McGinn is important to the way we play. I like him a lot and think if we added Phillips, sides would be run off the park with them pair.

But £50m is just crazy money and if they're actually willing to pay it, then you could buy a £30m replacement and have money left over to over pay to get Phillips, without disrupting the budget.

But the fee quoted in the article is the price tag we want  not what they're willing to pay. I can't imagine they'd want to pay anything like that. They're a huge club and a huge lure...but no Champions League football, so not quite the opportunity of a lifetime.

I think the point is Risso, neither us or Man Utd know how good he is really as he's never played a game in the PL to be fully tested. In which case, £50m sounds like a ridiculous gamble, which i reckon is a bolllox story but i suppose you never fail to be suprised with modern football. It also depends from our point of view how much of a problem it is from FFP and our own resources to be paying £11m for Target, £22m for Wesley, £14m or whatever for Mings, £22m for Butland and £25m or so for Phillips. If we don't really need the money (as i suspect we don't) that's one consideration, but as i stated earlier, whichever way you look at it £50m whould make good business sense for us regardless.

Perfect blueprint for having plenty of money in the bank and getting relegated.

I’m probably in a minority here, but I’d take £50m for him. Being honest, he isn’t THAT good and if it meant we then used the money to bring Philips, another midfielder and say Tuanzebe in, it would be great business.

It's difficult and that is a good argument.  However, we should know by experience that selling our best players weakens the team significantly as we replace them for poorer versions (N'Zogbia for Young, Ayew/Gestede for Bentetke.

SJM improved as the season played out.  Who knows how much more he can improve, playing with and against better players?

For me, in the hypothetical scenario that £50 mil was on the table, I would turn it down.  We already have the money for Phillips and another midfielder and I'm not convinced that Tuanzebe would hit the ground running in the PL.

Why would John McGinn go to a midtable club on a downward spiral with a shit manager and owners ?

From an objective point of view there’s no way McGinn is worth £50m.

But we already have far too much to do in this window.  We need some continuity from last season and he is a key player for us.  Retaining PL status is just too important so I’d say right now we just can’t afford to let him go at any price.  Hopefully the owners will nip this in the bud with an unequivocal ‘hands off’

Man Utd have set their own bar on signings now. If they’ll spend £50 mill on a young full back it’s atleast £75 mill for a midfielder like SJM. We don’t need or want to sell so it needs to be an unbelievable deal for us to consider it.

Even if there is any truth in it, he won't go anywhere, not yet anyway.

What would it cost to replace McGinn & get the level of performance he's going to deliver for us in the Premiership? McGinn will only get better, tell them to get lost.

A Champions League club would have me more worried.

Still, they are Man United and they do pay ridiculous wages. But they're also an utter shambles, without an identity, full of over paid sulks like Pogba and Sanchez, who will be sacking another manager come December.

Did Hibs have the foresight to insert an sell-on clause?

I'd worry about going into a season in the Premier League without last season's best defender, best striker and second-best (by a whisker) midfielder.

Yes.

What percentage? And is it up to a maximum amount?
