All-time Attendances
« on: February 10, 2019, 08:08:18 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a list online of all the home attendances to all of our games?

I overheard some Baggie in a pub in town proudly claiming we only got 8,000 for their game in 1982/83 - tried to check it out but was unable to find it listed anywhere.

Talking bollocks as usual. We did get a gate of 8000 or so against Southampton once, but not against them, and that was at the height of the hooligan problem when everyone's attendances were awful.

There have been two games since 1946 when the attendance was 1.   It was me turning up on the wrong day.

I vaguely remember being at a game in the 70/71 season when there were only 10k or so in the ground and the  pigeons in the rafters seemed to be making more noise than the crowd.

Still bigger than most of their gates for the last 30 years.

If the starting point for a "debate" is our lowest  league attendance during a time when all clubs' crowds were at a post-Hysel nadir, it is worth noting that in the same season and in the same division that only 8456 turned up at Villa Park on a freezing cold February night, Albion had four attendances of less than 8000 and a low of 6201 against Sheffield Wednesday.

So, in other words, in an era when all attendances were shit, our shittiest was still a third more than their shittiest.

If I remember right that was a midweek game and Alan Curbishley made his full debut. I am pretty sure the Southampton game in 1986 when we had about 8,500 there was the only time our league attendance dipped below 10,000. In that same season Albion and Small Heath were playing in front of less than 10,000 regularly in the same division. I think they both had several attendances under eight thousand. In 1985-1986 we finished 16th in the league table with an average attendance of 15,218. Coventry finished 17th in the table with an average crowd of 11,648, Small Heath were 21st place in the table with an average of 10,118 and Albion finished bottom of the league that year watched by an average attendance of 12,137. In 1987-1988 when we were all in the second division Small Heath averaged 8,576 and Albion averaged 10,126 but i haven't been able to find our average that season.

Without checking I think it was about 18,000. Highest was Bradford with 36,000. We also played liverpool in the cup and got 46,000.

A quick search gives our average attendance in 1987-88 as 18,172 - making us that season's 11th best supported club in England, despite being in the Second Division.

The Bradford match does skew the figure somewhat, as I remember plenty of games earlier in the season when the crowd was in the low five-figures.

I was one of the 8,456 against Southampton on 01/02/86 which was actually a Saturday afternoon game, mostly notable for Dave Ismay getting the bird from a sparsely populated Holte for his ‘get behind your team’ speech. Heaven knows what Tony Barton made of it who returned as part of Saints coaching team.
10-12,000 was commonplace that season, including a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal watched by 10k for another Saturday 3pm game.

Another few big sides had a few shockers:
Spurs vs Blues, old div 1, 16/04/86 - 9,359

Chelsea vs Walsall in old div 2, 04/10/88 - 6,747

My next door neighbour who took me down the Villa to watch from the Holte from when I was a kid took a year off for personal reasons that 1985-1986 season so I had a season with my mate and his Dad in the upper Trinity. As it was getting closer and closer to kick off on the day of the Southampton game I couldn't believe how sparsely populated the Holte was.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, and again, and again. When you look at what football supporters had to put up with back then, the wonder isn't that crowds were so low, it was that so many of us still turned up.

The average in 87/88 was 18,342. The EFS site is often wrong by a few hundred. 86/87 was 18,171.
