Notts County 0 Villa 6 FA Cup 1982
« on: March 24, 2019, 10:27:41 AM »
A big win away to Notts County who were in the top flight then, along with a David Geddis hatrick, and we played them again at their place in the league a week or so later and somehow lost!
I had these highlights recorded (without all the breaks in) just after we had a video recorder, along with the Tiswas flop OTT on the same tape, its funny what you remember!

Went that night. Clutch on my car played up so had to go back and a mate took his car. Didn't have a lot of petrol in it and then realised he hadn't got the key for the petrol cap. Only got to see 3 of the 6 goals.

I didn't go but I went the following week expecting a lot if goals and it was a boring 0-0.

During their 3 year top flight spell this was the only game at Meadow Lane we didn't lose. Overall we played them 9 times in league and cups and lost 6 and won only 3.

I'm sure we lost the following week as I couldn't believe it after the 6-0.. John Chiedozie?

Just checked and yes you're right. I've no recollection of their goal.

I went on the special with a mate, as it was before i headed back to university after xmas. It was always fun arriving at New St and seeing hundreds of Villa fans and wondering if the train would sell out before you got to the kiosk.

I'd never seen us win that easily away from home before. I remember coming back to Brum and walking down the ramp at New St and a bloke asked us the score. He thought we were taking the piss when we told him 6-0 with a Geddis hat trick.

A week or two later I made the trip from Sheffield to Nottingham to watch us get our habitual defeat there.  We were crap against them in the few seasons they were in the top flight.

I went and had my first fecking Bovril as was so cold. I have been having a drink tonight but wasn't it straight after this game that Sir Ron resigned?  It was a Wednesday game and we lost to them 10 days later if my maths is correct

A month later, 9th Feb, a few days after we'd lost 4-1 at Manure.

I heard the news about Ron Saunders resigning whilst visiting my aunt in Lichfield. There was a Midweek Sports Special on with highlights of Ipswich v Liverpool playing in the League Cup semi final and I remember them interviewing Bobby Robson about the news after the game.

Remember it well.......think the game got postponed from the saturday to midweek and i got a coach from VP straight from school - i'd made cheesy wotsit sandwiches that morning for the journey up there and they were totally soft and chewy by the time I ate them !

I remember steam rising from behind the back of the side stand from the nearby abattoir in to the cold night air.....tony morley's new blond haircut......all the goals........and us singing "Jimmy, Jimmy !" when we got the penalty, hoping our keeper would be allowed to take the spot kick as a final piss take !
