Ken Russell - 75 not out
« on: October 02, 2018, 06:54:42 PM »
John Russell's brother Ken celebrates the 75th anniversary of his first-ever game tonight. John told me a few years ago that between them they'd missed one league game since the war and them or a direct family member had been to around 90% of all the games ever played at Villa Park - first team, reserves, FA Cup semis, the lot. We'll never see that sort of record again.

Wow! Here's hoping for a great Villa for for Ken.. and all of us. It's the least we deserve.

My God.

Are you in The Globe for tonight’s game Chicago?. My son and his wife are in there, whilst on holiday.

When I was a callow youth my grandad told me boring stories of being involved in early trade union movements and the war and blah, blah. Ten years after he died, I realised I'd lost my chance to ask him more about amazing stuff, about different times, things that are now beyond my comprehension. Grab this man, quiz him, write it down.

Was it John or Ken who was a regular contributor to the Fanzine? Always good articles of us in the 60s and 70s.

Yep. My Dad has some great stories of his grandfather, who worked the turnstiles at Villa, Blues, and Albion up until his death in 1957 (he lived to see Villa win the Cup - again, the lucky sod).

Some of it is Villa stuff, but other stories surround his shire horses kept at a stable in Stechford, his coal distribution business in the same area, and touting tickets to FA Cup semi finals at Villa Park - he made sure he knew the players for tickets.

This stuff has to be recorded.
