a kid.
-
Michael Boulding
-
Probably mentioned but at the time it felt strange seeing Ginola in a Villa shirt and almost a decade on (scary in't it?) it still seems strange to think that he spent a year with us.
-
Drobny
Adam Rachel (Got to be the ugliest Villa player too)
David Hughes - fantastic debut (v Liverpool?) and then what happened?
-
Franz Carr and Carl Tiler.
Franz Carr scored for Forest in one of my early Villa home games. It finished 1-1.
Next I heard of him, he'd put us into the FA Cup semi-final.

I remember him managing Barry Town to relegation from the Welsh Premier League season during the 2003/4 season.

The first ever Villa game I went too. Not so long back, I found a little notepad in which I'd written a match report of that game. The eight year old me had actually used the pun "Carr drove his way through the Villa defence to equalise".

Not quite true (and I acknowledge my anorakness for knowing this!).
Hughes was manager for a short spell in 2003/4 during the season when it all went tits up for Barry, the club went into administration and all the players were ousted, Barry completed the season with a team mainly made up from players from a local works team. It was Colin Addison who was in charge when they were relegated though.
Hughes did then take charge the following season when they were again relegated.

Probably not the thing to admit but I thought the kit Forest wore that day rocked, with Shipstones Fine Beers as the sponsor. Probably 'cos it was red, and I don't think I'd ever seen a coloured sponsor before. Obviously I was blind to the Villa away kits of the period!
Nice pun btw. If I was eight and I'd written that I'd be chuffed. Actually, I'd be chuffed to write it now.

See, I would have looked this up before posting to check I was right, but I didn't expect anyone on here to have any knowledge of mid 00s Welsh football so I thought I'd be safe! I have clearly underestimated the Heroes and Villains population.
-
No, just Dave Cooper!
-
Fabio Ferrerasi
Neil Cutler
Paul Chrichton
Vacalav Drobny
-
Gilles de Bilde
didnt he have a goal disallowed against man utd on boxing day 2000? and those lot scored in the last minute?
also other names that deserve a mention
Ghariab? cant remember the correct spelling. An israeli defender
lamptey
kiraly
leonhardsen
allback....though he scored a few crucial goals to keep us up
simon grayson
-
Matthieu Berson
Eric Djemba Djemba
David Unsworth
Joey Gudjohnssen
Richard Walker
-
Dean Spink
Scott Murray
-
John Rowan.
We played away to Watford early in the 1969/70 season and lost 3-0. The team performance was quite possibly even more abject than O`Learys attempt to have a team play a game of football at Doncaster Rovers.
It was John Rowans debut for Villa, it was the only 1st team game he played. The following season he re-surfaced at......Watford. Dont think he played many games for them either.
-
The way he swans around you could add Platt into this, I suppose.
-
Harry Gregory. I think I saw him play.
Harry Gregory was a real jovial cockney type that we bought from Charlton about 69/70.
Me and my mate were about 12 at the time, saw him in the Trinity stand at a reserve game and he was really larking about, you could hear his laughter echoing through the old stand with just a few hundred people in it.
My mate said he was laughing his head off so much it would come off and roll down the steps. After that we couldnt take him seriously, we still used to laugh about our daft teenage joke years later.
-
David Unsworth....................tit!!!! Didn't he feature in one pre-season game before being transferred to Everton after only joining us a few days/week earlier from West Ham? I loved the way John Gregory took the piss and said Unsworth didn't realise were Villa Park was and joined by mistake or something along those lines.
-
I think John Gregory also claimed that David "henpecked" Unsworth had to be home from training in time for his tea & that he thought Birmingham was "somewhere near Bolton".
-
David Hunt
Steve Sims
Neal Cooper
Nigel Callaghan
-
Steve Hodge.
Yes, I know he did, I just still can't believe it (bangs head against wall).
-
Mark Burke and Martin Carruthers spring to mind. My claim to fame is seeing Ivo Stas score for Villa in a pre-season friendly at Witney in 1991.
-
I know its at the other end of the spectrum but I'll add Paul McGrath.
-

I think this was the only time we have ever had the best player in the world in a particular position play for us in modern (i.e. since 1945) times.

Probably because after every Reserve game at Walsall, he was necking a few pints of Gas Water down his neck in the "Players Lounge"
-
David Farrell
-
Scott Murray.
Who?
-
Scott Murray.
Who?
Sporcle claims another victim!
-
Scott Murray.
Who?
Indeed
Sporcle claims another victim!
-
Found out today that DJ Campbell played for our Youth Team.
-
Before Chesham Utd, He was with us as a trainee but was not offered a professional contract. That was way back in 1999 or 2000, can't really remember the actual year.
-
Don't think anyone has mentioned john Fashanu yet - truly a low point for the club. Every photo of him seems to be in that disgraceful red green and black stripe muller abomination of a kit too. did he only ever play in away games?
-
Daryl Duffy

No. I remember him having a physical battle in a home game with QPR. He was taken off in the second half. The cynics suggested it was only to get his teeth fixed so that his TV career wouldn't suffer.
-
Didier Agathe we had him on loan did'nt rate him.
