Vitesse Arnhem - Operation Market Garden - Claret & Blue shirts
« on: September 18, 2019, 03:11:23 PM »
Yesterday was the anniversary of the start of Operation Market Garden, the failed attempt to end WW2 by the largest airborne operation in history.
Centered around the capture & denial of bridges to the German occupiers over the Rhine near the Dutch town of Arnhem, the daring operation failed due to logistics & poor intelligence.

To commemorate the invasion, Vitesse Arnhem wear a commemorative shirt in the famous colours of Allied airborne forces, claret (maroon) & light blue & play an annual 'airborne game' where the famous shirt is worn. Vitesse normal colours are yellow & black. This year it's a thing of beauty and you can buy one here as well as a load of other claret & blue memorabilia.

The annual 'airborne' match will be played vs Fortuna Sittard on 21st September.

Previous years shirts.

Strange that they commemorate something that failed?

Small Heath fans still commemorate a group stage exit in a Europa League campaign.

I suspect it is about the many men who fought gallantly and gave their lives in their town, the fact it failed doesn't come into it.

There's many a divorcée that commemorates a failed marriage.    😉
