Finally decided that I don't like it.
Too much blue, not enough claret.
Stupid place to put the star.
Why not put the star between the AV-FC? That was obviously too difficult to come up with?
We should go back to this...

I've never liked it, but I've now grown used to it. Still prefer the circular version.
-
I like it, you took you're time deciding you didn't like it.
-
I'm not keen on the round crest. I prefer the shield style and a complete lion.
-
Maybe

Would have looked better?
-
I think you're right, but where will we put the second star when we win the Champions League next?
-
It's still too wishy-washy.
-

We wont be alive to care about that.
-
Never been mad on it.
*The AVFC abbreviation
*The different fonts
*Light yellow on a light blue background
*The Lion looks flabby and clawless (cynics might say that's actually quite apt).
In it's defence, there are a lot of circular badges out there. And a lot of badges that use a lion as the centrepoint. A return to the original design would look quite similar to Chelsea for one. Better to lead than to follow, and all that.
From a copyright point of view, there isn't really any other badge out there that looks like ours.
It's here to stay for the forseeable. RL and co were at pains to point out they wanted some uniformity, not having different stands with different crests and all the rest of it. That said, over time I hope there will be some refinement. Gold instead of yellow for example, and a sharper more defined lion in keeping with the original Scottish template.
Something closer to the type that adorned the old Trinity would be far more preferable, and wouldn't be a million miles away from the current design.
There should still be room for a circular badge though. Our biggest achievements occured with that design. For that reason, I wouldn't mind seeing it on a retro-style third (or fourth) kit. Perhaps for European matches.

We'll only need to worry about that for the one year though, as when we win our 3rd one the following year we can have a star between each letter.
A*V*F*C

I like it.
-
I still really like the crest that the club introduced in 1992 (at least until the Gregory years when the badge was tweaked and the lion got fatter).
-
The sky is falling!

Am I in an episode of LOST?

Am I in an episode of LOST?
What Troy said.

Am I the only one who thinks the current lion looks like Sting?

Am I the only one who thinks the current lion looks like Sting?
I know what you mean.
The Lion also seems to be demonstrating a Sting Reggae-lite jig.
A lot more hair on his mane though.

Or James Hetfield:

-
Rock on.
-
I think the current Lion looks like he's doing the Mash Potato.
I'm not madly in love with the new crest and would have rather gone back to the round badge and claret Lion, but it's alright.
-
i really dont like the new crest...
the typography is mismatched, the sheild is too simplistic, and the 'rampant lion' looks like a fairy holding a sparkler...
-
Speaking in my capacity as a graphic designer I can tell you that the current crest is an appalling piece of design.
It is simply "weak". The shield is too narrow, the yellow lion on light blue obviously lacks contrast, the star is an afterthought, the lion has literally lost its claws ( and as you say looks like it is dancing).
It has become cartoon like. The Lion also no longer confirms to heraldic norms as a Lion Rampant.
AND.... we are ASTON VILLA not AVFC.
It has no gravitas, class or weight.
Furthermore the old one with the stripes was almost as bad.
Help me here but we have had five crests since the sixties. Why?
-

More a randy lion..

Re-branding innit.
It all helps keep graphic designers all over the world employed.
I like the badge, much better than the last one.
-
The one in the first post is the best.
Innit.
-
I believe the star is in the Lion's eyeline to signify that the vision for the future is to repeat the feat it represents.
-
I believe the star is in the Lion's eyeline to signify that the vision for the future is to repeat the feat it represents.
I bet it isn't.
-
I don't like the current badge, and Paul's attempt at an alternative by moving the star is no better (sorry Paul).
The claret and blue shaped shield with the scroll underneath (not to be confused with "Prepared" crammed on to the shield version) or the circular one are preferable to the present one.
-
I think you're right, but where will we put the second star when we win the Champions League next?
We wont be alive to care about that.
I always like to start my week with a bit of optomism.
-
It's a dreadful piece of design. I don't really care that much about it now though, as I've got used to it, but it really is poor.
-

With you Dave. I believe the star is where it is because there was a gap there.
-
It's the one thing I think Randy has got wrong in 4 years, which is a shame as it's quite important.
As other people have said, it's colour palette is too week and it hasn't got our name on. Oh, and the star is in the wrong place.
Oh well...
-
I think there is a rule about not being able to have a star above the badge (where it should be). The Premier League only allows stars that signify domestic success (like Rangers have a star for every ten league titles they have won).
The crest is a lot better than the last one with bloody stripes on it. Would rather go back to the round one and have 'ASTON VILLA' written on it though.
Still, they will probably change it again in five years so not too bothered.
-
Don't like the AVFC but I can ignore it. Wasn't there some grouping, or press conference, or something from my hazy memory, connected to the club that had used AVFC, or branding us AVFC before the fixed 'vote' informed us that although only about 30% wanted an AVFC over a variation on Aston Villa FC, that's what we got.
But as for the badge, I had no feelings either way at the time and am still like that now. But, if anything, I slightly cringe when I see it on TV as its very child like and doesn't fill me witha Villa sense of pride.
But, there again, its still something I can get past.
-
Thats when you find a media outlet that uses the new badge - so many you see still dropping in the old one
-
The only thing with the old badge - as much as I like that one (the round one)- its all a bit Chelsea, Middlesbrough, etc etc
-
I didn't like it but I do now.
Still not as much as the old one, my mate constantly ribs me about having the old badge tattoo'd on my leg but the last one was my favorite so I don't care
-
The AVFC emphasis in the club's marketing was one thing they got wrong early on and soon put right. I think having a star on the badge is a bit Coventry but if it makes people happy, so be it.
-

This is how I feel about it also. The club crest, colours, kit etc. are all important and have meaning for me in terms of contributing to the cultural phenomenon that is Aston Villa. I want to be able to take pride in these things as a supporter in the same way that I want to be able to take pride in the team on the pitch.
The graphic design, and inclusion of the star, on the current crest is frankly embarrassing, and does put me off buying replica shirts/ merchandise - which in my opinion would all look a lot better with the 1980s circular crest, or the historic crest. I understand that the crest needed to be changed in order to have greater control over its re-production, but we ended up with something that is worse than the previous one, which most people felt was worse than its predecessor.
However, I have been able to forgive Randy for this error of judgment because of all the positive changes/ developments that have been made since his arrival. It was an attempt in my view to please everyone by giving supporters the opportunity to make suggestions on how it should look - a good end result rarely if ever comes from design by committee.

Pretentious? Moi?

I think the star is near the eye because the lion is, in fact, seeing stars, having taken a Heskey shot square in the fizzog whilst sitting (sorry, standing) at the back of the Upper Holte.
-
Fat Sam. I appreciate your comment about Randy/club/PR dept wanting to give the fans a forum to involve themselves in the design and the unfortunate resulting 'camel' but.....
why ignore us.
As one of those who did get involved, we were simply given a multiple choice questionnaire where the answers were clearely pre-ordained.
I put foreward a design ( arrogant, moi?) that was a compilation of a simplified 50's shield with Lion surrounded/ juxtaposed by the 80s circle with ASTON VILLA and Prepared on it.
My comments: Lion in Claret on sky blue. Never Yellow on light blue.
'Aston Villa' NOT AVFC
Anyway it is done now but let's face it - the club deserves better.
-
dont like it. never have, never will,
i can live with the colour, the lion, the star, although they are not great.
but it should at least say who we are, Aston Villa,
it doesnt, thats why its crap
i agree with others, only thing Randy got wrong, so cant be to harsh

haha very good.
I don't like the new crest.
The colours aren't right. In fact I would say they are 'girlish'.

Much MUCH better.

Care to share?
-
I wouldn't dare thanks :) Not after all the fuss over those ( great ) kit suggestions that were presented a couple of weeks ago.
No, better let sleeping dogs and all that. Too late now innit.
-
I'd like to see it. There was a thread about our 'new' badge/crest from a few years ago that from your date of joining you'd have missed. It would be interesting to see what you produced.
-
Post it Simba, otherwise we'll all think you're lion
Sorry
-
I'd love to see it too.
-

Agree.
That said I don't mind the badge. And I like the way it's very different from the old one, we needed a new image and we're slowly starting to get it.
What would be silly now is to change it, we need continuity in our brand. I think we're stuck with it.
-

Not their current one...

-
It's an age thing though, the circle badge was only around from the mid 1970s to 1992... 17 years max.
It's just to a large number of posters on here it is the badge they grew up and is associated with the EC etc...
-
Chelsea went back to a very old version of their badge and slightly modernized it.
-
I don't see why we couldn't just have a basic lion on the shirt, like Spurs have with their cockerel. No text, nothing else, not needed. A few other clubs have a rampant lion yes, but we're the Villa so they can all do one.
-
I wouldn't have minded something more along these lines (just a quick edit on my part):

It wouldn't really stand out on the shirt, would it?
-
You could always alternate colors as other teams do:
But if you had to squeeze everything into the actual crest:
I don't know, just a thought. I just don't like the white space inside the crest.

dont like the new badge,
but looking at the other attempt's on this thread, i think we might of got away lightly
-

I like it!

LOL!
-
Absolutely hate the current badge and it stops me from purchasing select Villa products. As others have mentioned - one of the very few things Randy has gotten wrong, so cant make too much a fuss about it. As the logo is tattooed on Randy's leg, doubt it will change anytime soon.
-
Like it Troy.
But the shape of the crest is a bit Arsenal.

Saved this originally from here waaay back when this was first raised can't remember who was responsible for it but i liked it enough to have as my mobile screensaver

I've never liked the shield - last version or this - and i don't like the lion which is just too yellow. The star is in a dumb place too.

Now that I do like.
Just need to do away with the abbreviation.
-
I would like to see the old circle design back but redesigned at bit, im not tallented enough to have a go but as retro seems to be the thing it would be nice to see it back, good memorys too, might bring us a bit of luck.

Is it just me that thinks "Prepared" is a bit of a shit motto?

Certainly a bit ironic!

Yeah, we're really shit etc....
