I remember being in the pub for the England v Croatia game and when the team was announced I couldn't believe he had thrown a young keeper in for his debut in such a crucial qualifying game we needed to get something out of. We weren't exactly spoilt for choice at the time but I think David James was on the bench and he had been our keeper in the previous tournament and would have been far less of a gamble. Carson had looked decent for us until that game but he never really recovered from it. Same as Enckelman after the two Small Heath games and the Southampton game in 2002-2003. All live Monday night games.

What happened in the Southampton game? I was at every home and most aways around that period but I have no memory of that game.

Quote
Southampton snatched their first away of the season as Gordon Strachan's side narrowly beat 10-man Aston Villa.

The struggling Midlands side had to play most of the second half without goalkeeper Peter Enckelman.

Just 11 seconds after the restart Enckelman was sent-off after giving away a penalty that was converted by James Beattie.

The win saw Southampton move up one place into twelfth spot as Gordon Strachan's side won on their travels for the first time since March.

After a muted first half the game exploded into life as Enckelman again took centre stage in a Monday night game of football.

Just over a month ago the Villa goalkeeper was adjuged to have touched Olof Melberg's throw-in on its way to goal as Graham Taylor's side lost 3-0 to Birmingham.

This time the Finn was involved in a mix-up with Alpay, which saw Brett Ormerord sandwiched between the two Villa players.

Referee Steve Bennett immediately red-carded the goalkeeper.

Television replays suggested that it was Alpay - the transfer-listed defender who was returning to the Villa team after a five-week interlude - who should have been dismissed.

On came Stefan Postma to make his Premiership debut, but the Dutch goalkeeper's first task was to pick the ball out of the net after Beattie crashed his shot low into the corner.

The pity for Enckleman was that he had had a solid game up to that point.

Wolves 1-2 up. Traore with a sublime assist for their second.

I'm annoyed i find myself wanting Wolves to do badly.

I've never really minded them, quite liked them in fact, but so many of their fans have become absolute bell ends since they finished above us for the first time in thousands and thousands of years, I want them to lose.

I completely agree re Carson and your comment re James, Damo.

For Enckelman, I almost agree but I think he played his best ever game for us away at West Ham in April 2003 in a 2-2. He had an absolute stormer in the 2nd half that saved us from certain defeat. Bit that was a blip in his general demise following the two games against Them.

Fair play to the dogheads, 3-1 up away to Torino is decent going. I think the group stage will fuck them up though as their squad just doesn't look big enough to cope.

As for Carson, I think Robinson had been the keeper for most of the qualifiers and had done a few fuck ups.

3-1 up against  Papa's Got a Brand New Qarabag is a cracking scoreline for Linfield.

One thing i have noticed about the dogheads is they have suffered hardly any injuries which has to be a big help A few injuries to some of their better players and they would struggle

It was still a big call and it backfired. It reminded me of Ferguson dropping Jim Leighton for Les Sealey for the FA Cup final, except on that occasion the gamble payed off. I think one of Robinson's cock ups had been a mix up between him and Gary Neville that resulted in a bad goal conceded but I can't remember who it was against (possibly Croatia away?) or who was most at fault out of the two of them.

I seem to remember an air kick as the ball took a bobble but can't remember if that was the Croatian game.

I think most Premier League teams would struggle without some of their better players. Manchester City and Liverpool possibly being exceptions due to the strength of their squads.

Robinson was finished from the moment that backpass bobbled as he was about to kick it away. Not really his fault but not the sort of goal you concede you can easily live down.

Edit: Yeah it was Croatia away game, surprised it was actually over a year before the infamous Wembley game so Robinson played many of the games after that.
