All I can say is what is wrong with Montpellier or Girona? Tsk!

Montpellier would have been fantastic. Spent a few months in Nimes during my younger years trying to learn French, and really liked Montpellier. Loads of students, nice architecture, good nightlife, lovely women.

Sadly, I never actually got to see Montpellier play (or learnt much French for that matter) whilst I was there. My roommate was a massive Istres fan, and would drag me along to watch their woeful brand of football. The only player of note I can remember is Bakayoko.

Chemcie Leipzig is the 3rd team in Leipzig (by support), behind RB Leipzig and Lokomotiv Leipzig.

So still no season tickets on sale, and now a friendly against a European team in a city with no direct flights.  Brilliant.
to be fair the club probably aren’t expecting that people would
Travel in numbers to Germany for a pre-season friendly.

Thanks to Frank for his comments above on the background to RB.

Astonishingly, RB Leipzig have made themselves even more unpopular in the last couple of weeks by announcing a cooperative working relationship with Paderborn (just promoted to the Bundesliga) which to all intents and purposes envisages Paderborn acting as Red Bull's farm team. Paderborn supporters are already refusing to renew season tickets in disgust at this, while the DFB (German Football Association) studiously look the other way, apparently deaf so far to legitimate accusations that this could lead to huge conflicts of interest. They obviously took the lead from UEFA, who cheerfully allowed both the main Red Bull franchises - Leipzig and Salzburg - to share a group in last season's Europa League.

I know when my German team MSV Duisburg played there a few years ago all but one of our supporters groups chose not to travel.

Red Bull are Germany's most hated club by some distance and, although you can't necessarily expect Villa to be fully au fait with the ins and outs of German football, I am a little disappointed that we're indulging them by agreeing to a friendly there.

Was having a look at how to get to Leipzig, and there doesnt seem to be any economical way of doing it (preferably out Friday, back Sunday). Anybody else thinking of going and found a relatively affordable way of getting there?

I was looking at going to Berlin and train down but even then the flights aren't the best - happy to go from BHX or EMA.

It's probably going to be quite expensive, whichever way you travel. On page 4 of this thread I've suggested how you might fly from Birmingham to Leipzig with one change.
East Midlands doesn't look very convenient as there are no flights back on a Sunday

Leipzig is the nearest city to Colditz Castle. I can feel a "two birds with one stone" trip coming on.

Aaaahhh.

I was interested in going to this friendly (on account of finding myself with shed loads of free time this summer). The stories of expensive flights made me think again, but then I was thinking it'd be a nice trip to drive and being able to see Colditz too would be brilliant.

Although I've just remembered it is in (the old) East Germany, and therefore a very, very fucking long drive.

As a teenage Early Music student (don't ask) I went to Leipzig to participate in the International Bach Festival (don't ask). I got the ferry as a foot passenger from Harwich to Hook of Holland then a direct train to Leipzig itself, quite a pleasant journey as I recall, only six hrs or so. May be worth considering to those contemplating the journey.

I’ve been a few times. Manchester do direct flights or at least they did. A few times I’ve done BHX to Munich - Munich - Leipzig. Or, Stanstead to Dresden train to Leipzig about an hour..

I went over to Leipzig during the World Cup, flew to Prague, had a night there, then hired a minibus and drove to Leipzig via Colditz. I think it was about a 5 hour trip each way.

I'm on my way to Colditz with a tour at this very moment. It's about 30 miles from Leipzig

For those with time and money, the train to Leipzig might be an option.
