on the outside looking in over 40,000 is a great crowd

is that a record in the championship ?

Nope, but we hold the record for the second tier (outside play-off finals). 62,000 I think.

Sunderland, April 1975 was 57,266. Don't know of any higher than that but happy to be corrected.

A quick check and 68,029 v Coventry in 1937. Which I believe is the record for a normal league game in the second tier.

Those 2 years we were in division 2 36/37 and 37/38 we also had 63,686 v Cov and 65,500 v Newcastle in 36/37 60,166 v Spurs in 37/38. Plus a number of 50K+.

And in the FA Cup we had 75,540 for Man City in the FA Cup 6th round, 63,530 v Charlton 5th round replay and 69,208 for Blackpool in the 4th round. All 1937/38.

Somebody on the match thread said Deano doesn’t have a magic wand to make the team click straight. But we saw progress today no doubt..

Agree with that Tony.  He's got to find which players fit the system and style he wants to play and that is going to take a bit of time.

sorry lads not being too pedantic here but i meant the championship

in the olden days football crowds were alot different . most crowds were standing

think our record attendance was 58,000 back in the 50's for example

just looked on google your record attendance was 76,000 in the 40's but i guess that was division 1 back then !

where did they all fit in at villa park -lol

Albert 5 - lacked any dynamism in his performance for me when you see what we have waiting in the wings to replace him
I can not agree with that. I thought today Albert had his best game of the season so far. He worked very hard and was lively all the way through.

Totally agree Aftab, his best performance this season

Big 3 points and rare for us to get a new manager bounce in the first game.

Some positive signs and enjoyed seeing us press high up the pitch. I think he will work on our fitness as we visibly tire towards the end of every game.

Shit atmosphere apart from the start and for the goal, but it nearly always is down the Villa these days. Great attendance though, two good results away from home next week should hopefully see 35k+ against Bolton which would be a great crowd for a Friday night game.

Can't wait to see how he sets us up away from home. Exciting times.

You certainly seem to revel in slagging off our support. You must be loving this - 42,000 people to criticise today. Was the singing poor again? Did you sing? Have you joined a choir yet?

Couldn’t agree with Deano’s post match analysis more. Solid first half, tired second...a great 3 pts either way.

Some ratings on the starting 11...

Nyland - 7.5 gave away a sloppy corner otherwise this could have been an 8. I think he’ll always make me nervous on the ball but shot stopping is up there with Bozzie

Hutton 6 - industrious but I’d love to see us bring in some more quality on the ball in this area

Tuanzebe 7 - didn’t notice him too much but probably the mark of a competent performance.

Chester 9 - rock solid today. Always in the right place and totally assured with the ball at his feet. Think this performance will have impressed Smith.

Taylor 7 - worked hard, few mistakes. No complaints

BB 8 - tidied up a lot of lose balls very effectively. Benefited from their forward line having a terrible first touch. Apart from one misplaced pass where he tried to be clever he kept things simple and gave a composed performance.

McGinn 8 - end product wasn’t always on point but tenacious presence in the midfield. Started a lot of our good work going forward and was determined to never lose the ball.

Grealish 7 - still fail to see how he would have any impact at Spurs with his performances for us this season. Still an effective no.10 performance for a Championship side.

Elmo 7 - good first half and did well for the goal. Fairy anonymous second.

Albert 5 - lacked any dynamism in his performance for me when you see what we have waiting in the wings to replace him

Tammy 7 - took his goal well, but very sloppy with his ball distribution. Looks a handful for defenders

thanks Alan- I didn’t see the match, but that seems a good summary from a supporter’s view. Sounds like it was pretty close but we edged it, when usually it would be a draw. Have we turned a corner?

villa’s funny - most week’s we’re guaranteed 36k, then something happens, or a significant match, or whatever, and if VP held 70,000 it would sell out. Maybe that’s where our ‘fickle’ tag comes from?

I wasn't at the game itself, but on avtv it sounded a decent atmosphere, and friends and family (including my mum, who hasn't been since about 2004!) who went, confirmed this.

When you say the atmosphere was shit, Quinton, what do you actually mean? And on the other side of things, what, for you, would a great atmosphere be like?

Me personally, I'd like to see everyone in the crowd wearing a horse mask, the Jurassic Park theme tune replacing 'Don't Look Back in Anger', and the referee riding an ostrich around the pitch. But I don't think I'm ever going to get my wish.

Yes may be but we had segregation in PL as well?

I was in A4 in the Trinity and I could see pockets of empty seats in the lower North Stand and in the far side of the lower Holte, the left side as was.

Still a marvellous crowd.
the left side as was! THE LEFT SIDE!!!!
