Does anyone know what Melbergs up to these days? hes not at AC any more and hes still got a few years left in him.
also I know we have had some legends in defence but who's youre fav?
I think Alan Evans is my fav, played up front too!!
-
Olympiakos. And he was at Juventus, not Milan.
-
Last I heard he had converted that beard into an Argentinian-style ranch.
-
I am from Greece and watched Olof. Mellberg had a very mediocre season with Olympiakos.
Olympiakos finished 5th, worst position that last 20 years.
-
He was voted Player of The Season at Olympiakos, so he can't have been that bad.
-
Still a legend in my eyes. and the shirt gesture at the end of the season was great. a great player and a great bloke.
-
oh yea juventus!! sorry.
-

Indeed. He was voted MVP for Olympiakos. But we are talking about a team that have won 12 titles the last 14 years. And they finished 5th. Maybe the team's overall bad performance didn't help him seem that good.
Maybe he comes back to Villa Park at Europa League
-
Lets hope so, i rember whem our defence got as many goals as our forwards!! but i wish him less luck on his return.
-
We could do with a back up center-back who plays right-back, just in case our other....never mind.
-
Where's BadEnglish when you need him?
-
Mellberg aint no Villa legend. If we keep using that word to describe half decent footballers who played for us it will soon lose it's impact. Real Villa legends are the likes of Mortimer and McGrath and co, and not Mellberg.

Quite right. A player the fans could relate to due to his effort and interaction with the crowd, but not a legend through his ability on the pitch. Real Villa legends are few and far between but the two you quoted are and always will be.

Agree, but its still nice to see some players appreciate the paying fans in a positive fashion!

I think he's up too something.
-
point taken, prob not a legend, but a good player who had an apriciation for the fans.

You don't need to back down to a load of Internet nerds telling you he is not a legend if he is to you then he is.
I'm sure he is to many Villa fans.
Lets not forget some posters did not have the pleasure of seeing every Villa player play since the 1800's !!!!
-
I'm an internet nerd and I class him as a legend.
-
Maybe i shuold grow a pair in future ha ha. im old enough to remember 82 etc just that not many players give back to the fans and maybe that should be as important as being a good player - which he was, a great servant.[/quote]

I'm an internet nerd and I class him as a legend.
Me too, on both accounts.

A legend during a difficult period for the club (2002 through to 2006).
-
mellberg is a nice bloke a good player but sorry no villa legend, mortimer, little shaw withe aitken and players before our time, not every player is a legend not everyone who puts on the shirt,i have worn loads of villa shirts but sadly i am only a villa legend in my dreams, sob pity
-
He was a great player but the word legend is thrown about a lot, he's done alot for the club and the fans. I hope to see him back one day in some way

So who from the previous decade would come close to legend status if Mellberg doesn't?
-
Ian Taylor - only one to stand out to be honest. Not enough about these days, but i believe someones going to com along sooner or later
-
GB should have been one but chased the money from the arabs

So Mellberg isn't a legend because he wasn't as good a player as some people think he was, yet Ian Taylor is a legend?

That pic gives me goosebumps! Great memories. I remember him being substituted before the end of the match at Boro when we won 4-0 in that awful last O'Leary season and him doing a similar fist-pumping salute to the fans. A legend in my eyes and a better right back than Cuellar (just)
-
Not gifted in the way McGrath was but he was a 100 % player who knew what being a Villa player was about and what it meant to us, the supporters. Legend. You just know he's a Villa man for life.

I werent saying Mellberg wasnt a good player but he was, but just dont see him as a legend, my opinion
-
If I had to rate him out of 10 I'd give him a 6 and a half. McGrath is a 10 obviously, maybe 11.
-
He's just been sent off! In fairness he's bound to get angry playing against Sweden's traditional rivals, err... San Marino.
-
Does he still play in Greece?
He's a legend in my mind. Along with Ian Taylor. A legend is not just about being a quality player BUT showing a deep passion and love for the club and a true connection with fans. Whereas he's 6.5 to McGrath's 10 in terms of quality he holds probably as big if not bigger love and connection with the club. Ian Taylor is nothing close to the player Sid was but he is in most people's eyes a club legend.

Love it, he's a legend in my eyes. A true Villa player.
-
Yep, Legend for me too. Not in the same class as Macca in playing terms but I believe the club and supporters mean far more to Olof than we ever did to Paul McGrath
-
I always rated Mellberg highly, as a defender was very good, perhaps his distribution let him down occasionally.
Could'nt understand why national media did'nt rate him so highly.
-
He scored tonight for Olympiakos.

Empty seats my lord! Is it a friendly??
