With Bree, I just don't think we can know whether he will be good enough unless he gets a run of games at RB.

He's been at Villa for years and I don't think he has played three consecutive games. We have to see what he can do either in our first XI or on loan. And presently with the form of Elmo and Hutton and De Laet in Oz, I would suggest we do that by playing him.

The fact that several managers have had him available for selection, and have consistently not picked him over players that are not very good tells it's own story. They can't all be wrong! I would put him in the same category as Jordan Bowery, strange punt of signing that hasn't worked out.

Which 'several managers'? There's only Bruce, who bought him and never used him. Unless you're counting McDonald as a caretaker manager. If it was a long string of managers I'd agree that 'they can't all be wrong' but if 'all' does mean just Bruce and McDonald I'd say they could be and very possibly were.

Bree turned 21 last month. I think he's looked quite composed for his age. I certainly wouldn't be writing him off just yet.

And you can't really count Smith into this because he's used Hutton, Elmo and Bree so he's clearly been giving all of them a chance to earn their place, which is the right thing to do if you come in at the time he did, alienating senior players because they've been poor in the run up to him getting the job just isn't good management. I think he now has a good idea of the strengths and weaknesses of most of the senior players and we might well start seeing more appearances by the younger players over the next few months, Bree has clearly benefited from this but I suspect Davis and O'Hare will stay around the squad now and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few others getting onto the bench, etc. The issue he'll have is that he's going to want to bring them in to games where we're in a strong position but with our defence we've not had that so far.

Given the number of games Bree has had since joining I think writing him off prematurely could be a mistake.

I thought he has done as well as expected given the circumstances, especially if you count Bruce's "training methods"

Player who hasn't played regularly since May 2017 looking horribly off the pace.

Can't say I'm massively shocked. This is a problem when you sign players who hardly play in months.

Indeed. Not exactly in the best place to make an immediate positive impact.

But it was a needless substitution in any case. Who on here was watching that shambles and thinking a change of centre half was what was needed to turn it around?
