SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO?

At the end of the season its time to take stock of our current squad. Heroes & Villains proclaims it's view on who should be in our out of next year's squad.

Mark Bosnich: Stay.
If anybody has personified the Villa's season, it's this bloke. When he's good he's the best there is. And when he's bad he's awful. A disappointing season overall, Bossie knows that he's capable of much more and I hope he'll show us what that is next season.

Fernando Nelson: Stay.
Had an inconsistent start, but improved a lot in recent weeks. Even if Gary Charles does get back to his best form there should always be a place for this type of player if only as a squad member. And if Brian goes back to playing four at the back then he's a better defender than Charles.

Alan Wright: Stay.
Probably our most consistent performer. Hasn't quite scaled the heights of lost season, but hardly puts a foot wrong either.

Gareth Southgate: Stay.
Living proof that no Villa player should ever be picked for England. A series of niggling injuries, starting With one picked up in an international, have prevented the Nation's Hero from doing as well as he should have this season. And he's no midfielder anymore, either. But there's no-one better who could replace him.

Ugo Ehiogu: Stay.
Another one who hasn't made the improvement he should have. But he's young, still learning and again I can't see anybody better.

Steve Staunton: Go.
Controversial, eh? If he could ever play a full season I'd be singing his praises, but despite looking wonderful at times he still remains an enigma. Is Staunton a wing-back, a midfielder or a sweeper? Is he the most versatile player in the country, or just not good enough to make one single position his own? A good few million and I'd get rid of him. That's one of the reasons why I'm not manager.

Andy Townsend: Go.
Even though he has signed a new contract. The first true Villa captain since Dennis Mortimer deserves better than to slide into ineffectiveness. He's been wonderful under Brian but I'd rather see him move on and remember the player he was rather than see him become a scapegoat.

Ian Taylor. Stay.
There'd be an outcry if there was even the slightest hint of the local hero departing. And quite right, too. This season he's moved from a squad player to being first choice. Next season, who knows? A few more goals would be nice, though.

Mark Draper: Go.
I hope I'm proved wrong, but I've got a nasty feeling that Draper is the sort of player who has a good season at even new club then feels he doesn't have to bother once he's established Certainly nowhere near as effective as last season and about as adventurous as Ray Wilkins. If we get a good price then I'd cash in.

Savo Milosevic: Stay.
If he's happy to be a squad player when we buy this mythical new striker then I'd be happy to keep him. At least I'd like to give hi chance to see if a different position could be for him.

Dwight Yorke: Stay.
Or else there's be trouble. You can't replace the best.

Michael Oakes: Stay.
As we said last season, for as long as he's happy to be here. But when that time will come, who knows?

Gary Charles: Stay.
Hopefully he'll get over his injury and get back to the form of last season. Admit it how many times have you said that we've mi him?

Riccardo Scimeca: Stay.
See Michael Oakes.

Sciso Curcic: Go.
A square peg, a round hole. A big signing-on fee, another few quid at his next club. He won't be missed.

Lee Hendrie: Stay.
But a word of caution. He's getting a bit old to be a promising youngster forever next season will be make or break.

Gareth Farelly: Go, if he wants to.
If you don't appreciate how lucky you are mate, it's not our fault. One international appearance doesn't make you a star and although you've looked good in one match your hardly setting the world alight in the reserve team. If on the other hand you want to stay, then that would be fine.

Julian Joachim: Go.
Brian obviously thought he could get back the pre-injury Joachim, but it hasn't worked out. A pity, but that's football, At least, like Tommy Johnson, we should get back the money we paid with interest.

David Hughes: Stay.
Another player who has come through and shows enormous potenrial. It's too early to say how good he could become, but I think that in a year or two we're going to have problems keeping all our central defenders happy.

By my reckoning that's two midfieiders and a striker we'll be needing in the summer. How about Kinkladze, Zola and Batistuta from Fiorentina? With Matthias Sammer, George Weah or Ronaldo as second choice. I'm not fussy.
